Here is the trick:

Costco still wants 700 for the PS3.

I read you can buy it for $540 via random sites with coupons. For $160, do you worry about someones parents returning the device? Or take the $160 and buy 3 games?

With the way kids play games without resting and how they treat their games and systems, I'd rather pay the extra amount in the case that the system overheats, dies, etc. If you were to go to Best Buy or Circuit City, you'll probably end up paying a similar amount after you pay for their extended warranty. Costco's return policy is about as easy and hassle-free as it gets.

That place sells cables cheap cables for sure.

I dont even want to think about what I paid for the cabling in my joint. Cat 6e, HDMI, 2000mhz coax, 16g plenum rated audio. The trick is, I cant do the work myself this time, I have to work, Q4 is jumping. My last crib, I took off a month and played with the house. Kind of like detailing, sometimes you just gotta pay.

SpoiledMan, how is PS3's online network? Do you think it will take off this time compared to the last?

So far there hasn't been any game on the PS3 that makes me want to go out and spend the cash on an expensive system. I've come to the conclusion that I'm just old now (27) because I don't know half the games or half the bands the kids nowadays know about.

I'm still hoping for a version of Street Figher 2 Turbo/Hyper vs online players. Arcades just

aren't the same any more. I remember the good ol' days of putting your quarter on the machine's glass and waiting your turn to whoop @$$. It's sad that all the games the kids play at home are more high tech than what the arcades have.

The game library for the Xbox is much larger than that of the PS3. Much more opportunity to find games that will appeal to more members of the family. I voted Xbox, but everyone that I've ever spoken to that's played the Wii has totally loved it - gamers and non-gamers alike. I would get the Wii for my kids, but if I were buying for me, I'd get an Xbox.

Games ported from one system to another aren't always compromised unless you're talking about going from console to PC and vice versa. Those almost always suck on the ported platform.

Online is growing and will be *much* better than with PS2. Hell, it already is much better than before.

You might need to check out some of the games that are coming in just a few weeks. At the same period in the 360's life it was a little starved for games as well. EA is still sleeping on the job in the dual platform games but the first and second party games are at least very good. We have Warhawk, Motorstorm and Resistance. My Ratchet & Clank is already paid for and Call of Duty 4 will be secured on Monday.

Our Wii collects dust....... I guess you can say that this family finds it to be gimmicky.

I would seriously consider the Wii, simply because of the age of your kids. I have an Xbox and an Xbox 360 and I believe Microsoft was trying to cater to an entirely different audience with this new console. Honestly, the majority of my favorite games on the 360 are quite mature in content and I would not want a kid that age to be playing those yet. I am not sure of your personal feelings and I am not trying to convince you one way or another, I just wanted to warn you of this fact beforehand. Basically, check out the two game aisles and see which console has more what suits your family.

i can chime in on the ring of death . Costco did not let me return my xbox i had to send it of to Microsoft. took about 3 weeks. but the sent back "1 free month of Live" card to replace the month of Purgatory i was in without it.

not sure if costco denied the return because MS has formally announced that the were accepting all warranty claims for three years(instead of 90 days) and returning money to those who paid for the service earlier in the year

I have spent a ton of time on all of the "Next Gen Systems" One of my good buddies has a PS3 and I have a 360 and a Wii. I spent months deciding which system to get myself.

For me I love the 360. All the kids in High School had xbox's for the xbox live, and that still lives on now after college. I can play with my friends in different states, and not just competitively, i can play a game co-op and then when my buddy needs to run he just drops out and i keep playing alone. All the while we can chat and shoot for achievements (which rock) etc...

Also, the 360 streams HD video from my laptop, downloads demos, has cheap but fun minigames, downloads tv shows, has the add on HD-DVD, and is just plain sick at multimedia. You just install the latest media player on your pc, then the 360 finds it and you can play your favorite PC music in your game.

Another plus for the 360 is that it has the best controller by far.

The wii is a joke, we only use it at parties, I bought it for the wife.

