The world has finite petroleum reserves. Everyone is trending towards much longer intervals and sophisticated on-board oil quality monitoring.

Yep, I'm sure that's the case.
MBz is paying out for some big time engine repairs due to a similar issue....they forgot to tell people in the US that they MUST run syn oil. People were still following the car's computer for oil change intervals which are based upon durable syn lube products but owners were using dino-based oil.

Much cheaper to run synthetics due to longer change intervals, The oil doesn't break down. It just gets dirty. Keep it clean and it goes and goes. I have a F150 with a 351w with 175,000 miles on it that has had 7 oil changes since I bought it new. Approx. cost $504.00 @ $6.00 per qt oil and $15.00 filters

Every one who wants to go with extended oil drains, should follow tom p's example. A person should really check if the oil you choose, can actually handle longer drain intervals with the type of driving you do, by having your used oil sampled. Not all synthetics are created equal and not everyone has the same driving style, and these two factors do make a differance. A few UOA's are much cheaper than rebuilt engines.

Back in the 80's Mobil1 ran a test for 70k miles, only changing filter and toping it off and there was no break down. Honda recommends valvoline.
