Would you feel weird...

Yea...this is the main reason I cant get another beater car right now. Because I have plenty to choose from down the road, unfortunately with my past driving record, to insure even my winter beater it was around $165/month...now its down to $100/month but still Id rather have something that I can park like a bicyle in my garage and not have to worry about insurance or anything. :(

Have you looked into a bike? I had my bike at the local repair shop a few weeks ago and saw a really nice Giant for $250. I bought a Univega for $90 a few year ago...used...and it is not the best bike or the newest but it gets me around town really nice.

The problem with a bike is...My work isnt that close to be able to ride a bike everyday there and to my girlfriends. :( It takes me about 12 minutes via car to get to work right now....if I was on a bike...it'd probably take me an hour or more Im not saying Im slow on a bike, but it is a long ways

my sister just got a scooter to get to and from work. I wont mention the name of the company because they shipped it broken and then told us to fix it ouselves with used parts. I digress, the scooter is cool and definately a very economical way to go.

a buddy of mine owns a scooter business on the side along with his used car dealership and I do work for him from time to time with oil changes on the cars and these scooters are no joke, a guy brought in one that litteraly could only do 30 miles an hour, we bought a complete kit to "mod" it out and afterwards were doing 70+ miles an hour keeping in mind this was a 50cc scooter..so not only are they cool but once you get one you can mod it hahaha.

The 150cc should come being able to do 65+ mph :) Which is a big plus because I dont want to be the scooter everyone passes and honks at haha

Glowin: Can you PM me the name of the scooter so I make sure it isnt the one I am purchasing. Thanks for the input!

I ride a moped a lot.... I found it in a basement last summer when I was with a moving company and offered the owners $25 for it. It's a 1978 Puch Maxi, had 400 miles on it and the last time it was registered/ridden was 1985. It wouldn't start, so I brought it home, put new gas in it and a new spark plug and cleaned the carb and it started up like new.

Since then I've put about 2000 miles on it, between riding to work (25 miles round trip), riding to school (30 miles) and around campus (10 or 15 miles a week). I've averaged about 125 miles a gallon with a top speed of 40

Very cool :) Well the verdict is in..I have the greenlight to order a moped as soon as I get my $1,300 school bill paid off...looking to knock off $400 this week. Should be able to order by the end of this month!

Just wanted to let people know if anyone else was curious...The "Viva" Phantoms on ebay are not the same as Vento, other than they share the same name and possible motor, no one has been able to tell me the specs of the viva to compare the engines. I dont want to be stuck with some off brand so I would reccomend going with either the Vento Phantom or Phantera, parts are readily availale for both and have great performance.

Cool! Well good luck with it.

Hey, if you feel like a road trip to really gauge its mileage capabilities take it down to New Orleans and we'll have a "detailing day" :D

I think you may need a plate for your scooter, but not insurance. I remember having to have a plate on my scooter back when I was 15. I had a Honda Spree, it was a fun toy and if you removed the governor, etc they would do about 45-47mph, if I rememebr correctly (that was 17 years ago).

How about selling your beloved Grand Prix? If you get a more econmical car your insurance will probably drop and you can use it as a DD. Older Hondas and Toyotas are always a great investment. I have never riden a scooter before but I assume on bumpy roads they would be uncomfortable. I don't know, a car seems much more practical to me. I can fill up the corolla for $~20 @ $~3.30. It takes alot of beating with my lead foot :o lol.

I have looked into this route, but I would need to sell my car for $6k for me to make a profit of $3k...Then save the $2k to give me $5k cash. Probably have to take out a loan for another $12k just to get me into the civic I like. And with my cash I would probably just go the route of getting another 5K loan to get into a Subaru. All in all...I will probably sell my car this fall/spring, save as much as I can this winter and then get into a newer car this spring. The moped is going to be just something I can have for fun and when I only need to go places that are close and I dont need to bring anyone with me. For only $2k I think I can justify it, as I probably spend that much in 5 months with detailing supplies lol Im not trying to become some activist for the gas prices :) I just want something fun that will save me gas when there is no need to drive my GTP....dont get me wrong I love the supercharged power :) Hopefully I can sell it this fall and open myself to options to getting a newer car.

oooo how I cannot wait to live on my own so I can get a GSX-R

Regarding the crotch rocket...

I have recently been evaluating a new motorcycle. I had a Honda CBR F3 years ago, and THOUGHT recently about buying a CBR 600RR. That got nixed as soon as I checked on insurance... It was going to be almost $200/month. Let me also note that I'm a 33 y/o married male with a spotless driving record.

I've now stared looking at VFR-800's which are considerably cheaper to insure. Another one to look at is the 919. Without the plastics, they're a lot cheaper to insure. Of course if you've never had a motorcycle, the VFR and 919 aren't good learner bikes.

Just some food for thought...

Go for the scooter dude.

Andy, very interesting information regarding insurance rates! That is something I never knew before that it was so high. The wait is gonna kill me till I get this thing..

well I wanted to update this once again in case anyone is following it that is also interested in a scooter. I found many scooter forums, websites, etc...and again I found more reviews saying there is a better company out there for a scooter. United Motors, specifically the Matrix 150cc rated at 60 mph. So far this one is looking the best after all the research I have done on it, and there is a dealer not too far away so I may be going there tomorrow for a test drive if I get time!

Sorry for so many updates...but scooters are very difficult to review and find info on their reliability/parts.

I set up a test "drive" for a 2007 Yamaha Majesty today...395cc, highway legal. Sleek looks IMO...Around $80 a month to finance with zero down. I could get into one by the end of this week!! :)

Have you considered a cruiser style bike, if you really want a motorcycle? Im 33 married like the other poster but I was quoted between $40-50/mo for full coverage insurance on a Honda Shadow Spirit 750, Suzuki Boulavard 800 or Harley 1200 Sportster.

Yeah, cruisers are MUCH cheaper. Short story long... I want a v-rod, but have a cbr budget. I've kinda split the middle with the Honda VFR800.

The bikes Chuck mentioned above are very forgiving cycles. Cheap on insurance, comfy to ride, good fuel economy, etc...

Well the thing is my parents wont let me get a sport bike or motorcycle until I move out because of my dads past history with them...and my past driving record :)

If you guys shoot over to Yamaha's website, take a look at the majesty. Gets up to 120 mph on flat roads, doesnt have that "scooter" look to it. Im going today to the dealership to take a look and see what the financing is like...and test drive!! You guys wouldnt believe the websites Ive been too talking all about modding their scooters and aftermarket parts :chuckle: I cant wait to detail the thing :spot

So whats the difference? That scooter specs out almost identical to a motorcycle. Look at a bike like the Honda Shodaow Spirit 750 and the scooter side by side. Size, price, height, weight, etc are almost identical, just a few cc's smaller thats all and given the size of the engine you may have to register it like a cycle. Why not stick to one of the less expensive 150cc scooters and save your $$ towards that new car you were talking about?