The ps3 has killer video, and does not require a monthly fee for the live service, but it's pretty rare that it works well anyway, and it does not come with headsets. As far as it having blue ray, I download most of my movies anyway, then I stream them to my tv. Or i buy them in HD on the xbox. Also, the PS3 does not have gears of war, halo, bioshock, etc. Which are pretty mush the games of this year and last.

Man, even Costco is sick of getting those back...

You know, I leave my 360 in a well ventilated space standing vertically, and i have never had a problem. My friends who keep them stacked like an amp have gotten the red ring.

Just anecdotal, but maybe there is something to it?

From reading other forums it seems that it doesn't matter. It's the luck of the draw.

I'm not familiar with what Xbox's problems are (I'm assuming overheating?) so if that's the case, standing it up seams to make sense because technically you have about 2x the surface area to help cool off.

On another note, I was reading in EGM that they've heard rumors that the best parts are going into the 360 Elite, sorta like how the computer industry works with the quality of some of the components.

From what I was reading the Elite version of the XBOX has better cooling, different disc drive etc... Plus the Elite version has the HDMI and 1080P, if that matters. Up till a week ago I didn't know there was different versions of the XBOX 360.

Yeah, I'm going to pick up a 360 Elite. I think the PS3 is a good machine, but will wait for the price to drop significantly before picking one up.

Do you know what kind of games they would enjoy?

Like someone said, the Wii, while I think laughed at by more hardcore gamers, might be fun for them to play and the titles aren't really as intense as the ones available for PS3 or the 360. Me personally, will probably look at the Wii if they put out a good Star Wars game for it. The controller would be great for some lightsaber action :woot2:

The 360, right now, is the most popular system and has the larger video game library at the moment. That is, 360 original titles. If you count backward compatibility, the PS3 probably would get that medal.

Multiplayer is a big thing now. It wasn't when I was gaming, and I really don't care too much to play online. That being said, they might want to play their friends or other people on XBOX Live. Now, this is where a lot of crap comes into play. It varies from game to game, but they can be verbally assaulted from racial epitaphs, sexist crap, to being exposed to nudity. That seems to be a favorite when playing Uno online. I don't know why...

Will they be exposed to anything that they wouldn't be on the schoolyard? I doubt it. But just so you know what is going on online so their parents won't go off on ya.

Then there's the way Microsoft nickel and dime you for just about every little thing on their online service. This is where they make their money. Microsoft knows who their target audience is, so if they have disposable cash. They'll be throwing a lot of it away. :) Also, once you enter your credit card info to buy anything online, you can't delete it. They have it for life. I still don't understand that. I pick up a pre-paid card at a local GameStop and use that to buy anything that I'd want to get so I don't have to add my CC number.

As mentioned, people have been experiencing many problems with their 360's. But I don't know if it's just a case of the person who yells the loudest, but it seems like there might be a widespread problem that seems to be from overheating, but there could be other issues as well. Some people's machines failed when turning them on after having just received their "fixed" machine.

I'm a casual gamer and don't really play it much and not for hours on end when I do, so mine might not get as abused as others. It's also well ventilated. Also, customer service seems to be a nightmare.

Having said all that, I still enjoy my 360 and have been fortunate to not experience any mechanical problems. I'm not up too much on the PS3. I know spec wise, I believe it's the better machine, but a system is only as good as the games for it. But I hear that next year might be their year. Didn't hear any specific detail as to why, however. But I don't think it'll make people shun their 360's. The PS3 just needs more popular titles. What I've seen doesn't really move me, personally. And that price tag is out of my reach.

I'd like to get them the Wii, seems for child friendly. The parents think they want a PS3 or Xbox 360.

Ill buy both, let them pick which one they want to keep, and return the other.

Or I can give them one, hide the other in the car. If they like the one I gave them, let them keep it. If they say they would have preferred a XYZ, go to the car and get it for them

Get ready for the tears on X-mas eve.....
