Second Thoughts On Clearkote Products

I like the Clearkote products. However, after using S100, I really wonder if Moose Wax at $20.00 plus $8.00 shipping is cost effective versus S100 at $14.95 with no shipping charges. Further, you get mANY more applications per jar!

What prompted this thread, is I applied Moose Wax to one door of my black Santa Fe. It looked VERY nice. I then applied S100 to the adjacent door. I could see no meaningful difference!

Also influencing my thread, is that the MW separated big time. The container of MW is now 50 percent clear liquid. When I shake vigoursly t separates almost immediately. It didn't do this previously. This fact plus the $8.00 shipping charge per order makes me question whether I'll consider reordering this stuff.

I think the big difference is the ability to use Moose Wax in the sun , second I believe that Moose Wax will last longer than S100. I can not back this up just yet but I'll be doing a head to head comparison to see which one last longer.

As far as the clear liquid problem , I was told to dump some of that out and it will work better. You may want to check with Scottwax to make sure.

I think it all depends on what you want out of a wax. Like detailbarn said, it goes on in the sun, a definite major plus for any detailer, and it lasts longer, another bonus. My return is good enough that I can afford the 8 bucks more to be able to apply in the sun and last longer.

I have used s100 and all the VM prodcuts. I have noticed that you need to shake the VM & VW products well. But you need to shake most products anyway, I always shake the products before I apply them (habit I guess).

What you should do is instead of trying them out on different doors, use them together on the same door and look at the difference.

clear kote prodcuts are easy to use and can be used anywhere.

They are at the top of my list

I did just that as well. I put a "strip" of S100 about 6 inches wide down the MW door. I could see no difference. Again, at $8.00 per order shipping charges, I have to rethink my enthusiasm for Clearkote. I can get Meg #9 and Meg #7 at my local Pep Boys.

Ray, why don't you just keep the Moosewax for days when you are in direct sun, for me this is worth the extra money. I am using S100 as my first choice but going to use Moosewax in the sun (haven't used it yet, i will this weekend).

I think Moose Wax and S100 are very close in terms of shine and depth. Yes, Moose Wax is more expensive compared to S100, but you can use Moose Wax in the sun which for me is a huge plus. In addition, if you are in a hurry and don't have time to use a seperate polish and wax, you can use Moose Wax by itself and get outstanding results.

I have the advantage of being able to buy most Clearkote products from a shop, so I don't have shipping costs to pay.

Last time I checked he still had to pay taxes. So do I, even if I order directly from ClearKote.. PLUS shipping. How do you like THEM apples.

:shocked

Everett charges $8.00 shipping no matter the order size. Have you looked at UPS charges lately? $8.00 is a steal. If all else fails, try to find a local distributor. They might be willing to ship it to you via 3rd class or parcel post to save you on shipping.

I've applied S100 in the sun and didn't have a problem. I don't understand where Clearkote has an advantage here.

If you want a cleaner wax (which is what Moose wax is) why not just go to your local parts store and get whatever you want? Why pay $28 for something that's pretty much the same as most $10-15 cleaner waxes?

I agree Bret. I have some ClearKote on the way for testing, hopefully it will arrive this week. I can't imagine why there is such a big fuss over a non-layerable cleaner wax. I will see first hand soon enough.

S100... I applied it last night (around 10 pm without much light), needless to say, I missed some spots... I drove the car today under the hot weather we're having here (around 30deg Cel) for 2+ hrs and found unbuffed S100 on some spots. Each spot is around 3 sq. inches in size, buffed off cleanly with my MF... no streaks.

Have you tried it on black paint under direct sun on 100 degree days? I've only found two waxes that you can apply in those conditions without streaks or problems removing...Moose Wax and American Shine's Carnuba.

Maybe on light colored cars, there is less of an advantage, but I detail a lot of black vehicles and I don't always have shade, so having a product that works well in the sun helps a lot.

Why do people pay $70 for Souveran when S100 is $15? Very little difference performance-wise, in fact, on any color other than black I think S100 looks better.

I paid $14 plus tax for my last bottle of Moose Wax. :nixweiss

I've used a lot of cleaner waxes and Moose Wax is the best I've used in terms of shine and depth.

Yeah, the shipping charge seems high, but it cost me $12 to mail a pint of Vanilla Moose and 16 oz of Quikshine to NY Detailer and I didn't package the products as well as Clearkote ships. They use bubble wrap and foam peanuts...which I save so now I have a plethora of both to ship stuff now!

Personally, if I was ordering, I'd get more than just one pint of Moose Wax to make the shipping charge more tolerable. If you get several products at once, then $8 isn't so bad.

Scott, I would pass out and bang my head on the hood if I did a car in 100 degree sun :D. Btw, I don't think most polishes/waxes come in clear bottles (e.g. meg's, mother's) like Clearkote. Probably because their stuff seperates too and don't want to freak out those non-clean-car-nuts out there.

Me, I used VM once so far and like the results. I'm going to stay with s100, though. Applies fine in 70-80 degree sun and I'm partial to paste wax. Goes on like butter and tastes great on blueberry muffins :).

Uh, does it make sense to compare a cleaner and non-cleaner wax? Or did I just step back in to the you're-a-noob zone again?

$14 for a pint of Moose Wax? That's a nice 30% discount. What is that, distributor pricing?

Speaking of distributors, please explain this comment from OT:

So, how is Moose Wax from Clearkote rankin the Guru Report's Wax test?? I just ordered Clearkote and curious to find out.

They didn't test it, but I know a bunch of people on Autopia.org who've ordered Clearkote products and love them...in fact, two of them are now distributers!

And while we're on the subject of distributors, clipped directly from Clearkote's website:

I must say there was a buzz going around autopia about your products, personally I thought it might be hype but after trying them I must say wow! I have not used the Vanilla Moose yet but I have used the Moose Wax and my favorite Quick Shine. I give your products a 10, they work as promised and your company has great customer service. I will be soon placing an order with you for some products, I have to take inventory on what I have and see how much I'm going to be ordering. I was also interested in seeing if I could purchase the products for the purpose of resale. Thanks for your time and I look forward to a long business relationship.

It's becoming more and more clear to me that some of the Clearkote proponents are receiving some sort of preferential treatment from Clearkote in exchange for their positive commentary. Whether that treatment is in the form of a large discount, free products, or the financial benefits of being a distributor of their products, something is going on behind the scenes and Autopians are possibly being duped and deceived.

All of the "testing" I've read of Clearkote has been anecdotal and subjective. I've seen no MSDS, no chemical anaysis, no objective comparisons of their products.

Obviously Clearkote (a little family owned company) is benefiting greatly from the exposure at Autopia and other places. While I'll never begrudge someone for making a buck, I am a bit offended at the lack of full disclosure from some of their promoters.

If an Autopian has a financial stake in the sale and distribution of a product, the entire community deserves to know the facts of their involvement so that we can decide for ourselves whether or not the info we read about it is being manipulated in some way without our knowledge.

Scott mentioned that he gets his products from a local speedshop which carries Clear Kote stuff so i dont know what theyre pricing is. Also, if you get their "Show Special", you get 30% off right off the bat (available to everyone).
