If there were no speed limits on the interstate highways...

How fast would you drive on the freeway if there was no limit?

My 350Z is very comfortable in the 100-120 range; I've had it above 140 but backed it off - more scared of going to jail or running into something unexpected than the car telling me to back off.

Untill recently I drove in the region of 30k miles a year....most of which were @ 90 MPH +. in a 'eurobox', just point and squirt.

With my 'Weekend car' I have hit 145, but would be happy @ 110MPH. The thing you have to be aware of is all the other road users, they have rights too!

My cruising speed tends to be about 5-10mph above the flow of traffic. That is about 85-90mph under ideal conditions. Also, my mileage is about 18mpg at that speed. Not great, but I've stopped caring about mileage a long time ago. It always sucks. In the rain, I slow down a lot. I become the slower guy and chill in the right lanes. My truck has terrible traction in the rain, and I've spun out one too many times on off ramps.

well i have had the pleasure of cruising legally in the US @ over 100 MPH in my home state on Montana. For the 3.5 years or so that they had only a "reasonable and prudent" limit it was GREAT.

my Eclipse GT has a complete suspension and upgraded braking components and cruises @ 110 very, very comfortably! i have had it up to 150 on some nice long stretches of road for about 10-15 minute intervals as well. Now i reside currently in socal, and the traffic on a good late night seems to hover around 85-95 mph. As far as MPG's are concerned, i get about 26 when i keep it under 90, over that and it drops to about 21-22 or so.

um, did the whole page 1 get posted as page 3 for anyone else?

Anyway, around here I'd only drive about 60-65 on I-495 because the road has a lot of traffic, a lot of idiots, and a lot of barriered, slightly hilly curves where it can be difficult to see very far ahead. But I doubt I'd regularly drive more than about 80 even in much better conditions. 75-80 I can still get 25+ mpg. But cruising around at 90-100 or greater, I really don't think I'd do that much. Maybe on occassion only under the right conditions. The brakes on the 'Roara are pretty great, but I'd probably want to step the fronts up from 12's to 13's and maybe the backs up by 1/2-1" if I were gonna regularly drive 90+. But really, the mileage would just suck...

The new Aurora is limited around 136 I believe. The classic Aurora (with the Autobahn package) came with V-rated tires and 200 extra pounds, whereas mine comes with H-rated tires. I think the lower rated tires but also the less weight explains the 3 mph slower limiter. I've had it up to about 125, and it is extremely stable and was pulling strong. It's really a very solid, confident chasis, and the steering is nicely weighted with good feel. I find the handling of the new Aurora is impressive, especially when you factor in the comfortable ride. Though, I'm admittedly partial to Auroras... :D

I have easily done 125 in my dad's Vette on an empty highway. I just go with it, I can feel the car around me. I have actually found that I pay better attention to my driving the faster that I go, because I do not get bored, I stay intrested. Its kinda hard to explain the whole feeling.

Driving from France thro Belgium to Northern Germany usually as fast as he car will go. In this case a VW Passat Est. @125mph. There are speed limits but no police. Even at these speeds I get overtaken quite often esp. in Germany where stretches of the Autobahn have no limits.

Other drivers expect cars to be going this fast so while not exactly safe not as dangerous as it could be.

In the US the fasest I have driven was back fom Vegas to San Diego where I hit 123mph (basically as it was a digital speedo and we wanted to see the numbers on the dial)

I like to just cruise the speed limit or 5 over on the highway usually, 80 mph on long trips. Makes me look more badass, seeing an 18 yr. old driving a Steeda Mustang at the speed limit?! lets people know that you don't have to prove you're a 13 second car by driving like a dumbass :p If there were no speed limits though, I'm not sure what speed I'd like. The Steeda race wing really makes it stick to the road at high speed, plus suspension and tires. I think the 110-120 range would be fine. It's electronically limited to 155mph however.

I've driven the Autobahns in Germany in a Benz C-Class and my typical cruising speed on the stretches where there was no limit was 100-110 mph. I hit 130 briefly, but only for a moment. That is too fast even for the autobahn. In the US though, probably 85-90, depending on the car and traffic conditions. And truthfully, that's about the average speed on SoCal freeways these days anyway. I used to do that in the Grand Cherokee.

take a trip to Germany and drive the autobahn! While us car enthusiasts would know where the comfort zone is for interstate driving, some goofball (male/female) would inevitably drive by, cell phone stuck in ear, steering with knee, taking notes. Unless the states make the driving requirements something more than a parallel park test & go around the block...we're better off with the current limits.

Whew!...got that one off the chest early this am! :shocked

I usually drive 80mph on the highway, and I'm not in the ludicrous-speed lane. Those peeps go 90+.

On my bike I go 85-90mph because I'm usually in the ludicrous-speed lane :).

I go 90-110 in my jeep now on highways when ever possible so you bet i would if it was legal, i wouldnt exceed too high of speeds like 120 if i was in sports car since im not looking for an fatal accident

How many of you "speed demons" have had any high speed driver training? Just make sure you donor card is up to date. Don't forget the roads were never designed for those velocities, neither the corners or the [smooth-ness] surfacing standards, if they exist at all.

I own a F150 Lightning and drive the posted speed on the public roads and save the high speed stuff for those venues where it is appropriate.

Depends on road conditions completely. Rush hour on the motorway into work you're lucky to get above 50 anyway but clear motorway and good weather conditions usually around 100 and I still get around 45 mpg (6 speed box and a turbo diesel engine).

On a good trunk road I'd drive maybe a little slower but again entirely dependent on conditions and traffic flow.

Fastest ever on the road? Got the speedo on an Escort Cosworth off the end stop (160mph) and on the track I've driven to around 170 in a 355 and been driven at close to 190 in a client's F50 around Silverstone.

Obviously one should drive at a safe speed, which depends on many factors. On a wide open modern roadway I think my Z06 Corvette is safe at any speed. Mileage seems to be best at about 80-90 mph. which is about 1800 to 2000 RPM. Gets about 29-30 mpg. at those speeds. I have also driven cars like Cadillac, etc. and was scared to go much above 70.

I once got a ticket for doing 60 in my 356 Porsche on a new(ish)highway that was still marked for 80. That was in 1974 when the feds mandated 55 everywhere-- boy was *that* frustrating.

~One man’s opinion~

On an Autobahn where there are drivers experienced in high-speed driving, with cars to match and that relate speed to road conditions and visibility 100mph +

Experience unshared; is knowledge wasted…/
