How many layers you sick puppies?

OK what's the most amount of layers you've applied to the same car. I'm talking #'s as well in what time frame and product. I'm ready to be impressed  and this board has been kinda slow lately.

3 coats of Zaino Z5 one day, 3 coats of Z2 the next, 3 more coats of Z2 the next day, all with a coat of Z6 in between....so yeah, that's alot of Zaino :D

I prefer to use products that work with only one layer. Wolfgang, Poorboys, Clearkote, Meguiars, ect. I really don't get the whole layering thing.

Me either Scottwax, the most I have done is with my car. New coat of bodyseal, then six - 24hours later 3M Premium Wax and followed by Malco Flash wax and or Pacer Rocket carnuba wax

But hey if layering works then fine. Just need a car for two days.

i don't understand the concept of layering, especially with zaino. i heard that it gets shinier with each layer. but does it make it last any longer? like for example 1 coat will last 6 months. will that extra 12 coats add another 12 plus months onto it?

cause all that work of waiting 24 hours between each coat or something. i don't think is very practical.

and as far as autopians, the wide variety i notice seem to wax at LEASTonce a month. and on their customer cars they use more durable products like #16 which needs like 1 coat or two and it's good for at least 3 months.

i don't know, just curious. im a newbie and still trying to learn everything.

You can do 3 coats every 24 hours, not one. I don't throw on 9 coats every time I zaino, I was just experimenting...usually I do 3 coats now and that's it. The thing about zaino is about you don't NEED to wax once a month because it lasts so long. #16 lasted about 3 weeks for me, but then again I'm in FL so anything's possible :angry

You must be thinking of Klasse, it isn't really that bad since it wipes on and wipes off. You can do the entire car in 20 minutes.

I think some products I use doesn't actually layer. It does look better though, I think it just the stuff mixing together and filling in the spots I missed or didn't put enough. Most I did was 2 and that was two day step.

I applied two coats of Amino UV 24 hours apart on a new auto that had never had anything used on it. The next application in several monnths will only be one coat. This product is very easy to apply and remove. The second coat seemed to bring out the shine more.

Two coats of SG about one week apart on my wifes car. That was about a month ago. I'm getting ready to wash it and put another coat of SG on it. I don't know if this is really considered layering or not. I think that SG is holding up very well, its been raining like abeast here. The car is outside 24/7

I really don't get the whole layering thing.
Scott, were sick puppies, you know that, somethings we just dont make common sense. Sometimes i think we just like to feel like were pampering our finish, because it makes us feel better. My honest opinion is it does give us a little additional protection, kind of like reapplying sunscreen.

Personally, i feel if a product is worthy of itself (and the asking price) it shouldnt need several applications, hence the desire to never ever use Zaino....(Why would i want to reapply a million coats if this stuff is so awesome >>>)

I have reapplied 2 coast of WG, and BF, and Plat, and Klasse.....Because i liked the way it felt ....Maybe thats the Z thing also...?

Since a complete buff-out at Thanksgiving (2003) AIO x 2, SG x 4, UPP x 4, with the SG and UPP in various layer combinations and SONUS QD at various points. It would have been LOTS more but most weekends my wife and I have been refurbishing a rent condo for sale since January.

For me it is therapy to help forget my regular paying job.

I know what you mean about the therapy part. It sure beats gardening and cutting grass.

Who cares about whether layering is a waste of time or not. I wanna hear from the obsessive compulsives out there who can't help themselves.

I am sure adding another layer of something will add additional protection and enhance the appearance provided it has been some time since the last application. I occassionally will do two layers of something (like UPP, based on forum recommendations) or to ensure complete coverage but overall, I apply one layer and move on.

EDIT If I was still married, I'd probably be layering like crazy, just to get away from her....yes, my marriage was that bad!

there is definetely a difference when nxt is layered. Haven't tried much else. Besides, waxing is a walk in the park compared to polishing/prepping.

hrmm that seems more reasonable, 3 coats in a day.

i got the wrong idea because i remember a friend of mine who owned a RSX used to use zaino and he said 24 hours between each coat for best results. or something like that.

zaino still seems to be the top notch stuff in shine and durability from what i read here.

as for me, i been using just OTC stuff and i would consider my car protected. but like any other sick puppies, i always waxed once a month or sometimes more to try a new product or just when im bored.

On customer's cars, unless they specify (and pay for) more, I work with 1 layer products as well. Right now, it's mostly WG and Poorboy's.

My daily driver is a different story. I tend to put on 'layers' whether it's needed or not. I don't really do it with the intention of getting X layers on the car. It's more like after about 2-3 weeks, I just like to refresh whatever I have on there.

My feeling is that some parts of the car (say the bottom half, especially near rocker panels) get a lot of abuse and doing another layer every 2-3 weeks will help refresh the more abused parts of the car. The less abused parts of the car may have almost all of the original top layer on there and I expect that any new layer I put on will just come right off when I wipe. So basically, I just put on a new layer to even things out again.

And like it is for some of us, it's therapy. :D To me, detailing is relaxing.

One of the things I tell the wife is that "doing" my car helps me to relax (but only if I don't hear someone keep saying: "Are you almost done," or "How much do you have left to do?")

I am one of those obsessive ones...I can easily (if allowed by time & the wife), put a coat (or more) a day of whatever product I'm 'into' at the time. During a long weekend, my car sat garaged for 3 days and got 6-10 coats (4 hours apart, then an overnight cure).

My wife has realised that "the other woman" is my car, and has threatened to file for Widow's Benefits.
