I'd like to get them the Wii, seems for child friendly. The parents think they want a PS3 or Xbox 360.

Ill buy both, let them pick which one they want to keep, and return the other.

Or I can give them one, hide the other in the car. If they like the one I gave them, let them keep it. If they say they would have preferred a XYZ, go to the car and get it for them

Get ready for the tears on X-mas eve.....

Their parents are probably right. I'm sure they've been given subtle hints as kids do. ;)

Be careful though, they might insist on wanting both. Ha!

I can imagine the look on their faces if they say they'd rather have XYZ and you just happen to surprise them with the other one in the car. Of course, that'd be pretty bold of them to say they'd rather have something else in the first place. I know I wouldn't have been able to pull that off when I was a kid!

I couldn't agree with you more :)

Actually I find myself playing more games on the PC than I do any console these days, if I had to pick a console it would most likely be the PS3. We have a lot of money invested in Playstation games and really the only game that would attract me to the Xbox (MS piece of crap) is Halo3 and since it should be available on the PC I will most likely be going that route. I am planning on putting together my own gaming PC over the coming months and will most likely configure it to dual boot between Vista and Fedora Linux...

I got both systems. It all depends. PS3 is going to have some killer games coming out within the next year or so including Metal Gear, Assassin's Creed, Nba Live 08 or Nba 2k8. It's a tough one to say, but it sure is nice to have both units :) Motorstorm is a pretty cool game for PS3. Right now I have Halo 3 keeping me occupied until next week when the NBA games come out. :)

I'm looking forward to Assassin's Creed myself. Comes out in November. :bounce

Back in the 16-bit days, I had all the consoles too. Of course, they were a lot cheaper then, heh. I'd like to have the PS3 too just to have all bases covered...but I have a feeling most of the really good games (or the ones that will interest me more I should say) will be either cross platform or XBOX exclusives.

I'm one of the rare freaks that isn't really into Halo. The graphics really look great though. I might pick up Halo 3 once the price drops (might not be for a while) or get it used. Or most likely just end up renting it. Multiplayer doesn't really interest me and from what I heard the single player campaign is kind of short.

So, right now, I think it's AC, The Force Unleashed, which comes out next year and maybe GTA IV that are on my list. I'm pretty much a casual gamer.

Oh, and The Simpson's Game. Looks like you're playing an episode. I'm waiting to hear more about the gameplay though.

My concern is when they go to school and other kids have xbox 360, or more have the PS3? I dont want to waste the gift.

It doesn't matter what other kids have, if they have Xbox360 it would be a welcoming change to play the PS3 at their friends house or vice versa. Me and my friends always had different gaming systems so we could hook em all up when we got together.

My vote is for the Xbox360...I had one and loved it!

Where is the option for BOTH??? If I can only choose one, I would choose the PS3 because it doubles as an excellent BlueRay player, but I would definitely own both if I could. The XBox 360 Elite comes with Halo3 now (which is my all time favorite game), and you can also buy a separate device to play HD DVD.

Basically, if you buy both machines, you end up with a very versatile gaming and media player.

I voted Xbox 360. The ps3 was so dissappointing upon release, combined with the lack of good games(heck, lack of games period). I really enjoy playing Halo 3 and Forza 2 at the moment.

Xmas came and my birthday came so I'm actually able to buy a PS3 now, except Sony can't make up their freakin' mind about what they want to do. I was going to buy the 80gb model but now that those models have been taken off the shelves, I'm not going to waste my money on a basic 40 gb model with no DualShock 3 (rumble) and no backward compatibility. I have a feeling they're purposely not announcing what their plans are in order to get rid of excess 40 gb models, which reportedly didn't sell as well as the 80 gb model.

If Sony doesn't get their act together I'm just going to forget about the PS3 and spend my money on something more worthwhile, like a new computer or a d-slr. I don't know why I put up with so much Sony crap. If it was any other company, I would just give my business to another competitor but somehow I keep coming back to Sony even after being frustrated many times with all their proprietary crap.

Sony is like that lover that you know isn't right for you and that you shouldn't be with but somehow you always end up hooking back up because she's hot and she's good in bed, but it won't be long before you're tired of all the drama and issues that comes along with it.

They sold out of 80G models. I'd imagine that it wont be restocked until April 15th with the Dualshock3 controller. Same day as GT5 Prologue and GTA.

Well, I finally bit the bullet and opened up the Wii system I've had sitting around the house for more than 3 months still in its original Costco bundle. As of this very moment, I'm waiting for the Wii to update it's firmware. Sony just lost another customer with all the games they're playing, no pun intended.

