What is a gentle car wash to use that won't strip wax and isn't rough on the paint?

If I could access Griot's I would give it a try for sure on Acc's word.

I got an e-mail some time back announcing Griot's stuff is available at Advance Auto Parts. I haven't been there yet, but I'd assume you could get a small bottle of the Car Wash there.

Dp foam wash is awesome ....

I bought a quart of this last week and have done 3 washes so far. Works well, lots of foaming assuming that's what you desire. It still doesn't have the lubricity of the Optimum product and that is a bit of a disappointer for me. So, I've added another shelf-sitter to my collection of washes.

I've used nearly all the washes mentioned in this thread except for the Zaino product. The Optimum is the best for my use. I haven't come across anything that's quite so rich, offers exceptional lubricity and cleans well. Residual gloss is top-notch, too.

The ValuGard Detail Wash is the same formula as the FK 118C.

Both are butyl and salt/sodium free, one ounce per gallon of water mix, same.

Grumpy

Yep, my Advance stocks it. I'm curious as to how long that's going to last. Griots is good stuff, but honestly, the clientele at AA is, well, umm, the "Bubba" crowd. Griots stuff is not dummy proof and its expensive.

For what it's worth, Meguiar's #00 is the mildest car wash I've ever used. That said I haven't tried anything new in several years. It's not necessarily the best cleaning soap, but it is extremely mild. If you wash your car multiple times a week, the cleaning strength is probably not going to be an issue, as everything will be pretty fresh.

If you use any kind of gun/spray device though, like a foam gun or whatever the "new" foam gun is, #00 has very little foaming.

Glad you joined this thread.

As an aside, I think you had mentioned something in the past about car shampoos with sodium (something) being bad to use. I never got a chance to get into the reasoning behind this. Is it because it messes with the paint, or because of its reaction to the skin?

They aren't the same. I have a gallon of the Detail Wash I am using up on wheels and I have loved 118 for a long long time.

118 stays significantly wetter and definitely is slicker with more cleaning power than Detail Wash. 118 at wash ratio is much better on releasing thicker road films and gets rid of tar wisps in a single swipe. Detail wash doesn't do this or takes multiple swipes.

The sodium ingredients(sodium lauryl sulfate and laureth sulfate)are part of the foaming agents in soap that help with cleaning. If you look at a body wash or hand soap, many of them have the same 2 ingredients as well as similar things that are in car wash shampoos. A component to these is that they dry your hands... but I am not sure its related to the sodium ingredients specifically.

Optimum No Rinse is hands down the gentlest car wash product on wax. In fact, the polymers that remove the dirt without scratching also add back slickness, gloss and shine. I've got customers that haven't had their vehicles waxed in well over a year because regular washing with ONR keeps them beading and looking freshly waxed.

I also did a comparison of a few in this thread - Duragloss, Gold Class, and Griots. I think Gold Class is a nice pick it up and try it out product, but I do think there are better shampoos. I personally like Adam's car wash the most, followed by Duragloss. ONR is a good product - I keep it around for various jobs, but I like suds so I only wash my car with ONR when the weather demands it.

ONR and Duragloss for me depending on my mood. Both are economical and pretty much couldn't ask a product to do more.

I love ONR. Is there any place that isn't mail order that sells it. I am in the LA / Santa Clarita area

Unfortunately Advance Auto Parts do not operate in Greece :).

In any case thank you for the thoughtful suggestion.

If one is located in a major USA city, one can open the phone book and look up "auto body supply" stores. Determine if they sell Meguiars, order/purchase product.

(My local guy seems to be able to get the various product lines except for the consumer level stuff. If he doesn't have it on his shelf, he gets it next day. He's a tiny, hole-in-the-wall operation.)

I am still standing by my fk118 for as long as it lasts me.

Then most probably I will fall back on 1Z or DJ born to be mild.

If I could access Griot's I would give it a try for sure on Acc's word.

Long story short I found access to the Griot's car wash and I will try it sometime in August. Through the same outlet I will also try DG901.

I already bought ONR so I will also give that a try.

Deep down I hope they all prove at least as good as 118 because these are easier to purchase. DJ will have to wait.

Just received two new shampoos to test.

FK118 and Ultima.

Will post my findings later this week after a bucket & foam gun tests.

I love Optimum's shampoo for "regular" washes when I'm not using no rinse. Gold class is ok, Griot's is pretty close as well, but Optimum is my favorite.

By "pretty close" I gather you consider Griot's to be inferior to, but in the same ballpark as, the Optimum- any particular reasons for your preference? (NO, not an :argue: I'm just always interested in this stuff).

Kinda suprised you find Gold Class anywhere comparable to the Optimum and the Griot's though
