honda or toyota?

VW are very nice cars. I think their styling, fit and finish, and powertrains are awesome. They definitely are more "german," havig more soul to them than Honda or Toyota. With that said, I don't think most people preceive VWs as being as reliable as Honda's or Toyota's. Every VW owner I've ever known has had more problems with them. Most of these problems being electrical. I'm definitely not crazy about them being made in Mexico either.

I don't know about the current VWs for sale but the previous generation (late 90s to early 00s) were pretty terrible.

My friend has a 2001 GTI 1.8T which he purchased brand new. He babies this car, it is garaged and he drives it on the weekend only. Despite being a model made in Germany it has had all sorts of problems. The power windows stopped working, he couldn't start the car because the sensor for the anti-theft key stopped working, engine check lights all the time, faulty coil packs and the interior climate control knob snapped off. Luckily the car was under warranty but I could not imagine having one without the warranty!

Toyota has great reliability and excellent cars but as of now they do not have any models that really excite me. For me this is a big factor as I like having a car that's fun and exciting to drive.

i was just curious.... what is your preference & experience between the two auto companies?

I have owned a Honda Accord and currently a Toyota 4Runner. Honda never went to the shop (actually one very minor recall with the ignition switch.), unless for oil, brakes or tires. Not much fun to drive, but ultra dependable. The 4Runner has better build quality, materials and looks, but has had one recall and one unscheduled visit to the shop, otherwise bullet proof. I like the 4 Runner better, both are no hassel cars. I also own a BMW, which makes me appreciate the quality or simplicity of my Toyota or Honda, however it's a blast to drive in the twisties. I like the current Camry over the Accord at this point, but the Civic is perfect.

Oh, and I just got done driving my brother-inlaws Volvo 960? wth 170k on the clock, it runs great, but some minor glitches for a high miliage car. They also have an xc90, which if I detailed would win detail of the month for the biggest transformation. 80k and I don't think it has ever been washed, yuck :nono

few buddies of mine have had late model VW's and got rid of them within a year, they are really starting to suck IMHO...one of them a GTI had a factory sun roof and it leaked BAD, took it in for warranty repair 13 times, corporate warranty claims, new carpet 4 times, litterally had like yogurt growing in the back seat, he got an upper respirtory infection sued the dealership they bought the car back along plus a nice sum of money..I'd stay away from VW's..I've owned some Toyotas/Scions and Honda's..just went back to my honda roots with an 07 Honda Fit, and I think I'll probably continue to buy hondas as they work for me.

I have owned Honda Civic DX 1995. Never had any problem except radiator leak at 150K miles, and CV boots replacement at 120K. In 2004 I purchased brand new Honda Accord LX ... havent had any problems!

so my dad finally got to drive his 07' (been in the garage for almost a year) camry today as he sold his 98' honda accord. he would of driven the new camry alot earlier, but was waiting for the accord to give out. the point of this story... while it wasn't in the best of shape (for the most part the exterior) it had 250,000+ miles on it, and still was running with no signs of breaking down! while he says he won't buy another honda again (my dad is picky and says they're too loud, and just favors toyota over honda in general), that won't stop me from buying another one again... :up

p.s. i'll probably polish it out soon, as there are some DISO... :wall

Is it just me or is it getting harder and harder to tell the difference between Hondas and Toyotas.

With all car manufacturers trying to mimic style from others they are all turning into clones of each other. Even the mix between European and Japanese cars is getting more common. Just look at the older Toyota Corolla and the new VW Jettas.

I don't think the new Accord and the Camry look anything alike other then the fact that they both have 4 doors (except the Accord Coop). I am actually disappointed in the styling of the new Accord(except for the interior, pretty nice), at least the Sedan anyway. The Coop is ok I guess. Very glad they went with the 3.5 V6 to compete with the Camry and the Altima and it is now offered with 2 versions of the 2.4 which is kinda nice, though, i am shocked that the gas mileage is down on the 4cyl. I have always been a Honda guy but I also like Toyota too and have owned both. I like the new Camry and also the Altima Sedan and the new Coop too(very nice). They are both very different cars, it all depends on what you like.

Several people have touted that Toyota has better interiors, I much prefer a Honda interior, not as bland. Love the new Civic too, all the way around, damn nice.

Ok, enough rambling...

I personally choose Honda over Toyota. I like their styling a bit more and they are fun to work with, with lots of aftermarket support...for both non-performance and performance mods/upgrades/maintenance. I just get this weakish feeling from a Toyota. Perhaps I'm VERY biased towards Honda, but they seem to take abuse a lot better.

VTechFan02...its actually spelt VTEC by the way ;)

also, if it didn't mention it in that link... i read the magazine yesterday and the new accord was the winner between the two! :goodjob

i like the coupe styling better though...

I think TigerMike just proved my point with the Hyundai. It's just getting harder to distinguish cars as individual brands on the road compared to years ago when you could spot a quarter panel and say "hey, that's a Honda".

I would recommend Honda over Toyota. I don't have much experience with Toyota, but my brother has a civic that was my dad's before. It is still running great. It hasnt been to the shop at all and it is almost 4 years old. The only thing is that Honda has really high resale value's and it is hard to find a cheap honda unless they have over 100,000 miles on them.

Now that TigerMike pointed it out, the new Accord *really* does look like Sonata. My mother has had countless Toyotas and they have always been very reliable and a good car for her.

Well of course the Accord looks like the Sonata Honda and Hyundai have a partnership together to cut cost. That also include the sheet metal part. And if I remember correctly a friend of mine worked at a factory that produced parts for both Honda and Hyundai. The one Toyota in my family lasted to 200k before we didn't check the oil and it threw a rod. The only car that beat that was a Ford Thunderbird with 350K on it. Both of those car have been replaced with some variant of a Toyota. Except for my moms 500. I heard that the new Civics had a problem with the airbag covers coming off the dash board, and also an oil leak from an ill fitted oil pan, but the Sonata cam off scott clean.

And you get this info from??? I've *never* heard anything like it. They don't share any major components or sheet metal from *any* Honda or Hyundai that I've ever heard of.
