Searching for linear logic, but none to be found :( ---just need to vent

So I have worked for this company since November of 2014. I have never had a m-f schedule. It has always bothered me but I trucked along as I was fed carrots of a potential m-f schedule based off my tenure.

We just finally got to apply for schedule changes and work from home in my department on Jan 1st. All I wanted was a m-f schedule.

Every month I request it and the next month I am denied ... the email simply reads "business need"

yet nobody can explain said business need. what the heck is going on?

So I get approved to work from home (which I really don`t want to do but I need a change as this job has became monotonous and I`m only staying in this dept because it`s easy and I don`t want to have to do more work here for the same or just a little bit more pay.

So I took wfh and was told I`d be on the next round of schedule changes.

Well today I hear cheers of joy from across the aisle as the girl who was hired over a year and a half after me has just received her m-f schedule. Awesome, happy for you I say...as I relish receiving the same email that is obviously going to come to me soon enough since it`s based off of tenure and I`m the next tenured rep in line.

I hear joys from other reps and chatter of how the rep was offered an alternative schedule (you can only request ONE schedule change, there is NO spot for "hey i`ll also come in earlier if I have to in order to get a m-f schedule" or anything like that.

With that in mind...this rep is offered three different options different than her requested schedule as the other options would "fit business need" currently...so she takes her pick of which one works best for her.

I think to myself...wow this is awesome they may even let me come8-5 or something instead of 9-6..i mean i`ll be working from home so it wont be hard to do that, right.

So I get the email denying my schedule change request "business need"

WHAT ? REALLY ?

This has to be some mistake.

"email her back, that`s the same girl who was offering me different schedules that would be approved...she`s awesome!" comes from the aforementioned girl in the row next to me

So I email the schedule person back.... no answer

During the time I`m waiting I ask the other girl (mentioned first) if she can email the same person and get a response...which she does and she does get a response.

Keep in mind my email was sent before this.

Then I lose it and have to take a break to get some fresh air and I took my car out for a quick shakedown _ thank heaven for horsepower and torque!!!!

Anyways I figure she`ll have emailed me back within 20 mins, right?

So I check my email...she went GHOST..(away from desk) and then out of office.

Come to find out she has left for the day. took a half day. MUST BE NICE!

So I`m wanting to leave the office for the day and weekend for that matter but then I realize I have no more earned time benefit to use if I do that and I may jeopardize my DF trip, so I have to bite my tonge and be a big boy.

Stripped of reasoning, stripped of logic, stripped of my will to perform my job (which I am damn good at btw).

My hopes of proper work life balance hang on a tightrope and I have no balancing rod.

I am so frustrated right now that I have tears in my eyes as I`m typing this. And they don`t bead the way I want them to- lol.

Okay thanks for letting me vent. Now back to work.

Is it possible to form a logical argument for work life balance discrimination relative to procedural guidelines on schedule changes ? because I`m forming the argument in a separate document for my visit to HR on Monday.

Sounds like its time for a new job. This sort of nonsense will continue to happen until you change the game and leave. Believe me. Been there - done that enough to know.

sure simple answer .. you are too valuable to limit to ordinary hours and I bet when something special come up , they call you in for the job ... it`s tough to be good !!

yea don`t remind me..im just not ready to do that yet...it took me FOUR years to find this job... nobody wants to hire someone with a Masters these days....in Austin there are PhD`s waiting tables b/c they can`t find work..its a brutal job market here..brutal... I`ve Very thankful for this job but just want an explanation that makes sense

they had me train my supervisors when they came over from another department!

What do you do for a living?
I am surprised to hear that about the job market in Austin if you have a Masters or PhD?
You either need to make your case to your supervisors/ person scheduling as to why you would like the M-F change or request to know what the business need is to have you committed to the same schedule? Or the other choice as mentioned may be to start actively looking for a new company or new position?

Hope you get it figured out its not a fun feeling to be denied something but not given a valid explanation especially if you are a hard working employee and go above and beyond.

Some times people get what they want over others that are more actually qualified for it because if their life situation

Does the girl have kids ? I have Seen that one give first choice of scheduling, less hours, more days off etc

Maybe the person not emailing you back just plain doesn`t like you. That`s also a possibility

Sorry to hear it, Brandt. I grew up in North Austin, and worked in Austin 2 different times after getting my degrees in engineering. Couldn`t take the horrible work environments either time.

That`s how I ended up in Houston the first time, and now College Station (hopefully permanently - I like it here).

No easy answer for your predicament; my answer has always been to find somewhere else, even if moving cities.

Nick

right. I thought about that too. I`ve thought about all kinds of possibilities and variables... which makes this worse... if you can get any idea of how I think based off of my threads,,you can understand how I don`t like to be in the dark.. at all.. I have to know the WHY of things so I can dismantle them when seen fit and rebuild them to their proper function .. but this girl took the afternoon off and Nobody, I repeat NOBODY in this company will address this.

the other girl has no kids..she has been here one year and 3 months less than me... so the only two parameters they use are internal tenure and Progressive (my employer) tenure... both of which I have at least a year plus more than her on

at least my supervisor is fighting for me.. she said she agrees this makes zero sense and she let me go out to vent with a smoky burnout down the road from the office

I`m a senior insurance claims adjuster for Progressive .. MSAS (masters of science in applied sociology--I .e. statistics and research), BSAS (same but bachelors) , BA double majored in English too ironically enough

Most businesses will ride a good horse until it gives out. It seems counterintuitive but it happens. The better you are, the more they expect from you. If you feel you are not getting the respect you deserve and you are good at your job it may be time to test the job market. It is always better to leave on your own terms. Find a job where you are happy and respected. You only get one life, so don`t waste it being unhappy or feeling disrespected. But at the same time be careful and don`t burn any bridges, everyone can be replaced.

It`s all part of the game, my last office job was similar with people playing favorites and all that BS. I eventually checked out mentally and stopped working overtime, I started pacing myself and not stressing over anything and just saw it as a paycheck, not a career. If you let it eat you from within it`ll drive you nuts and you may flip out on someone, almost happened to me and there were days where i just wanted to leave and never come back.

I recently got offered to come back to my previous employer and my response was "sure, if you double my salary" which I knew was unrealistic based on how tight they are and i was not expecting a "yes" . I hear you on the degree situation, my cousin busted her behind studying to become a Doctor and once she was ready....everywhere she went they told her she was over qualified and she ended up having to take a completely different career path by working Retail (she`s doing good now managing a large store and what not but still wasted all those years studying for something she never got to do) .

I spoke with my old supervisor who is really good at explaining things and he thinks the lady just overlooked it and couldn`t own up to it so she probably figured she`d just let it slide like I wouldn`t do anything..but he said He knows me better than that, but just to be careful with my words because the way I talk to people can be perceived as me talking down to them because they don`t generally understand my (proper) word usage.

This 100%. Don`t expect your employer to be loyal to you, even though that`s what they expect from you. In the end you`re most likely just a number on their spreadsheet.

Yeah simple minded people think that because you are bringing up a concern , that you are being confrontational and disrespectful so approach with care.

Screw it, use that English major, and get your point across very eloquently, use lots of big words:)

well thankfully they do that stupid tony robbins color thing here... so I am using that to my advantage because the higher up suits here swear by it although I have systematically destroyed it on several occasions...so the irony of using it to my advantage here is quite palpable but sufficiently necessary
