Just got a PC 7424, and am working on some fairly rough black paint on a Jag XJR. Lots of bits of dirt trapped in the clear (refinished), some mild checking, pits, etc. I have been wetsanding with 2000 grit, which is working very well. Checking doesn't go away, of course, but it looks MUCH better. Clayed first. I buffed out some of the wetsanding last night with the orange pad using 3M Perfect It II rubbing compound, followed by 3M P2 foam pad glaze, also with a orange pad. This combo works pretty well, but it takes a LONG time. 1/2 of the hood took around 4-5 hours, to wetsand and buff.
Question is- is the yellow pad going to clean up the 2000 grit scratches faster with the 3M rubbing compound? I wouldn't want it to make any deeper scratches. If it's got any sort of grit rating, I'd be curious to know what it is. Orange works OK, but I'd like to save time, maybe go yellow/orange/white. Plan on topping with Klasse for winter protection. Also, there are some areas, that the paint is not quite so rough, but still pretty bad. I was hoping to avoid wetsanding everything, but I'm pretty sure the orange won't level these areas without spending a LOT of time.
Also- the Jag is HIGHLY contoured- almost everywhere. I had no problem with any burn through, kind of the got the hand of the contour movements with the PC.
Any recommendations? BTW- this is an Autogeek pad set up.
