Overrated products

Eh, the original post took it all too seriously. You, me, and most other pro detailer on here with a rotary know that 106ff is the only way to go on super soft black. I'd love if OP did it, but it doesn't. On most other paint OP is fine (though I still prefer 106ff); but on those e92s, astons, and glasurit resprays 106ff is the only way to go.

But ya, deciding a product is overrated just because a lot of guys like it... well... :wow:

On topic; products I think are over-rated!

Any poorboys polish/compound.

optimum tire shine

wolfgang dgps

p21s wheel cleaner (there, I said it...)

z2pro (not to be confused with z5pro, which rocks hard)

the stinking schmitt.

Agreed on 106, Love it! Try the new Tire Shine, should be reformulated. Wow don't like P21S, it's so safe if you let it dwell, kinda pricey. Schmitt varies with each user...What would you use instead?

I have to say i agree with Picus, while the schmitt is soft, it does tend to push dirt around and cause more marring than with a microiber or sheepskin mitt.

And as a user of P21S wheel gel, i can say it is indeed overrated. The only reason i own it is because if I get a car with super expensive wheels, I will use that just to be ultra safe (even though I can get most wheels clean with citrus wash and gloss). But even when you let it dwell for 30+ minutes, it does not clean as well as you would expect.

However, Optimum is coming out with a new wheel cleaner, and if it is anything like the rest of their line (although I have not used their tire shine) it will be the best wheel cleaner I have used to date.

Wow there are some popular products here not being liked at all

I think the difference between my overrated products and everyone elses is how rigorously I test each product and on every surface

These few products I really hate with a passion

Forever black tire gel and trim dye

FK 1 2180

Clearkote yellow moose

Sonus trim kote (that stuff you use in your engine bay)

Mothers back to black, cali gold car wash

Pinnacle car wash

Wolfgang IDS (V1)

blue magic metal polish

CG's extreme slick QD. (smells like fly spray and does jack s)

Autoglym 01B polish, Yellow vinyl and rubber protectant, super resin polish

Meg's 00 wash, gold class wash, soft wash gel, #9 SMR (fillers), NXT, #34, pro clay bars, #40 natural protectant (smears), trim detailer (washes off whereas trim dream never will.

Products that I'm unsure about

Glare pro polish (works good by machine and hand but alcohol will remove it, showing all the marks again)

Does that mean the fillers in it will wash out?

DP Final finishing polish (lacks good gloss sometimes)

that's about it. everything else works great.

Oh and 106FF is absolutely the best machine finishing polish for me.

Sometimes optimum polish and hyper work and other times they don't do crap

ONR however is a brilliant QD and clay lube.

Poorboys Pro polish is sensational and SSR the best on clear and painted plastic.

Not arguing your results at all but I buy it by the case. It's going to be the replacement for Wheel Brightener for me along with a couple of other products.

I love the way it cleans tires.. It works great for that. And also for wheels that are reasonably well maintained.. But I've never had any luck with it on nasty wheels or wells.. I'm also going through it really really fast. Even diluting where possible. Seems like I just opened my gallon, and its already almost gone (at $25 thats no good). Maybe my fault.. But thats why there's so many products I guess.. People can like such different things. And what works for one wont for another..

I'm gonna have to agree with the FK425 being overrated. It just doesn't do it for me. There are lots of other QD's I prefer.

I like it. Name some you prefer.

Holy crap, now we're in for it! Black Sunshine has every QD ever made. He had an addition put on his garage just to house his QD collection!

Just kidding man, but I remember your "I love QD's thread"!

While I liked the original post better, this one is still on the money. How can you say sex is overrated if you haven't had any?
Sex is like air, its not important unless you are not getting any.

Holy crap I forgot about that. There is a product that suckered a lot of people.

First, I want to say I LOVE my ShMitts and my Menzerna PO106FF.

Now that that's out of the way these products are over rated IMHO . . .

