402,000 Mile Acura Legend

Those who have been around for a few years will remember my post from when I turned over 300,000 miles in my 1994 Acura Legend LS coupe.

http://www.autopia.org/forum/click-brag/99349-300-000-miles-showroom-clean.html

Someone resurrected the thread and asked for an update. Well, here you go!

Last month I turned over 400,000 miles. I drive a lot. I have hit the following milestones in this car:

100,000 miles: 5/20/2003

200,000 miles: 12/3/2005

300,000 miles: 7/29/2007

400,000 miles: 10/30/2009

Here is a video of when/where the 400,000 took place.

So that this qualifies as a Click and Brag with before/after pics, here are some photos of how the car looked this afternoon. I spent the weekend in Greer, Arizona at a cabin in the White Mountains. We got snowed on last night, and the roads coming back to Phoenix this morning were a salty mess. See for yourself.

My “twin” 1994 Legend is in the garage. That one is a 4-door, though.

It was a mess!

I promptly went to the car wash and high-pressure cleaned everything in the undercarriage. Then at home I washed with Meguiar’s, dressed the rubber & vinyl with Aero 303, and called it a day. This car is maintained regularly with the Meguiar’s 3-step system. Paint is 60% original. Hood, fenders, front bumper, and roof have been painted about 100,000 miles ago (the front end is showing some wear again). The rest is 15 years old. The clear coat on the trunk is starting to go but all in all the old girl still cleans up pretty well. Leather was replaced in 2004 with Katzkins. The rest of the interior is original.

I grabbed these pics tonight @ sunset in an empty office parking garage not far from my house. Since I last posted, I have added 2002 TL Type-S 17” wheels.

Maintenance records.

Taking OCD to the next level, I have every receipt for maintenance on this car, from new to current. It is on the original engine, transmission, clutch, axles, rotors, starter, suspension, exhaust… the list goes on. The original alternator and fuel pump went out just recently at around 400,000. The car does not smoke, leak, or burn oil. A couple of weeks ago it passed Phoenix emissions/smog testing with flying colors.

In case you were wondering, the maintenance receipts total up to $23,300 over the course of 15 years and 400,000 miles. That doesn’t include MOST sets of tires, registration, insurance, and other operating expenses.

See you at half a million!!

Absolutely tremendous - way to keep a great car looking the way it deserves to. Threads about this car are always a treat.

Looks great. Always start out with a new car wanting to keep it that long but haven't yet. Maybe the week old one I have will be ;)

So, what's been the biggest challenge keeping it up this long? What's the best recommendation for keeping a car that nice for that many miles?

wow, that is fantastic and looks equally as good in and out. Congrats. Acura should give you a new car at 500K (but I'd be you'd still drive this). Very nice ride. Like those.

Your last thread was one of my favorite reads, now this one trumps that one lol.

Do you have any dealings with Acura on this car? Are they interested in using yours for any more sales pitches or stuff like that?

you're an inspiration to me. i hope to take my 06 rsx to the same milage as you dude!

right now it has ~80k miles and people are always saying, what year is that car? and when i say its an 06, people dont believe me because they say it looks so new!

yay for car care lol

the 300k thread was epic, so i don't know where to put this one. Outstanding job maintaining her properly and i look forward to the next update!

Hey 4cruizn, I remember reading about your Legend a few years back on legend.org. Congratulations on your milestone.

I used to own a 1994 Legend LS as well. I purchased it brand new and it was meticulously maintained with factory OEM parts. Unfortunately, NOT ALL Acuras are made like this one. Mine had headgaskets issues various times, and headgaskets often go bad on these cars. The constant Arizona temperature is probably putting less stress on this particular car. Headgasket problems on the Legend is so common it's depressing. The auto transmission is also extremely jerky for no apparent reason. Radiator blew NUMEROUS times. The ownership of the Legend was a money pit for me. I have never owned a more unreliable car than the Legend. I vowed to never a Honda since the Legend, and I never looked back.

i bought my 09 frontier new, i'm not sure if i will make it to 400 K but when it has 50 k and 100 K i hope to have it in this condition !

awesome !

Hey congratulations, that is awesome, the car looks great.

You really do put a TON of mileage on that car....seems like almost 50K per year.

wow! I too remember reading the 300k thread!

My 18 month old Mazdaspeed3 hit 33,333 this morning on my way to work, so I'll be catching up to you someday, though I probably drive my car harder than you drive that Legend.

I wonder if Acuras are still made like this one, or were you just very very lucky.

Maybe a little of both. I definitely adhere to the maintenance schedule. You could probably get this longevity out of a lot of vehicles if you tried hard enough.

I don't really have a secret to share - just OEM parts, regular preventive maintenance, conservative driving habits. I certainly don't baby this car - it's seen hundreds of miles of dirt roads, snowy weather, 120 degree summer heat in traffic, an autocross competition, and two open road races. Just takes a beating I guess!

You're probably right! (Not about getting a new car, but about me still driving the Legend even if they did). Haha.

Nah, not that I'm aware of. Believe it or not I'm not even the record holder at one of the dealerships I use. They told me there's a guy in a first gen RL in the 500k's.

Your RSX will easily go this far!

Nice! Man, if you had changed you own oil you could have saved some cash

Oh, I know. Big time. 125 oil changes or some craziness like that.

it's in such excellent shape for it's age and miles, keep it up!

You know it - thanks!

I couldn't keep my own car that clean if I tried.. Huge props...!!

Thanks!

how long are you planning on keeping it?

No plans to retire it just yet. I've already got a back-up car (the 4 door Legend that you see in the background of a couple of the pics) but I don't drive it. That one only has 138,000 on it.

Right you are! :)

Everyone's ownership experience is a little different. I'm definitely aware that like any car, the Legends have their weak spots. I've dodged the head gasket bullet on this one though.

awesome !

Thanks!

That sounds about right. It's all just leisure travel too. I've hit almost 40 of the 50 states, including Alaska.
