What happened to the old Autopia?

Anybody remember the end of Blazin Saddles when Sherrif Bart gave that speech about moving on to help others - and the whole town said bull sh!t, and he said ok, you got me, to tell the truth, things have been awfully dull around here. That's what's happening to Autopia, as we've become more politically correct and playing nice, it's got really dull. We need a little drama, a little action.

Uhm...nah, drama/action on a site about *detailing cars*?!? What's to get worked up about?

IMO most people who rile things up on the internet (or in bars, or...or...) are [twits] and I don't hit this site to mix it up with some [idjit].

Heh heh, you trying to get me to put my response in [Gabby Hayes voice]/[/Gabby Hayes voice] brackets or something :chuckle: "Now, you just cut that out, hear? Stirrin' things up...."

I've been here for what seems forever ... several forums shifts etc. Probably OLD OLD Autopia. I recall at least 2x having to resign up due to forum crashes/rebuilds.

Has there been a shift? Without a doubt YES. For the better.. very subjective.

The old days, there was serious amounts of hype. Alot of people with passion about their techniques and products. Which obviously lead to a lot of aggressive discussions etc. but in doing so.. there was a tonne of information exchange and as a whole, helped elavate the detailing game for the pro and casual home detailer.

Censorshiop was a lot less. Which allowed for differing viewpoints to be expressed. However, a lot of members felt personally attacked and were wounded. How in the world someone can be that sensitive online in a virtual environment was crazy but it is what it is. And like a community, the needs of the many outweighed the few.

Personally i find the current Autopia culture not as progressive and basically a forum of homogenious thoughts and ideas about detailing. A lot of rehashing the same thing time and time again.

Autopia was a home of passionate detailers passing on their views and now it's more scholastic and society friendly and don't rock the boat or you may be asked to tow the line.

The aspect I dislike the most is the "forum vendor sponsorship" aspect... i perferred it when we were asked to contribute personally and had a sponsor indication under our username. Granted, that wasn`t very well received when it was launched. I even think there were levels of sponsorship if i recall correctly.

This whole `support`our vendors and be really careful and tread lightly about non-forum vendors sponsors wreaks and is probably the single biggest aspect of OLD vs. NEW guard at Autopia. As you can tell, I am an old guard fan and accept the new guard as it is still one of the best sites for newbies to gather a lot of information.

Yeah, the "not stepping on toes" is the thing that makes sponsored forums like MOL such a drag, and it has been difficult here in that respect, but for the most part we're still able to speak our mind.

For as long as I have been here, there has never been a way to be a "personal sponsor", and in fact I don't remember ever hearing that there had been...are you sure it was this site? I know the idea was floated a couple of times since I've been here, but I don't think it was given any serious consideration.

It's been soo long maybe I am thinking of another site but there are very very few forum sites that I would ever have contributed $ too. Maybe DavidB or Scottwax can shed some light if there were forum members who contributed and had a tag as such in 2001/2002. I seem to recall a period where the forum costs were significant for David. Not they aren't today.. just back then there wasn't a store and i remember when the T's, license plate holders first came out to help with costs.

Maybe i'm thinking BITOG... (bobistheoilguy.com)

If you don't remember RedCarGuy, you haven't been around long enough to get a clue of the "old" Autopia.

Speaking of the old Autopia, good to see you posting again SpoiledMan! :wavey

I gotta agree, it feels a bit different. Maybe I've just changed my views on detailing in the past few years. I still browse the forums regularly but usually just because I like to see what kind of results people are getting with various products.
