Todd, I have much respect for your work and constantly set my standards higher as I learn more from this great site. As I have begun to further my paint correction abilities, I have some brief questions for you. Mainly, what grit sand papers are you using? What seems to be your plan of action when correcting a car such as the ones that you have displayed here for us? Any preferred wet sanding paper brands? What pads and polishes are you partnering to follow-up the wetsanding? Thank you for yet another great post of what capabilities one may gain from continued practice and education!
Thanks for the kind words.
After washing the car and inspecting it we had noticed a lot of water etching on the front/trunk and a lot pimples on the door panels and hood, so each area required different techinques.
The doors where sanded with 1500 grit 3M paper using a soft foam backing plate and followed up with 2000/2500 Meguiars Uni Grit.
The front/trunk was much worse. It was sanded with a hard backing plate and 1500 grit, followed by 2000 3M, then 2500 and 3000 Meg's unit grit...
Only to find that the water etching remained, so the paint was cut again, then each individual etching was removed using 1500 grit, then re blened with finer and finer Meguiars sanding paper.
You can see here that Brian began re-sanding the remaining etching...
I prefer Meguiars UniGrit for 90 percent of the wetsanding I do. To me it cuts cleaner, lasts longer, and leaves an easier finish to polish out. Well worth the cost IMO.
As far as polishing, I use just about everything. 3M Extra Cut (3000 series) worked perfectly on this paint and this was followed by Mark V Uno on various pads.
