What is a gentle car wash to use that won't strip wax and isn't rough on the paint?

I thought I had asked this question on here once... but I couldn't find the thread lol I guess I didn't. Anyway, I bought some Meg's Gold Class car wash the other day, but I got to wondering... is there something else I should be using that is more gentle or is this ok? I'm using grout sponges for my washes or this really soft mitt I found at my local Autozone... perhaps I should stick with the grout sponge for wasing? I've read on here that it's very gentle on the paint.

Anyway, is the Gold Class a decent choice or is there something else I should be using? I have tried Lusso a few times and really did like that.

Can't say I've ever scratched the paint with Gold Class and a grout sponge. That is a pretty gentle combo. Just don't skimp on the amount of shampoo, e.g. 1 oz per gallon works fine.

Guitarist, if you search you will find hundreds of threads on this exact concern.

Are you limiting your selection to products that can be purchased locally or mail order?

Griot's Car Wash for me. Period. Well...OK, I'll use something like Gold Class for (sealed) wheels and wheelwells if it's on sale, but for washing the vehicle proper I won't use anything but Griot's.

Some folks (hey, Tom P :wavey ) have almost convinced me to try Optimum Shampoo, but the best I can recall hearing about it is that it's "almost as nice as Griot's". Ditto for the DuraGloss. So somebody might be very happy with either of those, I just don't want to try fixing something that's not broken.

Duragloss CWC is my prefered wash soap.

Washed both my 'Bee and my Wife's vehicle this morning. I used Meguiar's Gold Class on her car and Duragloss on mine and as good as Meguiar's is Duragloss is just in another league, my sheepskin mitt just glides across the paint and the added gloss is icing on the cake.

Yeah, I was trying to keep it local if possible. I have to order some stuff soon, but not for a month or so... just thought I would get something locally for right now. I almost got that Meg's wash (don't remember the name of it, but it's bright yellow and looks really thick about 10-12.00) but I wasn't sure how good it was and it said it had carnauba in it which I didn't really want. So I just got the Gold Class. The thing is, I wash my car quite frequently... probably once every 3 days at least so I wanted something extra gentle.

Guitarist,

Because I have no life, and have access to lots of auto detail products, my latest kick is to try new car wash shampoos every week.

If I read a post on any of the detailing forums that states "X" shampoo is the best thing since sliced bread I test it out.

Over the last several months I have tried all of the Meguiar's Consumer line, Zaino Z7, Griots, Mothers, Surf City, Gliptone, and several I just can't think of at the moment.

I have a bottle of 1Z Perls coming in next week so I will report my thought on that after I test it out.

I judge them first and foremost on lubricity, cleaning ability, and cost.

There are a couple more I want to try like Tom P's Optimum, several of the Do-Do Juices, and lastly the Ultima soap.

My top 3 as of right now would be Duragloss CWC, followed by Griots, and the Meguiar's Gold Class.

Yikes, indeed! I'm really thankful now that the environment is pretty clean where I live!

I'm going to return to Duragloss, as it was a pretty amazing wash even though I'll have to order it online now. I'm always going to have that and Griot's on tap.

Guitarist,

I would not waste my $$ on that yellow Meguiar's soap.

I tried it out just last week and came away unimpressed.

Meguiar's Ultimate Wash & Wax is a just an ok soap but really falls behind in the cleaning department, especially vs others in the Meguiar's line.

If you stick with just a local go with Meguiar's Gold Class or Duragloss CWC.

Jeff

I was never impressed with Gold Class but that was 5+ years ago. Duragloss is pretty good, but if we're talking local shopping, less commonplace.

Duragloss and Griots are both very slick--most important factor to me--I'd say Griots maybe a little bit more, but Duragloss also leaves behind a fresh shine--I'm guessing there's some polymers/resins in the mix that deposit on the paint. It leaves behind a certain clarity. Griots ,doesn't seem to leave anything like that behind, just great cleansing ability.

Tom,

Agreed about the freshly waxed look of the Duragloss CWC, it's something I really like about DG but some others might not want that look.

Imho Duragloss is the slicker of the two, I have to have a good grasp on my sheepskin mitt for fear that it will slide off the car! ( I don't wear the mitt like a glove).

Jeff

Dp foam wash is awesome and so is zaino's polish wash. Both are hp balanced and leave wax and sealant on the car. Plus they bottle goes along way.

I might try out the DG wash... I LOVE the 105 TPP, i'm waiting on it to dry right now actually.

Have your local body shop supply store order you a gallon of Meguiar's #00 Shampoo. That is the product you seek. Order, pick up :)

I am still standing by my fk118 for as long as it lasts me.

Then most probably I will fall back on 1Z or DJ born to be mild.

If I could access Griot's I would give it a try for sure on Acc's word.
