76-80 for me. I've slowed down a lot over the years. Took a trip to CO Springs a while back, cruise control at 95-100 most of the way. Sometimes I get impatient on long trips. :D

When we were in Scottsdale last December, we drove through the desert to San Diego at 115mph (all the faster the rental car would go) pretty much the entire way. I loved it! They're nuts in Scottsdale though! We were going 80 (the speed limit I believe was 65) and everyone was still passing us left and right! It was fun :-) I miss it.

I don't think it's really the speed that gets people into accidents, it's the people going slower than the speed limit (why are there 'minimums' anyways?) that cause accidents because they get in the way and cause disruption from not keeping up with traffic. If it's not accidents they cause, it sure is road rage!

I'd cruise in the 95-100 range. My GT hit a limiter at 107, so until I get a new PCM, I stop there. The car is quite comfy in that range with little noise and float. Of course, if I were to cruise at spped for a long time, I would upgrade my suspension and tires just to be on the safe side.

I usually cruise at about 78-80 in the 65 mph zones when I feel it is safe to do so. Otherwise, I usually keep pace with the faster traffic.

Of course, 95% of my body weight is in my right foot, so that has an effect as well.

Depending on congestion, I like to hum along in my Jetta VR6 at 90 - 95 mph. With the sport suspension and low profile ultra high performance rubber, I feel 100% secure and confident. The tach is around 3500 - 4000 rpm and I get roughly 23mpg according to the little trip computer. Its fun to weave around at those speeds; again, depending on congestion.

Normal driving, I stay around 75mph (10 above the 65 limit).

I took delivery of a 2002 Porsche C2 last june in Germany and then drove it for two weeks all around germany. (1400 miles) I found that must all the traffic was around 80 to 85 mph. There were the big bmw's and mecr that would cruise in the triple digits but not very many. I did how ever see 140 for a short time. It is very tiring for very long, and at $4 a gallon is spendy.

I'd have to agree. The Aurora is like a fast cloud at any speed, but she really hits a groove at about 90. My limiter is at 139, and my tires are certainly capable of that, but I've never gotten much past 110, and that was a passing situation...not cruising.

I would say driving conditions permitting I like about 120. I have had the Maxima up to 141 and between 100-120 it just feels unstable but when I hit 120 it just hugs the road but over 125 it feels as though I am going to take off lol. But even with the speed limit at 75 I find that right around 90mph is where I set the crusie. That way if the radar jammer doesnt work I wont go to jail for 15 over.

Mmmmmm, sounds tasty!! :p

I've had both my current cars to 140+ and the WRX feels alot more solid up there than the 2. The front end is light on a mid-engined car.

I'm usually doing 10-15 over the speed limits anyway, so say 75-85 normally, only thing keeping me that low is the cops.

On long road trips, many times I've set the cruise at 100 or more. The trip guys by so much faster! Once I cut my normal 7 hour drive to a 5 hour one. :xyxthumbs

So, if there were no limits, traffic permitting, it would always be triple digits.

If it were a short 10 mile trip, or maybe just to Moorehead, I try to hit 160 once by the time I got there if the traffic is very light. On a long road trip, I would probably do 80.

I find that both of my trucks are comfortable at any speed below 100 MPH. I say this because I have never had either one of them above 100 MPH. On the interstate, depending on the road conditions I feel most comfortable when driving around 80 MPH.

Given the proper conditions, and with drivers who actually understood the rules of the road, I'd have no problem with 90 - 100 mph.

On trips to WI, we set the cruise at about 90 and go. We get about 350 miles to a tank, and by going 90 instead of 70 we "make" around 2.5 hours on the trip. Round trip, it's a 5 hr savings, which is huge when you're driving 1500 miles round trip.

The GTI is a little twitchy above 120, but the BMW was a dream at those speeds. With my bikes, well, um, let's put it this way...

1999 - Washington DC to Wisconsin = 930 miles.

Time to complete trip: 10 hours, 4 minutes.

1997 YZF1000, 4.5gal fuel tank, Dainese Safety-Pro suit, Knox back protector, Daytona boots, Kushitani Gloves, Arai Helmet and Camel-Pack hydration system.

