This one is trashed...

Todd@RUPES

Just a regular guy
I am debating doing a full click and brag on this one but have been very busy. This one was VERY bad, acid rain, scratches, rids, etc...

But 35 hours later it looked like this ;)

It took a lot of this...

This one isn't even the worst car that Brian and I have worked on lately...

That title would belong to this original 1990 ZR1 Vette...

Todd, I have much respect for your work and constantly set my standards higher as I learn more from this great site. As I have begun to further my paint correction abilities, I have some brief questions for you. Mainly, what grit sand papers are you using? What seems to be your plan of action when correcting a car such as the ones that you have displayed here for us? Any preferred wet sanding paper brands? What pads and polishes are you partnering to follow-up the wetsanding? Thank you for yet another great post of what capabilities one may gain from continued practice and education!

I think it would be an injustice if you didn't post a detailed thread on each detail! I see the Ferrari took you all day Sunday too? What a mess.

Todd, I think you should do C&B's on them both. If you are pressed for time, I say do it on the Black Ferrari.

Thanks for the kind words.

After washing the car and inspecting it we had noticed a lot of water etching on the front/trunk and a lot pimples on the door panels and hood, so each area required different techinques.

The doors where sanded with 1500 grit 3M paper using a soft foam backing plate and followed up with 2000/2500 Meguiars Uni Grit.

The front/trunk was much worse. It was sanded with a hard backing plate and 1500 grit, followed by 2000 3M, then 2500 and 3000 Meg's unit grit...

Only to find that the water etching remained, so the paint was cut again, then each individual etching was removed using 1500 grit, then re blened with finer and finer Meguiars sanding paper.

You can see here that Brian began re-sanding the remaining etching...

I prefer Meguiars UniGrit for 90 percent of the wetsanding I do. To me it cuts cleaner, lasts longer, and leaves an easier finish to polish out. Well worth the cost IMO.

As far as polishing, I use just about everything. 3M Extra Cut (3000 series) worked perfectly on this paint and this was followed by Mark V Uno on various pads.

Yeah the Ferrari took all day Sunday. Brian was working a little slow, or maybe it was the beer that you guys shot gunned together the night before? Thanks David for getting Brian drunk before another trash on the Ferrari.

Seriously though thanks for your help on Saturday.

Great correction work on the Black Ferrari guys :2thumbs: and I do remember the Corvette too. So David got Brian trash the night before, now that's a good story.....:chuckle:

Oh boy what a mess. Much better now.

What do you guys think of the Flex LK603VVB vs the Mikata?

The Flex LK603VVB looks *exactly* like the old Porter Cable rotary that is no longer made. I mean, it's a *dead* ringer. The only difference is the color of the plastic housing. I had the old Porter Cable rotary. It was very noisy, right up til it's death this last spring. I wouldn't touch that new Flex at half the price.

TH0001- Great work per usual, thanks for sharing these. I can't get over how much you get done in a given period of time!

A few Qs-

Was the ss on the Ferrari on the soft side?

Did you take measurements in the course of all that correction (not on the 'vette of course ;) )?

What did you use in-between the letters on that "Ferrari" badge?

I don't think it's fair for you to judge the Flex when you have no experience with the product. Even if it looks similiar it could be upgraded in the areas that caused the Porter Cable to fail. I'm just saying...

My 3401 VRG is an awesome machine. It screams professional when you look at it...much more so than the Makita. I wouldn't trade my Makita for the world but you know perception is huge for people that aren't in the know.
