Overrated products

If it works well don't stop using it. I hate seeing people getting 'trapped' into online opinions.

It's more of a situation where I will just try something else when I run out of my SSR's.

Pretty much any wheel cleaner. I've never experienced anything that was spray on-hose off...even though many claim it. And as far as the gentle ones that say to agitate..I get the same results with car wash soap

I'll admit that I've been let down a little by many purchases..not because they were bad in any way..I just psych myself up too much :)

It seems alot of the posts arent necessarily products that are overrated, but products that didnt live up to the posters personal expectations.

I think PoliSeal is overrated, its not a joy to use, Zero durability, and seems to weaken the durability of anything put over top of it (except OOS). It makes a terrible base for sealants IME.

I read through this post and love it. As for my overrated products I have to say are anything from Zaino even though I do use it as requested by some of my customers. A close 2nd to that I have to say that the Poorboys line was a let for me in the past also. Now I just stick with Jeffs, Menzerna and select Optimum products.

How exactly are you using it?

Via PC, UDM or Cyclo, it is a piece of cake to apply and removes effortlessly. Works well with Opti-Seal (as you mentioned) and Acrylic Jett as well as carnaubas.

I guess it is like Meguiars DACP. I find it very easy to use but others have all kinds of problems with it. Good thing there are so many choices. :)

Wow there are some popular products here not being liked at all

I think the difference between my overrated products and everyone elses is how rigorously I test each product and on every surface

These few products I really hate with a passion

Forever black tire gel and trim dye

FK 1 2180

Clearkote yellow moose

Sonus trim kote (that stuff you use in your engine bay)

Mothers back to black, cali gold car wash

Pinnacle car wash

Wolfgang IDS (V1)

blue magic metal polish

CG's extreme slick QD. (smells like fly spray and does jack s)

Autoglym 01B polish, Yellow vinyl and rubber protectant, super resin polish

Meg's 00 wash, gold class wash, soft wash gel, #9 SMR (fillers), NXT, #34, pro clay bars, #40 natural protectant (smears), trim detailer (washes off whereas trim dream never will.

Products that I'm unsure about

Glare pro polish (works good by machine and hand but alcohol will remove it, showing all the marks again)

Does that mean the fillers in it will wash out?

DP Final finishing polish (lacks good gloss sometimes)

that's about it. everything else works great.

Oh and 106FF is absolutely the best machine finishing polish for me.

Sometimes optimum polish and hyper work and other times they don't do crap

ONR however is a brilliant QD and clay lube.

Poorboys Pro polish is sensational and SSR the best on clear and painted plastic.

What do you not like about Pinnacle's wash?

I think Menzerna products are overrated. I liked FMJ for it's looks and ease of use but it spoiled after a year on my shelf. It now smells like the inside of a fake leg.

Most Menzerna users probably think I'm crazy.

Huge Clearkote fan...

FMJ is not made by Menzerna AFAIK.

Pinnacle wash at the time (2004) didn't seem PH neutral. It dried my paint out and took all the slickness away.

Very poor sudsing too

Clearkote's just about to be left behind as well.

It's only saving grace now is as an ingredient in one of my mixes.

Won't be using them on paint anymore.

Oh and FMJ is not a Menzerna product.

Seems like alot or people bashing Zaino on here, I don't understand that. Products that are overated to me seem to be anything from turtle wax. I agree, no wheel cleaners really work, good old soap and water does fine.

Add me to the list of "Zaino bashers". Zaino looks great, lasts a long time, but it doesn't protect for crap, and it doesn't easily release surface contaminants.

LSP protection, at it's most basic level, should at *least* protect against hard water spots. Zaino fails this test miserably. Hard water eats through Zaino and bonds to the clear coat overnight. Having failed this test miserably, it's not surprising to also find that tree sap, bug guts, bird bombs and road tar are like knives through Zaino's butter; right through the Zaino coat and stuck on the clear coat like glue. What good is an LSP that looks good and lasts a long time if it's not providing protection and doesn't release surface contaminants?

I used Zaino for four years, and I'm glad to be rid of the stuff.

I have the same experience :sadwavey:

Water spots aren't a problem with those sealers I've been using

I have never really had an interest in Zaino

A friend gets eight months out of it but I can get more with cheaper stuff and total water spot protection.

+3

I was disappointed in the Z-AIO/Z-CS combo. It shines great, even when dirty, it beads great, but I didn't get much protection against bug etching and waterspots. :nixweiss I even removed the bugs daily using DP's Waterless Auto Wash. After my experience with Z-AIO/Z-CS and hearing others too, I am kind of doubtful I would want to try the Z2/Z5 sealants to see if they really would protect any better.

I cannot believe anything at TurtleWax could be considered overrated as a rule. It is cheap OTC stuff and everyone has written it off as junk. It may well be junk but you cannot get any worse reputation at least around autopia or other detailing web sites.

..........

I think most boutique brands are over rated. Mainly because people who spend their money on a product don’t want to think something cheaper could do/look as good.

Don’t get me wrong when properly prepared and applied almost any product line will give very good results. I’ll bet you could line up ten identical cars with ten different product lines and 100 people wouldn’t form a consensus as to which one looks the best. Especially, if no one knew what products where on what cars ahead of time. It’s all in the “opinion of the person looking.

I use Meguiars OTC products on this truck and I think it looks pretty darn good. :nana:

In the eye of the beholder hey

Well a select few boutique brands are overrated but many are way better than the industrial trash that dealerships commonly use.

They still think that you can't machine polish plastic and that dressings are the only way to make trims look their best.

There are subtle differences between polish brands. (clarity, brightness/darkness of paint, depth etc)

I find it very strange if you will that so many of us have complete 180 experiences from what others have had. I have never had water eat through Z and when washing the surface contaminants dejour come right off. One of the reasons I like Z so much is that its maintenance free for me.