I'm not going to sit around until June just for another 80gb system bundled with MGS4 to come up. Who knows if they'll include backwards compatibility in it, which for me was a big selling point as I could get rid of my old PS2. My main reason for wanting a PS3 was for Rock Band, SingStar (if and whenever it gets released in the U.S.), GT5, and GTA4.

So here's how I talked myself out of it:

1) Rock Band - Already had the game, but without a system it was pointless. Plus, it's more than half the cost of the Wii itself, just for ONE game. Who knows how much downloadable content there'll be? If the Karaoke Revolution series tells me anything about Harmonix, it's that they'd rather sell me a new game (that's no different from the previous besides song selection) instead of making money from extra, downloadable content.

2) SingStar - I'm a bigger fan of the Karaoke Revolution series, but considering they have a SingStar store, this game seemed to have more potential. While it's out already in other countries, it's not released yet here in the States.

3) GT5 - Sorry, but I'm not going to pay $35 for a game that's supposed to hold me over until the real one comes out. If GT5 Prologue hasn't even been released yet, when the hell will GT5 actually ever get here?

4) Grand Theft Auto 4 - I had the original GTA3 version on PC before most people even knew about the series, but I never really got into the game. Not that it was a bad game, but with such an open world, whenever I play GTA I find myself just killing cops and seeing how many stars I can rack up. I always get distracted from the core game itself. I'll probably do the same thing in GTAIV. I guess that's the A.D.D. in me?

As far as the Wii is concerned, I always thought of it was a kiddie system and for me, I always considered the N64 to be a big disappointment, despite Mario 64 being my favorite game of all time. I could have opened up the system at any time but I made up my mind that I would enjoy a PS3 more than the Wii so I was just going to eBay the system. The deciding factor for me came down to a few different reasons.

1) PS3 unavailability - The reason for the 80gb PS3 not selling as well as a 40gb system seems like BULL to me. I personally think Sony is just trying to unload a bunch of 40gb systems that didn't sell. If your only choice to pick was one model and you had to have a PS3, then you're stuck buying the model they want you to buy.

2) Games - I had already previously purchased Mario Galaxy and then Mario Bros. Brawl came out. I'm not a hardcore gamer anymore so these games actually sound fun, not only for me but for my wife and the rest of the family. The games that gets the most play on my PS2 games at the moment are the party games.

3) My father-in-law - He turned 80 this past Oct. and unfortunately within the last year, his health (physically and mentally) has taken a turn for the worse. He does nothing but sit in his recliner and watch Law and Order ALL day long. It's a Catch 22. He can barely walk, so he has no energy to walk out to get the paper, go sit in the kitchen, and do his crosswords. So the only thing he can do is watch TV, but now his muscles have gone into atrophy because he's too weak to work out and all the mindless tv watching only makes the symptoms of dementia only worse.

We know he gets bored from watching TV, but he can't do much else on his own. I think he might find a little enjoyment from the Wii, while getting a slight workout. It may not seem like a workout to you or me, but at his age and his health, any movement is probably better than nothing.

4) Price - Not only is the system cheaper, but the games are too. Blu-Ray movies are still too expensive for me to buy. Plus, my TV already upconverts to 1080p anyway, I can't imagine the PS3 doing significantly better at upconverting standard DVDs.

Anyway, sorry for the long post but I was so willing to give my money to Sony only to be disappointed by them. Time to go try out my Wii now :)

I have a Denon HD up converter (entry level model) and a 80gig PS3 and I can tell you an up converter is o.k (Denon is a great player too) but doesn't hold a candle to true Hi def. It is night and day difference from up converting to true hi def. I wouldn't have imaged such a dramatic difference to be honest. But the free 5 blue ray movies that were used as a rebate showed up and I was amazed at the quality of the picture (32'' Samsung flat/LCD 720p). If you think up converted movies look good Blue Ray (true hi def in general) WILL amaze you. The movie Sword Fish with the intense colors looks amazing in Blue Ray.

My PS3 won't read discs anymore. I've had it since December 30th and this weekend it stopped reading discs. I've tried PS3 games, Blu-ray and regular DVD's. I'm not real happy about this. I did some looking online and looks like it happens. So now I have to call Sony and send in mine and they will send me refurbished one. If I wanted a refurbished one I would have bought it in the first place and saved some money. I'm not really a hardcore gamer so I don't even have many hours on it. Grrrrr! Sorry for the rant. I used my American Express card to buy it and am almost thinking of just asking for my money back for now. It's the 120gb model.
