3M IHG + Show Car wax

If your after a Porter Cable, have a look at Costaltool.com they have them for $119 inc counterweight and hook & loop pad. Postage is another $40 or so.

Autoglym Resin will take out minor swirls but thats about it. As for applying wax, look in your local shops for some soft foam pads, thats all you really need.

Thanks for all the help guys. I'll definitely be getting a PC, but probably in Jan. Just paid my car insurance and road tax, so a bit tight at the minute.

Am hoping to detail this weekend. Was looking through my supplies last night and here are the alternatives. Can you tell me which would be best for hiding/removing swirls as well as giving a good shine. I do have some 3M SMR but am reluctant to use it, as I only end up creating loads of tiny swirl marks usually.

So here is what I am left with :

1. P21S GEPC + Autoglym Extra Gloss

2. Autoglym Super Resin + Autoglym Extra Gloss

3. IHG + Turtle Wax Emerald Caranuba

I believe the Turtle Wax contains some cleaners so it may negate the swirl filling abilities of IHG.

thx

I have posted your foam applicators this morning airmail, hopefully they shoulnt take to long to come.

Thanks Nick. Will let you know what I want when the site comes up.

Thanks Rich for the Pads. Much appreciated.

By the way - a friend a spoke to at lunch who has a red 01 BMW 318ci uses Turtle Wax Scratch and Swirl Remover followed by their Emerald Caranuba. His car looks really amazing. I wonder if all this negative turtle wax sentiment is just snobbery as it definitely looked as good as anything I did with Autoglym in the past.

I have tried the Turtlewax, it is ok but to my mind not as good as the Autoglym.

The P21S with Extra Gloss sounds like an intresting idea, also worth trying P21S + Super Resin + Gloss and report back.

Saw a friends BMW today, which he detailed a few weeks ago with Turtle Wax Emerald liquid. It looked amazing. So I paid a visit to Autozone this evening and bought a bottle of it. Seems to be the only readily available caranuba wax in the stores here.

So the plan tommorrow morning is not to use autoglym. It's given me good service in the past, but the extra gloss is a pain in the butt as you have to leave it dry for ages, and as I probably will get 3-4 hours good weather tommorrow, it's too risky.

Instead :

1. P21S GEPC.

2. 3M IHG

3. T. Wax Emerald caranuba.

2 questions :

1) Back of GEPC bottle says it removes light scratches and swirls. Is this true ? This is exactly what I have. Light swirls. Not spiderwebbing. I wonder will the GEPC help.

2) According to TW's website, Emerald seems to have some cleaning ability. "Micronized polishing agents correct fine abrasions that develop with exposure to environmental contaminants" I wonder would these polishing agents remove the IHG, and effectively cancel out it's swirl filling ability.

By the way, the guy who sold me the T. Wax, tried to sell me a bottle of Turtle Wax scratch and swirl remover. He claimed it was non-abrasive and it would remove swirls no problem. Anyone ever try this ?

thx

I am not sure how a scratch or swirl remover would work if it is not abbrasive. Also if the TW has cleaners in it, if should also remove some of the fillers but maybe not all the fillers if you apply softly(??)

Well when I tried GEPC by hand with a foam applicator it didn't remove scratches, in fact it seemed to highlight them slightly. Got off waterspots and really cleaned the paint however. It may work with a PC or other orbital buffer. It's very mild, often called a paint cleansing lotion. Use that first, then if it didn't take out the marks, use IHG. That's what IHG was made for. As I mentioned before, using S100 GEPC then a glaze increases clarity.

Non abrasive swirl remover? Impossible. It may feel completely smooth to the touch but still be abrasive. There are 2 kinds of abrasives, physical (so you will feel it), or Chemical, (which you won't.) If it's a swirl remover it's going to have one or the other. You can't remove a swirl unless the surface is taken down below the scratching.
