3M IHG + Show Car wax

NickATRvtec, if you have some Autoglym Super Resin, use this as a base (after washing, claying etc) and top with your wax. The polymer gives protection and the wax a deep shine.

I have also found One Grand Glaze also works well with the Autoglym, topped with Blitz.

Steven

I dont know about your car but many of the spoilers are dealer add ons and painted at the dealer are by a local shop. I think you are right that the spoiler is not clear coated.

My rear spoiler was painted in the factory. I suspect they just used an elastisizer followed by a base coat. Seems to be common with stuff made from polyurethane. And as the paint comes of with 3m SMR (applied by hand) - that's why I'm reluctant to go at it again

The car is actually only 7 weeks old, has some minor swirls on the spoiler, boot area, rear quarter panels, and some on the roof. Most are visible in bright sunlight. Some only under bright street lights. They seem to be vertical or horizontal swirl marks - not spider webbing. I have treated the swirls as best I can with SMR by hand with some success. The ones I wasn't so successful with - I ended up making tiny swirl marks. So now all I want to do is cover these swirls and try to protect the polish with a wax.

I'll be tackling this job this weekend and only have limited products available to me.

I've decided to polish with P21S GEPC or 3M IHG. I already know what swirl filling abillities IHG has. How does GEPC compare.

It says on the bottle it removes minor swirls, so I take that to mean it just covers them. The only thing that concerns me, is that is says on the bottle it's for cars with a finish more then 6 months old, while 3m is for new or newly painted cars. I also considered Autoglym Super Resin. Does this do anything for swirl marks ?

And for waxing - as I don't have time to order Blitz or P21S, I'm gonna go with Dr. OK Wak Speed Wax. Is this a pure wax or does it contain any cleaners. Don't want it removing the fillers in the polish/glaze.

thx

Ths speed wax contains no cleaners, they sell a seperate speed polish for that. It is carnuba based, i find it simerler to extra gloss autoglym but with a higher carnuba content and no drying time

Thanks for info. No drying time is a big plus. The autoglym extra gloss stuff takes ages.

So as a polish which do you recommend; considering I want to hide the swirl marks as much as possible.

1. ag super resin

2. p21s gepc

3. 3m ihg

Also I saw Dr Wack Wash and Wax in the shop the other day as well. According to the website, this contains caranuba also, and as the wash part is not a shampoo; all you need do is rinse. No drying or buffing. Hmmm....maybe this would be good for the weeks you don't actually wax your car. Sort of a wash and quick detailer - all in one.

Personally I wouldnt bother with the AG resin. I tried it and it didnt get rid of anything, small light scratches or swirls.

It would seem that the One Grand Glaze polish is recommended for this task.

Yeah...would like to try the One Grand Glaze. But won't have it in time.

I do have IHG and P21S GEPC though.

By the way - the website which sells Dr Wack, recommends a sponge to apply it. What did you use ?

I saw some JMC 3d fibre cloths (microfibre) in the supermarket the other day. Thinking of giving these a try for applying the wax and buffing it off. Or maybe the Autoglym perfect polishing cloths.

I've never used Dr Wack, sorry :p

For the wax part - its best to use those little foam applicators (you can get from meguiars) and a microfibre to buff off.

:xyxthumbs

Trying to buy those foam applicators in Ireland is a joke. They look at you like you have 2 heads. Most people use a t-shirt or this thing they sell called 'bag of rags'. And none of it 100% cotton. You can get cotton applicators though. But they don't feel like cotton to me.

I might have to buy a cheap tin or turtle wax just to get hold of the free foam applicator pad. And I can get the micro-fibre at the supermarket.

What do you recommend for applying polish then ?

thx

Superesin wont hide or mask swirls as it has no fillers in it and is mild.

I appply the speed wax with a meguiars foam applicator and remove with a Meguairs microfibre. Wxpensive but all i could find.

You know what the 3m does so you might as well try the P21s??? How about an application of both?

I use foam applicators to apply all my stuff, do you want me to send you a pack of meguairs ones over they shouldnt take long???? Halfords in the UK sell then to? No equvilent in Ireland?

Thanks Rich. I'll take you up on that offer.

Have sent you a PM with my address.

No Halfords here.

All we have it MotorStore. They usually carry accessories from a company called Kent. I have found their polishing cloths and cotton polishing pads to be quite abrasive, and not 100% cotton as they say.

I have had good luck with Autoglym perfect polishing cloths. But they fall to bits.

So I'm thinking - use foam pads for the polish and wax like youself.

And some microfibre cloths for removing and buffing.

Have you heard of JMC 3d fibre cloths. That's what's available over here. Seen them advertised on QVC as well. Just wondering how they compare to others on the market.

No probs PMd you.

Agree about the autoglym cloths.

No experience of the said Mfs all i could find are the megs ones.

Thanks Rich.

Much appreciated.

By the way - how do you tackle swirl marks ?

I'm thinking of trying it in this order :

GEPC to clean the paint / light scratches etc..

IHG to fill swirls, improve gloss.

Dr OK Wack for waxing.

Sounds good.

My order is

Meguairs Medallion paint cleaner

Megs no 9 swirl remover

Autoglym super resin

Megs hand polish, or No 7 show car glaze

Waxes

Normally. Hi tech yellow no 26 meguiars

Toppped with P21s Concours wax.

If pushed for time A1 speed wax. This stuff is so fast you can wash and the car and wax it afterwards in the same time a quick detail would take.

Rich,

Do you apply the #9 by hand. Does it actually take out swirls that way. I thought SMR's needed to be worked in with an orbital buffer, as the abrasives are too difficult to break down otherwise. That's what I found with 3m SMR anyway.

If this group buy goes ahead, then no need to get those Meguiars microfibre towels.

Never had any serious swirls there were a few and thay came out by hand with the no 9. I was quite lucky with the 306 it is 3 years old Today acyually! But only had 4k on the clock when i brought it, it was mint when i brought it, just not quite sure wher it had been all its life!

I am up for the group buy, have you Pmd NIck?

Yep. Looking forward to some decent microfibre cloths.

Regarding swirls, my car was never touched by the dealer, but the following day I washed it, I noticed there were quite a few swirls showing up on the car.

I think maybe some of them were caused by the absorber towel I used. My brother used it to wash his car !! And it got a bit tatty as a result. But most of the swirls I reckon were put there by the importer. Probably washed the wax off it with a brush, when it came into Roslare. Most of them I got rid of with 3m SMR by hand, but still a lot show up under halogen lights. Do you have that problem as well ? Very annoying on a brand new car, especially as every other car I've owened (usually silver) was almost perfect when it came to swirls. But I guess with red it's harder to keep perfect.

So the plan now is just to hide the buggers, until I get brave enough to use an orbital buffer in the new year. Which is also going to be hard to get hold of, as most shops who carry them don't know the difference between an orbital buffer and a power drill.

Ocassionally spot a marks on mine under garage forcourt halogens, but luckily no 9 has always sorted them.
