What do you make of this paint?

So I finally was able to inspect my buddys new paint on his challenger.

He says its called matte clear

I tried to reach the painter twice to no avail. It looks matte in appearance, no gloss to it. Looks good.

Some scuff mark, took the `matte clear` with it :(

you might have noticed it too in the first pic

Then I start inspecting the lines..and see this...

Nevermind the wax or polish buildup the body shop or someone else left

I asked him if they wrapped over the paint ans he said no.

Now I am not a painter, but is that possible?

It was thick, like one of those clear bra wraps.

I`m trying to figure this thing out. I`m confused.

I don`t see how that could not be a clear wrap type material.

Anyone have any ideas/thoughts?

One of these days he`s going to trust me to work on it and I`m not sure what I would do with that area if I had it in my garage at this moment.

Thanks.

There are several matte clears on the market, they are applied just like a normal clear they just give a matte finish instead of gloss. If the painter just taped off the black area and then sanded the old clear then applied the new matte clear there is going to be a "ledge" where the tape line was as the paint is now thicker in that area than the rest of the car. There are several products to help blend the edge when doing this but seeing as its two different finishes the results would not be good, the edge blender has to be used while the clear is still wet and would end up making the matte clear bleed over onto the gloss clear at the edge instead of a crisp line.

That makes sense. Thanks. Just looks strange.

Now I think i have a plan

Not sure if it can be polished, however

Just my .02 but everyone I know that has used matte clear has commented on how soft it is. Im not sure what brand he used. I`ve painted some stripes on a truck and used the house of kolor clear with their flattening additive and it scratched extremely easy.

Why would you want to polish a matte finish?

well the logic in my mind flows this way.... if its cleared over the matte, then the clear may get scratched/marred- in my mind the clear would be polished to level that marring

NOW I didn`t say I WANTED to polish it, but that I was not sure if it could be polished.

Other aspects I am not sure of regarding this paint-

Does it still need to cure or degass like normal paint?

Should I use Dlux or PBL coating here? or Celeste Dettaglio ? (that`s what I got)

Do NOT polish matte! Don`t even rub it hard. You can make shiny spots that can only be repaired with a repaint.

also, it frightens me to think of how this will look in a few months after his Steam cleaning guy comes and washes it a few times

The line. Total eye sore IMO. A matte wrap would have look way better and probably costed less.

This hood, top of fenders, and top of bumper were wrapped.

his was wrapped...and it was fading in spaces (due to improper care IMO). I am still on the fence if his steam cleaning service guy assisted the degration or not

he was fine with it but he dropped a garage door or something on his hood and punctured the front of it and so he had to get it fixed..he decided to get it repainted this matte clear at that time

And I am taking it upon myself to figure this thing out so it will last the longest and look the best it can for him- because he is HUGE into the show scene and a long time friend of mine as well

I can definitely see the steam damaging the wrap material IMO. Not a big fan of washing with steam for obvious reasons. The matte clear he had applied is really no different then caring for the OEM matte paints, it`s just normal clear coat with a flattening agent added.

The hood looks fine but the stripes are just Ew! What did the owner say about the tape line?

he said it was clear coat (from where they taped it off) like Dieselwrench stated above

it wasn`t a surprise to anyone but ME I think....I find it quite the eyesore personally

but the 1st thing I asked him is WTH happened here? on that white mark top of the hood

probably someone nicked it at the shop or someone else- he`s only had one guy clean it post delivery from shop

and I`ve warned him of the perils of that method of cleaning for over 3 years now

Yeah, no claying the matte either.

MB recommends strong APC, tar remover and VM&P naphtha for difficult stains.