Poorboy's SSR line

Pinnacle XMT Glaze

Optimum Poli-Seal (WAY over rated)

Pinnale Souveran

P21S Concours Wax (I can't fathom what makes it so popular aside from it's ease of use)

Optimum Compound

Optimum Car Wax

There's probably a few others I can't think of right now.

E90/92s are crazy soft. I think it is because they ARE NOT baked.

The metallics are baked for sure, and they all have primer, however I believe (*might be wrong*) that the flat colors use a different paint than the metallics, which is why they are so much softer (as is my experience).

FWIW, I've worked on a silly amount of e92s; they seem to vary quite a bit. Mine is sparkling graphite and it is *rock hard*, like, wash it however I want hard. Like, hey there is a bird poop, I will wipe it off with this dry rag and not marr the finish hard. I lucked out I guess. Space Grey and Titanium Silver also seem pretty solid (both metallic). Black Sapphire, Montego, and Monaco also seem on the hard side of average (all metallic), whereas red, alpine white, and in particular jet black (the three flats) have all been painfully soft in my experience.

The SCMitt seems to be a personal thing. I don't like the way I have to push it into tight areas; like in between mirrors, spoilers, etc. A sheepskin or even grout sponge goes right in with no effort. I don't mind the way it actually cleans; I just find it requires a bit more work and pressure.

I have tried the new Opt Tire Shine, I seem to be the only one that doesn't like it, so I am sure it is me. As for P21S; I find the menzerna ph neutral wheel cleaner to be much more effective as equally as safe.

Try that Menzerna ph balanced cleaner, I use it on my wheels and any other wheels I do with uncoated aluminum; it cleans better than P21S (imo) and is easily as safe.

As Setec pointed out, I am a QD junky. My favorite QD is Griot's Speed Shine. It just does everything well for me. It cleans well, it NEVER streaks, it wipes clean quickly and easily, it's slick, has a pleasant fragrance, it's a little thicker which I feel safer using, and leaves behind a minute amount of carnauba protection. The only time I don't use it is directly between layers of sealant as it does have a small amount of liquid carnauba in it.

Other notable mentions:

Adam's Detail Spray

Z6 works wonderfully over Zaino, but other than that, I don't use it much.

Sonus Acrylic/Carnauba spritzes

Duragloss QD (I forget the name, but it works great over sealants)

Meg's UDQ has worked well for me

1Z lackfinish (adds some nice polymer pop/protection after washing)

Prima Slick (yep, it's slick)

Meg's 34 (workhorse)

One Grand Show Off is stunning on dark colors over a carnauba

Meg's NXT is okay for OTC now that they've updated the sprayer

Shall I go on? :grinno:

Oddly enough, I have been having some troubles with my Clearkote Quik Shine as of late. It doesn't seem to want to buff clear for me no matter what over my Z2Pro. It works fine over the carnauba on the Z06, though.

I resemble those comments :p

NXT sealant- worse durability than a good carnauba in my experience. Not even close to the hype.

Mother's Back to Black- junk

Meg's Gold Class Trim Detailer- horrible

Wheel Wax- good cleaner, terrible product. Separated right after purchase, went in the trash

Microfiber Wash Mitt- yea I fell for the marketing. Never again.

Big Blue Drying Towel- nice towel but not worth nearly $20 a piece. Found much better for less.

collonite 476. less then 2 months & it is toast even tho the initial gloss is dazzling!!!!
You should try again. I've gotten almost 4 months from 476s with only weekly washing, no qd'ing or refreshing.

I think that people think that the experienced durability is the Holy Dunnowhat, no matter if their paint is old, new, permeable, impermeable, etc.

LSPs on neglected permeable finishes won't be as durable as on newer or pampered ones. Filtering out the "noise" aka determining important factors is always recommended when we voice an opinion.

Optimum Hyper compound- the only way I can get cut from it is with a wool pad-with foam it seems pretty useless.

Duragloss 111- definitely better products out there for darks

Megs NXT- great initial look but beading dies after a couple washes
