Griots Garage?

Nope, I feel just peachy today. Have I been testy in other threads today? I hope not.

The sense I got from RJJ in this thread was similar to the sense I got from others in the Clearkote discussion we had last month. If I feel something isn't right, I'm gonna express myself. My senses may not always be correct and I'm willing to pay the price for being wrong.

I watch both "Wyatt Earp" w/ Kevin Costner, and "Tombstone" w/ Kurt Russell all the time. I like Costner's Earp a little better but both Val Kilmer and Dennis Quaid deliver Oscar-winning performances as Doc Holliday. Great movies!!

I am much more of a Tombstone guy, and my wife, well it has VK in it, need I say more?

Negative boys. Kurt Russell in "Big Trouble in Little China" is the best! I love that flick. :xyxthumbs

Ok, back to the thread at hand. :D You can buy that stupid $76 nozzle for cheap at Home Depot. My HD is bogged down with them in the garden hose aisle. I bought mine on e-bay.

First and foremost, I apologize as I just noticed I misspelled your ID in my earlier post.

I must also admit that I only own the Bonaire hoze nozzle. No I would not buy the Griot's nozzle at $76. But as you pointed out, value can only truly be judged by the person footing the bill.

I also don't own any CleakKote product, but lots of folks here do and seem to find value in them. I don't care to purchase from them paying both state tax and shipping. There is not sufficient value there for me. Someone else may (and surely will) disagree.

I have watched Tombstone more often lately and have forgotten the Costner/Quaid performance. Add to the mix Dana Delaney and my heart (and other parts) heads for Tombstone. I don't remember if Quaid's performance showed the ravages of TB as did Kilmer's. If you want a good argument, I came across a website a while back hosted by a descendent of Ike Clanton. His claim was something to the fact that their family was victimized by history and they were really the good guys and the Earps were the bad guys.

Was the "just peachy" statement meant to be a pun, or as an advertisement for your state???

Playing devil's advocate here....

Where on the nozzle does it indicate that it's made in the USA, and what difference does that make?

I have their shut-off valve contraption thingy, and no where on it does it indicate that it's made in the USA, and frankly, I don't care where it's made.

Honda cars are made in the US, yet we call them "japanese cars". Chevrolet's are made in Mexico, yet they're American cars. Steel, aluminum, and other alloys can come from Russia, China, South America and so on...I wonder if the nozzle's materials are from the USA, or if it was simply assembled in the USA? Or, what if Griot's buys it, installs a rubber washer and then claims it's made in the USA?

So many things to consider...

But, I do know this - Griot's is famous for taking credit where credit isn't due...they claim that their verison of the Porter Cable buffer is "specifically made for them to not burn or harm paint." BS! The backing plate is a PC P/N 18001 - you can buy it anywhere for under $10. Why pay $199 for a $119 item?

They also sell those AutoArt caliper clocks for $10 MORE than the MSRP direct from the manufacturer...but, who am I to complain?

I wanted to buy that bucket they sell, but geez 80 bucks for a bucket??? I make a good living, drive what many would consider an expensive car but spending 80 bucks on a bucket is just insane. Someone did point to the MFG where you could buy it half price but I lost the link.

I think Griots is like a cult/Fraternity, once you waste that kind of money you feel compelled to say its the best, to admit otherwise would make you look bad.

To each his own, Zymol still sells $300 wax, and to think we get P21S for 14.99 a can.......

They do have some nice tools and I do like to look at the catalog, if for nothing else but to try to find it elsewhere for a fair price.

Please no flames, if your under the griots spell enjoy!

I know Quaid did a ton of research and starved himself to get the look just right. I like Kilmer's performance but I think Quaid's was more accurate and Costner's Earp was definitely closer to the real Wyatt than Russell's. But both are great. If you get a chance, watch "Wyatt Earp" again. Its a long movie but interesting to compare the two.

hahaha, neither. I'm feelin' just great, though. Thanks for asking.

But Autopia is still the king of my Detailing order vendor!!

Mine too! If you go to my gallery and look at my car I am sure you all can agree that Griot's came through for me on my black Civic. All I used was Griot's polish and BOS wax.

In the new #164 catalog, both descriptions state that the product is made in USA. However, there is no stamp on the product...

FalconGuy:

Zymol still sells $1200 wax too...

Does Barrio de Larry = Lawrenceville? I used to live in Buford...

That's my point exactly - certain folks are making a big deal over the nozzle simply because it's supposedly made in the USA, but the to the best of my knowledge, it doesn't indicate that anywhere on the product itself...it's simply an "after comment" by Griot's.

Take a look at my post in the following thread:

http://www.autopia.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22956

I have the original Bonaire Nozzle and bought the new one that you see every where. They have made some improvements to it, but also made it cheaper, aluminum and plastic is cheaper than brass and stainless, therfore incresing their profit.

