How many of you "speed demons" have had any high speed driver training? Just make sure you donor card is up to date. Don't forget the roads were never designed for those velocities, neither the corners or the [smooth-ness] surfacing standards, if they exist at all.

I own a F150 Lightning and drive the posted speed on the public roads and save the high speed stuff for those venues where it is appropriate.

 I own a Lightning too and I dont know many L owners that drive the speed limit.. its just too darned hard.. are you a member of HALO?

I have an '03 20th Anniversary VW GTI.

I have taken it to 121 mph and have cruised at 100 on the turnpike for about 10 to 15 mins at a time. It is just too enjoyable to me.

I drive 70 - 80 in most places anyways and gas mileage isn't that big of a deal (25 to 28 mpg)

It's just that with the 6 speed and turbo I want to use it as much as possible and enjoy driving it at high speeds. Unlike some cars, at 100 mph it feels quite civil and there is not too much noise or ride harshness and it feels comfortable (and of course quick).

Also, I would probably get on the highway by getting up to the limiter (131) and then cruise back down.

I am careful (and weary) of traffic however, and would probably just cruise at 80-90 in most cases.

There's nothing like hitting the onramp, being sent backwards into your seat, and watching the tach hit the redline, shift, feel the tires scramble for traction, and realize I still have 3 gears left!!

One of my friends drove it, he just went into fourth, and I said you're at 95! He looked at me in disbelief and smiled. He then looked at the speedometer and his eyes openned and he said "oh crap, your're right".

Not a big fan of street racing though, keep the streets safe....

My Ranger is comfortable between 80 and 85, on smooth flat surface. Anything over 85 and it starts to shake and scream. It has trouble just getting over 90 on flat roads. If I keep the hammer down long enough I can get it up to 98mph, but not 1mph more!!! by that time it's screaming 5000RPM in OD. So yea I'd say jammin at 80-85 for several hrs, sounds good to me:up 91

i picked 66-70 due to my vehical and gearing....

i drive a 1997 ford f250 powerstroke diesel with 3.55 gears (the good mileage ones BAHAHAHHA)

at 70mph i get 20mpg on highway

at 71mph i get 15mpg on highway its that horrible and it only gets worse the faster i go

ive hit the rev limiter in 5th gear once on an open road once very stupid yes but i wanted to know what it would do

the spedo stops at about 90 but i was only at about 2700 rpms with a redline of 3600 :) dunno how fast it went but it if i had a spoiler like the ricers i woulda went to the moon

anyways dropping the tailgate is a BAD idea for HIGH speeds the bed of a truck puts downforce on the rearend due to wind

the wind comes up over the cab and drops into the bed pushing down with no downforce on the rear things will get wild

the fastest ive gone is 145 in a 350z on a TESTDRIVE :) gahh that was the funnest thing ever the woman next to me was telling me to go faster but i ran out of room on the road before i decided to safely back off (i found out the hard way those motors are pretty durable....i redlined 3rd and misshifted into 2nd at with a powershift) it just locked the tires for a second then i mashed the clutch back in drove off like nothing happend i was very impressed

all in all when i drove my v6 accord id cruise at about 100

on the motorcycle sometimes ill take it up to 120 but only for SHORT times because its bad enough on 2 wheels with idiots on the street

I've never gone above 95 in my Formula, and yes, it's pretty quick. Not fast in the grand scheme of things, but fast compared to 99.6% of other cars on the road (324rwhp/340rwtq.)

I don't see the point in speeding. If there were no consequence I might be tempted to try something out, but that's a scenario that'll never happen. As is, I don't care enough to risk losing my license, insurance, having my insurance jacked up a ton, or losing the entire car itself.

I voted last year, but never chimed in :(.

I'll have to say around 100 in the teg. Given that we implement "Drive Right" from the Autobahn and everyone actually obeys it. Anything past 100 is a bit much, since afterall, it's not a Bimmer or anything ;).

If there were no speed limit AND no other cars on the road I would peg the speedo. Otherwise I would have to say my speed would have to depend on the conditions and the traffic.

I liked hitting the cruise control in the SS at 120, purrrrrrrrrrr's right along:shocked

My Military days in Germany.. 130 wasnt fast enough for some of those Mercedes tanks that wanted me to move to the right so they could pass.:argue

Glad someone revided this thread! :up

The Astra feels in its element going at 170 (km/hr, so don't faint)..... That is close to 105 mph. However, most of the times I will just go with the flow at 120 km/hr (aprox 72 mph).

The absolutely best road to drive at those speeds is the "autopista del sol" from Mexico City to Acapulco. Very expensive toll highway, but a joy to drive. The autopista Mexico - Toluca also allows some fast driving, but going uphill and downhill with some twists is challenging, and we have accident quite often. As the others mentioned, the road and the traffic flow are key factors..... Now move to right and let me pass!!!!

Alex :p

High speeds are fine and dandy assuming people have vehicles designed for them, the proper tires, proper inflation, complete concentration, the required visibility and traction, and the needed driving skills. Problem is many people do not have at least several of those necessities.

What is the saying? Something like most drivers think they are good, safe drivers? Hah. Too much confidence is as dangerous as too little.

I'd probably go 110mph. I've driven my folk's BMW 325 at that speed. The feeling of control, security, tightness and responsiveness was fantastic.

I'ven been in a Mustang GT with speedometer buried beyond the top speed. That was pretty hairy.

It all depends on the vehicle and tires for me.

Quickest I've gone on the public highway here in the UK is 170mph in my BMW M3 CSL. It was 3am and I was the only car on the road. I was trying to get it to vMax (at about 187 we think - I had a factory de-limited car) but a lorry decided to pull out and leave me with only one lane to play with and that's when I decided enough was enough!

I wouldn't ever dream of doing this speed when other people wre around, and I get really annoyed when I see people trying to do so.

Ben

Well. I'd say anywhere between 90 and 120. I've had my car somewhere up around 160 before and it hugged the road perfectly... then slowed down to 40 just as smoothly. I have heard I should be able to push 170, but I backed off before then.

Edit: Snowy or rainy conditions I don't drive above 75... the back end comming out on my car scares me a bit.
