List your products that did not meet the hype

Unfortunately Menzerna's full potential seems to come through rotary use only. It does well via Cyclo for micro marring extermination

I used Menzerna FP side by side with SFP after using DACP on the entire hood of a benley that I detail and I thought that the SFP looked better and smoother. This is likely because of extra oils and fillers but the end result looked better. They both had good results but being that DACP and SFP are so cheap and slightly better in my opinion then they are the winner.

One product that I've found to be very nice but not talked about much is Megs #81 hand polish.

Everthing I tried in 2004 I liked. I tried AIO, SG, Wolfgang Sealant, S100,NXT , Turtle Ultra wax and detail spray, Nano, Woolite and water , and Collinite 845. I liked some things better than others ,but over all these products are great.

Not unfortunately, but the truth. I'm glad it works wonders with the rotary.

If the someone doesn't use it correctly or doesn't use the right tools with it how can you properly label it? And that probably goes for half of the products on this list. I see it too often on this board were some drops the "bottom line" on a product.

The S100 is one of the products that didn't live up to my expectations. On my cars, it gives a "silvery" reflectiveness that hid the real colors of the car. IMO, it's nowhere near the "cheap Souveran" that people say it is.

I've purchased 2 jars and given both away.

Funny how many people are disappointed with Meguiar's products yet they're the number one detail product company in the U.S. I only like three of their products: High Endurance, #16, and #39. Marketing is everything!

Nice cheap shot there. Because they sell a lot it must be marketing? Couldn't you just say you don't like their stuff and be done with it instead of making such a specious argument?

It stands to reason that if they are the #1 selling detail product, then more people have used their products. You can't very well be dissapointed in a product you've never used. If 10% of people who used any product hated it, then you'd naturally see more people voice disappointment over Meguiars simply because it's 10% of a bigger pool.

Maybe a higher percentage don't like Meguiar's and maybe a lower percentage than the average of products. Who knows. Your stated facts certainly don't indicate which of these it is.

Anyway, products I've been dissapointed in:

-303 Shower Shield: This stuff lasts about two days on the shower.

-NXT Booster Wax: This stuff is not easy to use at all (I'll look for your writeup Mosca)

-SuperShine PowerShine, Disappearing Glass, and the metal polish: They just weren't very good. The tire stuff was pretty good, though, but I don't like aerosols much.

-AIO via Cyclo

Some pleasant surprises:

-#16

-AutoGlym

-#80

-Final Detail

-ColorX

-303 Aerospace Protectant

Some stuff I've rediscovered (would be a neat thread):

-Crystal Mist

-Souveran

-AIO

Things I want to try:

-303's cleaner stuff

-NXT Glass Cleaner

-I'm curious about the differences in Meguiar's new towels from their current UW and WW, and how they differ from all the other towels I already have (especially their new cotton ones)

AIO it didn't last the 6 months the bottle says. Just joking, it is wonderful. But i think that companys hype their products, so you buy them, i think. And every person that applies a certain product is playing with many variables, different prep steps, temp, season, paint type and color and experience. So there is going to be some difference in opinion.

-I found NXT overhyped, it's ok but not special.

-I like some MF and not others.

-SG was very good until the last car i did, will still keep using.

-3M cleaner waxes, too much buildup on pad and paint, worked good on oxidized paint though.

-3M SMR is ok but i don't like the filler part.

-Meg's endurance is a pain to apply. Better out there.

Products i like:

-P21s very easy to use.

-303 is very nice.

-IP and FP with rotary.

-3M compounds and glaze with rotary.

-Zaino.

-AIO and SG(?)

-Hi-Temp's PPG is very good after IP.

-Mr Clean magic eraser.

-Las-Stik dust cloth.

Products that I won't say don't live up to the hype but I just don't like them:

DACP it just dusts too much and be a real dog to remove.

SFP I don't think I need to say anything about this.

1Z polishes, maybe I just don't get it.

Stuff I really like:

That blue MF that came with some of the Autogeek give away

Adams Polishing towel (if you haven't tried it, you really should)

Adams Detail Spray

Spray & Wipe

Last Touch

UPP

Klasse Twins

EX-P+

Poorboy's Wheel Sealant

Z6 and 7(haven't used Z2P or Z5 yet)

16

80

Hyper Dressing

Citri-Gel (anybody have some they don't want?)

Edit: How could I forget VM? I love the stuff and have over a half gallon of it!

Aurora40, I have that new cotton towel and you can PM me for info.

Sean, just curious why you rated these two, because I'd say out of a majority of your work, these two sealants seem to be very common for you. We're you just testing them out, or have you found something that is way better? I don't want this to sound like an attack, it just got me thinking. I've never used NXT, but I'm quite happy with EX-P. I wouldn't classify it with Klasse or Zaino, but 3+ months of beading is durable for me. Maybe we have different criteria for durability :nixweiss

I'd say a large majority of my products worked good for me, maybe not completely fulfill their claims/hype, but not many do. The only products this year that I wasn't to crazy for was the WG twins. The cleaner really didn't hide swirls and wasn't the easiest to work with. WG sealant didn't look bad when I first applied it, but durability was really short lived for me. I'd honestly rather use P21s; easier application, better look and durability thats on par with WG. But hey thats just my opinion. Take it for what its worth. :wavey

Johnny: Certainly :)

NXT and EX-P claim to be more or less pure sealants/polymers that will protect against the toughest bla bla bla...

