Once again, I am being hounded for x-mas gifts. Last season, it was the PS3. I remember paying too much for it.

Whats the game to get a 11 year old this year. This will be his and her first video game.

Price is not a consideration. I dont want to get them a PS3 and hear the, "you should have bought us an XBOX".

I have no clue what to buy. I am almost temper to buy them both (they are twins, but their parents will be PISSED if I do)

Thanks for the guidance.

That's funny. There are 3 of us at work thinking of getting a gaming system for something to do this winter. I don't play any games in the summer but in the winter a play maybe a few hours a day. I have a PS2, PS1 and an Atari 2600. At first I was thinking the Wii looked pretty cool, then after looking at the games I noticed they where more cutesy games for kids (no offense to anyone, I by no means look at them all). The PS3 is cool but just doesn't do it for me. I decided on the XBOX 360 and so did the other two guys at the office.

If it's between the XBOX 360 and PS3 I voted XBOX. However for 11 year old twins the Wii might be kind of cool. I don't have any kids so I'm not sure what's cool so hopefully someone else will jump in too.

We have a Wii, PS2, PS3, DS light and PSP's. Of all of them my son, the 7 year old "gamer" plays the PS2 the most. Ton of games available and cheap at that. That said, I'd get a PS3 if I were buying right now as at 11 years old, they will simply love some of the games that are coming over the next several weeks to the PS3 namely Ratchet and Clank. PS3 is ~90% backward compatible with PS2 games, is a pretty good multi media center, a really good upscaling DVD player and of course is arguably the best blue ray player on the market at any price.

Thanks spoiled man.

I bought a PS3 for my other brother-in-law (kids) last x-mas. I know he uses it to watch "300" in Blue Ray among others. They have a 1080p TV with HDMI, Im sure they all could enjoy the PS3.

My concern is when they go to school and other kids have xbox 360, or more have the PS3? I dont want to waste the gift.

Some will argue this as well as the two systems are like Zaino threads but *I* feel that the PS3 is more future proof as well.

Whichever you decide to get just purchase it from Costco. They have an excellent return policy.

They still have one of the better return policy, but it has changed. It's no longer an unconditional guarantee on some electronics. I don't know if the electronics return policy applies to video game systems or not.

I'm in the same situation deciding on whether to get a PS3 or an Xbox 360, except this will be for adults. I currently have a PS2 and I'm not the gamer I once was. My wife and I enjoy games like Karaoke Revolution. I'm really interested in Rock Band and having the ability to play with other gamers online, so I've been afraid that Sony's free online network won't take off just like what happened with the PS2. At least with Xbox Live they have their network established.

Currently, I'm leaning towards the PS3 only because of the ability to do 1080p Blu-Ray and upscale. My PS2 is currently my DVD player and it'd be nice to have a unit that can play my PS2 games. I've been reading though that the PS3 is harder to program for compared to Xbox 360 so multi-platform games are running more smoothly on the Xbox.

I wish I was a kid again and just had parents who bought things for me LOL

LOL You might want to read more about the programming for part. The games tend to run better on the system that they were designed on and then the system that gets the port gets the gimped duck.

Costco's policy is still intact for video games. The last change was for TV's.

I just bought 3 50" Pioneer 1080p's for my new house. I bet a PS2 would go nice with them...

Im still on the fence in spending the loot on a Blue-Ray. The A/V guy I have is stunned. I keep telling him, I'd rather pay $1,500 in HDMI cables than $1,400 in HD DVD players.

I'm just not a gamer. It doesn't appeal to me.

Yep, you're right. Here's what it says on their website:

"Merchandise: We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell with a full refund. Exceptions: Televisions, projectors, computers, cameras, camcorders, iPOD / MP3 players and cellular phones must be returned within 90 days of purchase for a refund"

Right now they have the 80 gb version at Costco. I wish Sony never took away the rumble. I could care less about tilt and turning with my controller. It would have made my decision much easier.

Here is the trick:

Costco still wants 700 for the PS3.

I read you can buy it for $540 via random sites with coupons. For $160, do you worry about someones parents returning the device? Or take the $160 and buy 3 games?

Take a look at what's in the box for that price. There's a game or two, an extra controller and the BR remote. There's also a killer warranty!
