Just a guess but I doubt those extras actually add much more than a 2 or 3 dollars to the price.
Again these are just uneducated guesses but I'd think things like DVD's, fancy applicators and such are just there to give the wax a bit more of a 'special' feeling. Souverne comes in a fancy bag that is useless but it makes it makes it seem higher end to some customers.
Refills probably work out similarly for them, anyone have stats on how many tubs they never see again? If only 30% or so of the people come back for more then it is like rebate offers where most people don't ever get around to mailing them in. The upfront offer sounds good and gets the sale but the additional cost for the company doesn't arrive. Not that it wouldn't be cool to get a full size tube for half the price but it just isn't as simple as that.
Also you are dissecting the prior special too much. Taking a 2 for 1 sale apart sounds great but often it is just like the free items, companies are happier to have the 1 sale for $100 rather than have to mess with two sales for $50. It costs less in time and processing and you only need half the number of customers on your site. And, this is a big and, is that those had freeze damage. They worked fine from what I've seen but they weren't acceptable to sell as first quality so they probably wanted to move them out of inventory fast and get on with things.
good point too, termigator, part of what makes the fancy waxes so appealing is they aren't the ones that everyone has. It is a wax you aspire to own.
