Yes, to be clear I really admire the Vette. It is a terrific bargain in many ways. I just grew up around Porsches and I have fond memories of learning to drive a 928 and 911 with my dad.

The Corvette interiors is definitely getting better all the time and the new silver paint they have on the Z06 is incredible. I would just prefer a Porsche for other reasons...but I would probably lose to a stoplight drag contest as a result (5 seconds v. 3.7 seconds for the Vette). Now some of my rich friends have a competition GT3-now that would be an interesting comparison!

hahaha you typical porsche guys. :grinno: there is no comparison, and i will put money on the z06 beating the cayman in every category.

and i dont think anyone has mentioned that the 505 hp that it has been rated at is actual wheel HP and not at the crank. , so at the crank i would guess its more around 550-580.

Hahaha, typical Corvette guy, distilling everything to the numbers and categories.

Did you ever consider that there are other reasons to prefer one vehicle over another? I've been around Corvettes; for the last 17 years I've been a manager at a Chevrolet dealership. I've driven one or two during that time, including ZR1s, Z06s, Callaway twin turbos, and one of the Corvette Challenge cars from 1989. (I worked for Valley Chevrolet in '89, the Corvette Challenge Series Champions.) I think they're great cars. But if you gave me one I'd sell it and keep the money.

Same with the Porsche. I was a sales manager (of a different franchise, Lincoln-Mercury) in a Porsche dealership in '87 and '88. Great cars, but not for me. Sure, they've changed since then. I get my Mazda serviced at my old place of employment and I get to keep up on the cool German stuff. Love 'em, don't want 'em. I'd love to DRIVE one, but not OWN one.

No one has to bow down to the Corvette God, no one has to wish they were lucky enough to own a Corvette. Owning a 'Vette is easy; work hard, then write a check. And when you've reached that level, you understand what the money is worth, and you spend a little more time looking at and driving the cars than you do looking at the magazines and brochures. And when you spend the seat time, you get to know which one is right for you. Believe me, there are better sports cars that aren't as fast as the Corvette.

If there was no reason to buy cars besides performance numbers, it would be very hard to justify buying a Ferrari. Especially cars before the F430.

Yet in America, it is much harder to get a new Ferrari than a Porsche, Corvette, Lotus, Lambo, etc. F430's go for over MSRP routinely, while the Carrera GT can be had at a 10% discount.

Regardless of how you feel about Ferrari, this drives home an important point. Desirability is a huge factor driving car sales. Performance is not the only reason a person can prefer one car over the other. It's about the total experience. Looks, how it drives, exclusivity, image. If you don't care about anything but raw numbers, then fine. Making a decision should be as simple as reviewing a specs sheet and your wallet.

Not bashing the Corvette or Porsche, but this always seems to be the argument. People should drive what makes them the most happy. I do. :)

Believe me, there are better sports cars that aren't as fast as the Corvette.

Of course you mean, better sports cars to you... ;) :)

Everybody likes a different kind of car, which is why so many can thrive, or at least exist, in the market place.

So, much like with waxes, it helps if discussions of one don't turn into discussions of others. I for one think the C5 Z06 was an awesome car with awesome performance. I saw a stock one turning in a 12.06 ET while I was turning in a 13.2 this week. Of course the driver played a part, and someone else could probably have squeezed my car into the 12's. But would I trade with him? No way. I like the character of my car and the thrill (both aural and viceral) when I press the go pedal. Not the numbers associated with it.

But man, the C6 Z06 will be one hot tamale for sure. And kudos to GM and the Corvette team for it. It will be an amazing car with amazing potential for sure. I can't wait to hear one spinning up towards 7 grand!

LOL, got me. Have you ever tried explaining a Miata to a Corvette guy? It's such an intensely personal thing sometimes. You like the long legged supermodel, and I like the 5'1" brunette with the great smile and jaunty attitude. Who's right? You are. And I am.
