what kind of Digital Camera...?

New Normal
Well my Digitrex camera just gave up the ghost. Had it for a year and it provided me with the ability to post up pictures on the forum.

Am now officially looking for a digital camera. Am a complete novice to these things but was looking on Engadget today where they were reviewing the Sony DSC-H5. It has everything that I would think would cover my novice abilities and more. Two problem"s. Does not come out until May of this year and a five hundred dollar price tag.

Would like to get better quality pictures to post on the forums. Anyone out there care to suggest a digital camera that is three hundred or less with good quality pic's, 8to12x optical zoom, and one can add lenses later on.

Hope everyone has an opinion. That is what I am looking for. AN OPINION

Greg, you will like the A610 I have the A75 find it easy to use, and it has some features that make it more that a point and shoot but not too much to overwhelm a novice.

I have the Canon PowerShot A95 and I think it is great. I beleive it is similar to the A610, not sure what features it has that the others don't but mine has a 12X zoom, interchangeable lenses and is 5 megapixels. So far I am very happy with it and have had it about a year.

Sony Cybershot p200 w/7.2mp. Thats what I got now. I'm also looking for a 35mm DSLR next few months coming

I cant wait until I decide to order it!!

I have a Canon PowerShot A620 that is pretty good for $400 but try and get a digital SLR since they have better lenses and better chips. The lens creates sharper images even at the same resolution.

Keep the suggestions/opinions coming. I am researching every one of them. They have many traits that I like in each one.

Thanks for the responses!!

I like my A610 a lot. It's compact, lots of features, fast, and takes great shots.

If I had the loot, I'd go for the Canon DSLR, but its also much larger (if that matters to you).

When you say add lenses are you referring to converters or actually swapping in and out new lenses? If you want to put in new lenses, you have to go the dSLR route which is a lot more $. You'd probably spend around $600-700 just to start out.
If not than you can get a pretty good P+S camera for your budget. There are so many options out there, that some good advice is to look at what you want to use it for (cars, nature, landscape), what options are important (video, manual controls, power source, etc.) then take it from there. I also highly recommending going to a couple different electronics stores to get the feel of different cameras and the controls. After that read the reviews and hit up pricegrabber.com for the best prices.
Here are some review sites I found helpful:
www.dcresource.com
www.dpreview.com
www.steves-digicams.com

I'm pretty sure your looking for, and would be better suited with an advanced P+S. Something in the 4-5 megapixel range should be fine for you and prints at 8x10. Just a FYI my Fuji Finepix S5100 (4MP, 10x zoom) produces very nice 8x10s, and some of my shots have been winning in my local photography club :bigups

Well, 97F1504x4 beat me to it:

This site was instrumental in picking a camera. They have many reviews from users, and I did a lot of research.

Iuse an Olympus C-5060. It does everything I have wanted, and much more that I have never even tried.

Thanks again for all the information. I have a plethora of things to read.

Just what I was looking for.

I want to be able to add on a lense without changing anything. Take the lense off and I am back to square one. There are some awfully good scenery pictures that will be available on my trip to Alaska.

Let's face it... I am looking for a camera to take better pictures of my truck. AM/was hoping to be able to post better looking pictures of the vehicles that I will detailing this summer in Alaska.

I personaly have a Konica Minolta (sp) and i love the thing, i have also seen a few others and loved them. Mine is 5 Mega pixles which is good enough for me, also it is easy to use and takes a qucik picture, almost and quick as a regular camera. Im not sure hoe much they cost as we bought it with airmiles or were to get them but i love mine and i recomened them to everyone

Nikon D50 > RebXT

^^^ Nikon D50 seems to be the best value and quality as far as entry level dSLRs. I'm very tempted to pick one up, hoping the prices drop after PMA 06.

Which model do you have? Konica Minolta sold out to Sony the beginning of this year, so you won't be seeing any more new Konica Minolta models out.
