Since I was pretty harsh about the quote from the "detailing pro" in the intial post, *and* since RacingBeat posted the direct quote from David B. who was apparently the individual in question
I'm gonna say that:
- I don't interpret David's comment about restoring finish clarity to mean that simply claying the surface will restore a carnauba-like shine, at least not in the general sense of the average owner of the average car on the road. Without the stipulation that it's David, posting about a purchased-new (and well looked after) Porsche, and directing his comments at this particular audience, the idea loses context. IMO that hypothetical average person simply cannot give up waxing/etc. and get by with just clay.
-If he *did* intend to say that he doesn't need a LSP on his Cayenne then the paint on it is radically different from any vehicle I've ever worked on, including my Audis and the Porsches I've owned, *or* he and I are thinking of different criteria with regard to how a vehicle should look. The vehicles I'm familiar with simply do not look acceptable to me after merely claying (and the S8 lives a very pampered existence) and for that matter they don't look acceptable *to me* with just any LSP. And without a LSP on them, they are not protected from [everything] and their finishes are not slick enough to shed contamination.
I gotta think this is some weird example of misinterpretation, a lack of context, or a case of radically different circumstances or criteria, as I'd be *very* surprised if David and I are in such extreme disagreement. And if we are, well, it wouldn't be the first time that either of us has agreed to disagree.
But at any rate- I'll hereby post my apology for the "amusing or stupid" remark I posted and for questioning the expertise of our Mayor, for whom I have nothing but respect. Sheesh, you'd think I'd know enough not to shoot my mouth off like that regardless of the circumstances anyhow
Such talk is the sort of thing that *I* usually find offensive.