I just found it interesting that I got better durability out of EX which is carnauba based. Yes I like NXT and EX-P for their good looks but 3 months is a bit disappointing for a "sealant"...I am hoping EX-P+ will shut me up :lol

Oh yeah, I'm gonna add Wolfgang's durability up there too...Great looks but for only around 3 months outdoors in the NE US.

Aurora40,

For the average person, Meguiar's products will exceed their expectations. I will never say I have tried all of Meguiar's products but I have used enough to be able to say I have moved onto other brands. I am not the only one that wonders how Meguiar's is so popular (looking solely at product performance) but the fact is you see Meguiar's at every car event, on TV, in magazines, etc. They're everywhere...marketing, and it gets the product known and builds hype! There are products that produce superior results and are more user friendly; only difference is they're not readily available like Meguiar's.

Like I said, they do have a couple of products I like.

You should have said this initially. That really stregthens the argument. "Look at the people who complain about this brand, it must really suck. My friends think so too." :bigups

Can you name any product for which this is not true?

I'm really not trying to get in a debate on it, though. Your original post was inflammatory and faulty in its logic. If you don't like Meguiar's stuff, that's cool, to each their own. If you want to list the specific ones you've used and didn't like, even better, that's what this thread is for. But if you want to say they only move product due to marketing and not due to the quality of any of their products, well that's inflammatory and unproveable.

Meguiar's has an advantage over other manufacturers in that they've been around for decades and have the resources for heavy marketing. I would be able to prove that marketing has been a key to Meguiar's success sooner than you could prove product quality has been the key. After all, if it were not for marketing, and all businesses to do it to some extent, no one would know about the services/products. They sell decent quality products but compared to many other products available, they're average.

My opinion is that we should stick to naming products and why/what we didn't like about them, and leave the discussion of the extraneous factors aside. There are enough products from various manufacturers here being named as "not living up to hype" that it is disingenuous to single any of them out.

For every product named here by someone as "not living up to hype/manufacturers claims", there are hundreds, if not thousands, of people who are using that product successfully. My opinion is that we should concentrate on finding out what products aren't doing what they should, see if we can get them to do it, and stating our results.

Maybe it is like Monster Cable...Megs is one of the largest if not the largest company in detailing and as such they can do a lot of marketing and their history has created some outstanding products. On the other hand, there are better products in some areas available from boutique manufacturers.

Like Monster, many audiophiles don't like their cables' sound and find often even cheaper high end cables sound better (I use Cardas :) )...Monster is going for the average or above average consumer who will pay some premium for better quality but maybe not spend the most amount of money for the absolute best. Perhaps Pinnacle Souveran may be the absolute best for black car carnauba but that is a specialty market that Megs is not going after.

Not sure if this is the best analogy since I like Megs products a lot better than I do the litigious Monster Cable but it shows two different market segments with corresponding different performance characteristics. :)

Easy, fellers. Let's not get our shorts in a bunch. I'm going to start a different thread...so instead of hijacking this one, we can give each other black eyes on that one arguing about Meg's, etc.

Mosca and Setec have the right idea :up

Let's stick to discussing naming products we found disappointing and why only

Silver Lexus,

Seems like a good comparison to me. Just because something is marketed as being the best certainly doesn't mean it is or will be for all people. Unfortunately, the "best" claim is used all too often with products and service.

Everything is relative. To someone that uses Zip Wax, Megs may seem like a big step up. I started with Megs and would imagine that most of us did. As I got more into detailing and wanted to learn more about it, I discovered new products. Most of them are more expensive than Megs and as a result they are better products.

Just like I started with a Kenwood receiver and Bose speakers and Monster Cable...today I've got a nice Harman Kardon AV receiver, Polks all the way around in my home theater set up and Zu cables for the most part...but I'm still using Monster for my rear surrounds (I can't see paying more for a cable run that the speakers cost)....there are still a few Meguairs products I use because they work for the job I need them to - like PlastX.

Since this is my first year as an Autopian, I can say that Iâ€â„¢m still in sensory overload where products are concerned, so take this with a grain of salt, please!

Products that didnâ€â„¢t seem to live up to my expectations include Poorboys QD+ (itâ€â„¢s a spray wax, not a QD) , NXT spray booster wax (didnâ€â„¢t seem to restore anything), Wolfgang Paint Cleaner (no improvement under Wolfgang Sealer), Top Of The Lineâ€â„¢s Black Carnauba Wax (again, my application showed no improvement in finish as a LSP), and Moose Wax.

Some surprising finds though (considering that nearly EVERYTHING was new to me.) NXT (I know, I know, but it simply looks GREAT on my black Spyder) , Poorboys EX, and most recently Four Star UPP (may replace NXT as my favorite) all exceeded my expectations by quite a bit. Hardly needing mention would be my Porter Cable 7424. An awesome tool.

Ed ! This was a WONDERFUL thread! Congrats !
