This one is trashed...

TH0001- Great work per usual, thanks for sharing these. I can't get over how much you get done in a given period of time!

A few Qs-

Was the ss on the Ferrari on the soft side?

Did you take measurements in the course of all that correction (not on the 'vette of course ;) )?

What did you use in-between the letters on that "Ferrari" badge?

It should be noted that Brian and I worked on the car together and we both had our game faces on. Aside from the rare walk around and pace, this was straight work. Just go go go...

Yes I measured the paint many times during the process, starting with an average 6.7 mils. When we measured some of the deep rain etching that measurement would drop to 6.3 mils, so we knew we had some cutting to do.

This is the 6th original paint Boxer I have done (and Brian's 4th) in the last year. We are pretty comfortable around this paint. The weird thing (4 of them red, 1 blue) is that they have all had somewhat different paint, even red ones from the same year. This one was fairly soft and somewhat of a PITA. It was in the middle as far as correction goes and wetsanding marks (3000 grit) where fairly easy to remove, only taking 2 to 3 passes with a wool and Extra Cut to level completely flat and remove any minor tracers.

However getting the paint hologram free was some what troublesome because everybody product used wanted to fill, regardless of brand.

I don't think it's fair for you to judge the Flex when you have no experience with the product. Even if it looks similiar it could be upgraded in the areas that caused the Porter Cable to fail. I'm just saying...

My 3401 VRG is an awesome machine. It screams professional when you look at it...much more so than the Makita. I wouldn't trade my Makita for the world but you know perception is huge for people that aren't in the know.

I have/use/enjoy a Flex 3403. And it may not be fair for me to judge a product I haven't used, but it would be *very* odd for that product to look exactly like the old PC and not share at least some DNA. Most everyone (including myself) has had good experiences with Flex equipment (although Holden_04 might be an exception ;) ). Until enough people have had experience with it to give it a reputation, i'm still gonna stay away.

Still, you guys are quick by my (utterly non-professional) standards!

Ah, at least that's nice and thick. Can't beat old-school singlestage IMO but then I'm kinda old myself :D

Well, I bet they were more "hand-crafted" back then, compared to more recent models. Good and bad aspects to that, mostly good IMO.

I gotta try the 3M EC/wool combo, sounds like a good way to save time while keeping the risk of damage to a minimum.

I wouldn't have expected it to take something that aggressive to remove 3K scratches though, let alone on black ss

Now *that's* interesting! I never had much trouble with holograms on singlestage back in the day, but I have never-ending hassles with them on b/c! When somebody of *your* ability talks about PIA holograms it really gets my attention and I never woulda thunk it on ss paint.

The Flex LK603VVB looks *exactly* like the old Porter Cable rotary that is no longer made. I mean, it's a *dead* ringer. The only difference is the color of the plastic housing. I had the old Porter Cable rotary. It was very noisy, right up til it's death this last spring. I wouldn't touch that new Flex at half the price.

The exterior is absolutely the same, and the sound and motor response is very similar. I don't know if the Flex has different internals though.

The Flex in the picture is Brian Brice's. He had it for a month or so but one thing we noticed is that the motor would bog (probably 300-400 rpm drop) with any contact to the paint. The more pressure the more bog, until you pressed very hard, then it would speed back up. This was my biggest complaint (though you kind of learn to work around it, and start adjusting your technique which was fun in the challange of it).

Luckily Brian bought it from CMA. As typical with their excellent customer service, they replaced the unit a month later (and used) no questions asked. I haven't had the chance to try the new (and not defective) polisher, but Brian assures me that it is awesome.
