Collinite 476S vs. 845

i think that the general theory is that they are about the same. i have used 845 since 1973 on everything. it is so easy that i find it best to apply/remove by hand. you don't want to use too much product as it is a waist to do so. i always put two coats on to insure coverage waiting an hour or so between. i find it at most boating stores and marine paint supply house if you have any nearby. some buy online. that's my opinion, you asked. :xyxthumbs

by the way, i have owned white cars all my life (3 now) and i really like Collinite products on white. ;)

get both, the 476S paste will set you back only around $15 and one tin will last for a long, long time...

I use 476s and I find it fairly easy to use.

I can't compare it to 845 though.

I find it locally at Harbor Freight. I can't seem to find 845 locally. Hence the reason why I haven't compared them.

Its my experience that 476 will last longer than 845 but 845 is easier to use.

That's a very fair summary. I guess Fleetwax = 476S. I picked up this tin two weeks ago on Fleabay for $15 (incl ship). This tin is 12oz and may be larger than the tin of 476S.

Have the directions provided by Collinite changed? I used to let this stuff cure for 20 - 30 mins and you needed a belt sander to remove - - I sold my previous tin I was so discouraged with it. It was NOT worth the effort compared to the 845 which I use. This Fleetwax came off like a nice carnauba...no hassles whatsoever. I'm liking it!

I use 476 as a "base topper." (I use P21s over it after the normal washing, claying, buffing and polishing.) I like the price for an endurance wax. I just picked up 3 more tins at Harbor Freight as they will no longer carry Collinite wax. I paid $9.85/tin. I haven't used 845 but I'm sure it's just as good. 476 is very easy to apply and remove if you do 1 panel at a time. Hope that helps.

I have both products. I find both very easy to use. The 845 leaves even black finishes glowing (looking very warm), and very oily. It looks really good if your the type of person who likes the finish to look dripping wet. But no matter how may times i use it, and how many different ways i apply it, it still only lasts about a month or so, and then its gone. It doesn't offer much protection. The 476s is quite the opposite. It leaves a warm finish, but not as wet looking. The protection on the other hand is incredible. On my daily drive (95 Monte w/183000 miles) I applied a coat in April. Its been through acid rain, bird dropping on the paint for more than a week, and just general daily abuse. I drive the car on dirt roads during the week, and in the city on the weekend. The finish still beads as it did when I first put it on in April. It truly is a super coat.

Application is easy, wipe on, leave on for like 10-15 minutes, wipe off. If you can't get it off, bring it out into the sun for a couple of minutes. The wax will heat up and "melt." Bring the car back out of the sun, and wipe the rest off. If you still can't get it off, follow it up with QD.

Maybe a silly question, and slightly OT. But when using the paste wax and a DA, what is the most efficient way to get the paste from the tin onto the DA pad?

some use a butter knife or some sort of small spatula. i like to use 4" cyclo pads on the PC, as they fit right in and out of the tin...

I find that a credit card works great to kinda butter on wax onto a pad but you really only need to apply it by hand it'll probably go just as fast, at most use the machine to remove it.

I was at Harbor Freight the other day and they had the 476S on clearance, but not the 845. Are they dropping both or are they just keeping the 845?

it seems like HF is like big lots in a way, if you want something there you should buy it before they stop carrying it (remember they sell stuff for cheap as does BL's). they move stuff out that probably doesn't sell really well/quickly for them...

From what the manager told me (in MN), they won't be carrying any Collinite products anymore. I'm pretty sure that's not their niche market anyway.

is mac tec the best place to get it online? Also, it seems like the drying time is pretty inconsistant. How long should you leave it on the surface before buffing it off?