I've yet to beat that time.

Steve- I did the 932 miles to my ex-wife's this summer (normally around 970 miles, but I spent the night at my brother's who lived about 40 miles east of me and kept me from having to deal with Dallas' morning rush hour) and it took me just over 13 hours. Not bad for a 1990 Accord!

145. Because, thats where my speedo stops.

Granted, I only get about 5-6mpg at 5500rpm.

But you only get that kind of gas mileage on 45, 610 or 59 at rush hour anyway.. :rofl

sorry, I lived in Houston for 35 yrs and just couldnt resist.. although I have done triple figures on all three of those hwys at one time or another... :shocked

My truck seems to run very well for long periods of time at just under 100, havent had the opportunity to try it above 100 for extended periods of time.. but now that I have acquired a Valentine One and a laser jammer.. who knows? I may have to revise my answer:cool:

I think most cars today can easily do the 80+ for long distances..

just my .02

I drive 65-70 through B'ham, 80-85 on the highways. Open stretches with no traffic it's all WOT.

135-140, because my 11 year ES 300 can... Very floaty, and Only an idiot would feel safe cornering. Atleast it dosen't get upset when you fly over a pothole though. hmmm

Some parts on some highways in Alabama, you simply don't get pulled over doing 85. Mostly around Birmingham. 459(beware of Hoover, Homewood and Trussville police. Slow down under 80 around any construction.

Not uncommon to see almost half the cars on 20/59 South going to Tuscaloosa doing 85-90. You most definately don't do 80 in that lane or you'll get run over.

*Be advised of 55mph road construction both ways, and OBEY IT*

Also be extreamly careful on I20 Brimingham-Atlanta. 80+ mph speeds and no divider. *Extreme* amount of deadly wrecks, all of which are very fatal as 160mph closing speeds do not turn out well.

Speed limit just dropped from 70-60 so be forewarned 85 is an automatic WR ticket. That's not the highway for fast speeds either. It's all open, with no divider as I said before. Also many parts have strong wind gusts during daylight hours.

AHP also now has unmarked cars heavily patrolling I20 throughout Jefforson County going both ways(to and from)

Guys I'd like to close with the points that will absilutely save your life if you like speed...

Speed kills. If you don't feel safe driving a certian speed, don't do it.

NEVER EVER TRAVEL AT HIGH SPEED IN PACKS. I posted on another forum and got an arguement. Two weeks later I'm proven very correctly as one car pulls in front of 4 friends racing. One car totalled another with damage. Subtract two forum members.

ALWAYS LEAVE SEVERAL HUNDRED FEET of distance to stop. Unless your *** has a drag chute on it, you need to slow your *** down closing on people.

ALWAYS ASSUME THEY NEVER SEE YOU.

ALWAYS ASSUME THE NEXT CAR WILL PULL OUT INFRONT OF YOU.

DO NOT EVER UNDER ANY CIRCOMSTANCE DRIVE LIKE AN AGGRESSIVE *******. The only thing worse than speeding and a guy cutting you off before you can hit your brakes, is driving like a complete ******* and causing a large wreck. Keep the innoccent people's risk to a bare minimum please.

It's that simple.

hey dboat, let your tailgate down the air only catches the very top of it(draft just slips over the back once you get fast enough)

That will improve your top end. One of my friends got an '02 F150 with a V8 in it. (Sorry I know nothing about it) He tops out 110-115 on the highway and Accelerates as well as my ES, actually slightly quicker when he dose everything right.

No than an ES is any benchmark. I'm just saying... Your truck should be good over 100, just watch the handling carefully

Thanks, but I have a hard tonneau and I think that it would work better to keep the tonneau on and the tailgate closed.. My truck will do a governed 150 mph... its a supercharged V8 from the factory.. woo hoo... I like to cruise and cruise fast.. got my Valentine 1 radar detector and am getting laser jammer installed too..

Thanks for the advice...

toys, check out www.speedtrap.org

as fast as I can go, safely, within reason.

My ranger likes doing 80-85. If in a faster car that didnt have the aerodynamics of a brick, Id cruise at 110 or so.

In michigan, if you do anything less than 75, you'll get ran off the road.
