Yellow pad strength, approximate grit? Wetsanding

Just got a PC 7424, and am working on some fairly rough black paint on a Jag XJR. Lots of bits of dirt trapped in the clear (refinished), some mild checking, pits, etc. I have been wetsanding with 2000 grit, which is working very well. Checking doesn't go away, of course, but it looks MUCH better. Clayed first. I buffed out some of the wetsanding last night with the orange pad using 3M Perfect It II rubbing compound, followed by 3M P2 foam pad glaze, also with a orange pad. This combo works pretty well, but it takes a LONG time. 1/2 of the hood took around 4-5 hours, to wetsand and buff.

Question is- is the yellow pad going to clean up the 2000 grit scratches faster with the 3M rubbing compound? I wouldn't want it to make any deeper scratches. If it's got any sort of grit rating, I'd be curious to know what it is. Orange works OK, but I'd like to save time, maybe go yellow/orange/white. Plan on topping with Klasse for winter protection. Also, there are some areas, that the paint is not quite so rough, but still pretty bad. I was hoping to avoid wetsanding everything, but I'm pretty sure the orange won't level these areas without spending a LOT of time.

Also- the Jag is HIGHLY contoured- almost everywhere. I had no problem with any burn through, kind of the got the hand of the contour movements with the PC.

Any recommendations? BTW- this is an Autogeek pad set up.

I dont think that you are going to put in more scratches....you will get some micromarring, but that should be taken care of on your next pass with the orange...and then the white to remove that micromarring, and then I would use a finishing pad or a polishing pad with a light polish to remove anything left, and then seal it up and top with a lot of carnauba

Nope, certainly didn't scratch it more. Worked very well, could have used something that cut more. Wore out this yellow pad in two days! Is this normal? I used the HELL out of it though, probably 15 hrs so far on "6". The center of the pad wore down and got "squishy", and the velcro type backing on the back got too loose to use. I though it would last longer than this! I was applying down pressure some while using, it worked well, and I had read on this forum that many used pressure with good results.