I haven't seen the Griots nozzle in person yet. Maybe I should just order so I can compare it to the other two to the griots. I am a mechanical engineer and designer and have to design things to be cost effective at times. I am sure that the griots nozzle is not produced in the numbers that the bonaire is produced making it cost more to manufacture.

I believe that many of his things are customised versions of products already out there. I have done extensive research on trying to find who actually makes the stuff that he sells. They won't tell you, I tried to ask.

His storage cabinets are Lista brand, the steel wire shelving is made by metro. The spray can caddy and many of the red painted steel cabinets/storage bins are made by durham manufacturing, but you can't get them in red anywhere else.

Many of his hex/allen tools are made by Wiha as well as some of the srewdrivers and small pliers.

Todd,

Thank you for posting that, I've always wondered if the shelving he sells is available elsewhere.:up

I want to organize my garage further and the only place I find long term quality products that I like are in the Griot's catalog. I've looked locally for similar items but they always come up short usually in materials of construction.

Oops I wan't finished and clicked submit.

Even though many of his things that he sells is more expensive than other places it is not by much. May things I have checked on it has been by a couple of dollars, but some have been more. Even after all this searching I have done, I just received a $300 order from them today, the Vac'n Blow only $10 more than CMA and come with a couple of more accesories and a lifetime waranty. I bought the tool storage panel, haven't been able to find that anywhere, facom has a similar one and some interior cleaner and rubber cleaner.

The items were ordered on the 4th late afternoon and shipped on the 5th and received on the 12th. From Tacom, Wa to Doylestown, pa. Not bad I think. Once again I think griots is a great place to do business.

Well, I guess I'll throw my opinion into the mix. I like Bolton, have used the Griots nozzle (which I don't own) and the Bonaire nozzle. IMO, there is NOT $56 worth of difference between these nozzles. For those talking about the lifetime warrany from Griots, well, the Bonaire nozzle has a lifetime warranty also. If it ever busts, they give you a brand new one. For the price, the Bonaire nozzle gets my vote.

My 2 cents. :up

I will agree that the nozzle and some others items that he sells are way too expensive and there is a much better alternative product. I think I am up to about 6 cents now.:up

focused on was the hose end sprayer, let me elaborate some. The Bonaire unit is not the same thing, it may DO/Function in the same way but it is not the same.. I guarantee that it, the GG nozzle weighs a LOT, and I mean a LOT. I mean it is a weapon to be used for self defense. It feels like it was machined from a solid piece of billet metal (I assume aluminum) but it weighs a full pound on its own and I also have the water shut off so that adds even more weight.. Remember folks, mine was given to me with love from my wife, so watch the comments... is it worth the price? that is in the eye of the beholder.. and most would say no.. why? because you can go to the big orange building and get a plastic 5 pattern sprayer for less than a couple of bucks... it will do the same thing...

but as I said before..

The other thing I do like is that they sell all their products in like shaped and sized containers and their sprayer is great. This makes keeping things neater and more organized easier for me.

Will I continue to use them? sure, one of the reasons is ease, they are open 24/7, plus website, plus the return policy, plus there is some peace of mind when you order, such that if the product doesnt perform, you send it back and either get your money or get another of the same..

I also said very few topics generate this many posts. I do doubt that many detailers use their products day in and day out, since there are other products that come close in performance or may even exceed their performance at a lower cost, hence more profit for the detailer.. part of why people use GG is that generally their product is as good as something else out there. Since it is, it is a safe bet that, as the consumer, you wont have to return something back to them or have another bottle/jar of some product sitting on your shelf until you finally give it away or admit it didnt work and throw it out.. GG isnt for everyone, but I like 'em.. and so do a lot of others, even some that dont want to admit to it...

:wavey Dana

I have both the Bonaire nozzle and Griot's nozzle. There is a difference! The Bonaire has been relegated to watering flowers in the backyard. It's a great alternative though if you can't afford or don't want to afford a Griot's unit.

Joe

Two things - "Made in the USA" = Percentages. If a certain % of a certain product is made in the USA, whether it be materials or labor to construct, then it can be deemed "Made in the USA". The government has very strict % requirements for this.

Secondly, the US Customs Bureau has come a long way, so far that they have developed a data base that shows who is bringing in what, from where, and by whom. It is a great little tool to have to see where people are getting certain things. The only catch is that a yearly subscription is in the 10K range, and that is for one user name.

Gee,

I didnt think we were all done with this topic yet... Did we ever convince anyone that there is a difference between the Bonaire and the GG nozzle? or does anyone really care? because you are going to buy and use what you want to.... LOL.
