The Best Chamois/Drying Towel!

I bought a 4 pack of Arnold Pads and 2 x WW MF drying cloths (20" x 40") from winnerscircledetailingproducts.com in July.

As a new purchaser I got 10% off for my 1st order, so with shipping the lot cost me US$56.89. Great value and excellent service.

Having been a genuine Chamois user for 35 years, I am amazed on the drying performance of WW MF. The Chamois is used just for the final pass on the windows only now.

I've tried a lot of different methods for drying my car. Here's why I don't use these methods anymore:

1. Chamois - they don't last terribly long, other materials hold more water, and have no knap to hold dirt away from the paint (just in case).

2. Absorber - last much longer than a chamois, other materials hold more water, and have no knap to hold dirt away from the paint (just in case).

3. California Water Blade - Only removes about 80% of the water (so you need to go over the car a second time with a towel or something) and could potentialy drag dirt particles across your paint causing scratches.

What I do use is the Griots Garage Waffle Weave Micro Fiber Drying Towel. I use the Griots towel, because it's bigger than most and it has hand pockets sewn into the corners which make it easier to use. However, I think you can't go wrong with other high quality WW Micro Fiber towels. The reasons I use a WW MF towel are:

1. Good ones are very durable so they last forever

2. Micro Fiber holds tons of water (I use one Griots WW MF towel to dry my whole car)

3. Have knap which will scoop up dirt and hold it away from your paint. So no scratches if you miss a spot while washing.

Ok, so WW are way better than chamois.

Im taking it that all WW are the same quality because everyone is mentioning different brands inluding pakshak, big blue and monterry with no comments on why one is better than the other.

No they're not all the same quality.

Some are thicker than others, and/or softer than others. Some hold more water before they start streaking.

Some have corner pockets, some have different edges, some are tagless, some have a different polyester/polyamide ratio...

Ok, ill read all the descriptions i can find on the ones in the states and order one through.

So which do autopian gurus think is

1) softest

2) thickest or most plush

3) absorbs more water

4) best polyester/amide ratio

between big blue, pakshak, sonus and monterry?

Out of those choices, I've only tried the Monterey WWs. But I can tell you that they're soft enough, and absorbent enough to make me halt my search for more WWs.

I have a couple of Excel pacific blue WWs and a WCD WW, and those get used on customer cars. They aren't as soft as the Montereys. Those I save for my car only :)

While we're on the subject. What would be the best way of cleaning a chamois? I have a sheepskin chamois and since I'm still learning, I don't want to end up burning it in the dryer or something.

a true chamois is not washable. You said it's sheepskin so I'd guess that you could just wash it in the washer with normal detergent if you wanted. I've only washed my sheepskin mitt once, and I just vigorously swished it around in a bucket of warm soapy water. Other than that, I just rinse it off after each use.

I recommend hand washing with a mild Wool Wash detergent. I have used normal washing machine detergent and found that the Chamois comes out with a greasy/slimy feel as the detergent seems to cling and takes a lot of effort to rinse out.

Do not attempt to speed up the drying process by putting into a dryer.

A work collegue reckons he has a genuine Chamois which is over 20 years old. He puts it away wet in a plastic container and never lets it dry out completely. To me this is a no-no and against manufacturer's recommendation as the Chamois will develop mould and rot.

Back when I was using a genuine chamois, I used to put it away wet sometimes. I'd just throw it in my wash bucket and forget about it. It lasted me about one season, when it started to develop lots of holes in it. As I kept using it, these holes got very big. It was probably about another month before I ordered two WWs from Patrick and threw that chamois away.

I think my dad pulled it out of the garbage though, for use on his cars (in the rare instance that he washes one of them).

I found the vroom (Target brand) Drying Microfibers to be really good, they are huge, and hold water very well, and are around 7 bucks. They have not left any marks what so ever on my paint. I have used many different Microfibers and these seem pretty good.

I have used plenty of chamois cloths in my detailing experience...

I still think absorber does the best job and lasts rediculously long...

you should try the microtex big blue mf drying towel from wal-mart, it's slightly better imo.

How much do they cost at Walmart?

I must admit I would be keen on getting WW MF with the pockets, which have been mentioned earlier in this thread.

I've used most of the Meguiar's products listed and lots of premium chamois and other microfiber towels. I consider the Meguiar's Water Magnet Drying Towel the best of them all. Very effective and leaves a streak free finish without any marring. :up :up :up

I agree! I now have 5 Water Magnets and wouldn't give a single one away!

The Water Magnets are great. And keep an eye out at Targets. Monday I picked up two Water Magnets towels on clearance for $2.84 each. They were the last ones. I've been to three other local Targets and haven't found any more. Maybe it was a store clearance or something.
