What brand/weight oil do you run?

Royal Purple 10W30 late spring/summer/early fall,

Royal Purple 5W30 winter.

It was so cold last night, I had to plug the cars in , in the garage :o

I guess I missed this earlier. If you don't mind me asking, what kind of cars are those that require synthetic oil?

Our '02 BMW 3 series requires synthetic oil if you are going to follow the 15k mile (or 1 year) change intervals.

Both our VW TDis require synthetic oil and have 10k mileage intervals.

My GM car does not require syn oil but I still use it and change the oil at 1.5X factory change interval. The car sits outside so I am happy to have the excellent cold flo characteristics of a syn oil on cold days.

I have done UOA a number of times. It's not an issue going that far when running a robust oil. The commentary from the lab typically says: "oil OK for continued use, sample at next regular interval. No corrective action necessary".

The world has finite petroleum reserves. Everyone is trending towards much longer intervals and sophisticated on-board oil quality monitoring.

There's the answer as to why the GM Mobil 1 factory-fill cars require synthetic oil--the Oil Life Index computer (that computes when to change the oil) is programmed for the properties of synthetic lube!

Yep, I'm sure that's the case.

MBz is paying out for some big time engine repairs due to a similar issue....they forgot to tell people in the US that they MUST run syn oil. People were still following the car's computer for oil change intervals which are based upon durable syn lube products but owners were using dino-based oil.

Much cheaper to run synthetics due to longer change intervals, The oil doesn't break down. It just gets dirty. Keep it clean and it goes and goes. I have a F150 with a 351w with 175,000 miles on it that has had 7 oil changes since I bought it new. Approx. cost $504.00 @ $6.00 per qt oil and $15.00 filters

If I ran dino oil it would have been 35 times @ 5000 mile intervals. $665.oo @ 1.99 per qt oil and $5.00 filters.

Every one who wants to go with extended oil drains, should follow tom p's example. A person should really check if the oil you choose, can actually handle longer drain intervals with the type of driving you do, by having your used oil sampled. Not all synthetics are created equal and not everyone has the same driving style, and these two factors do make a differance. A few UOA's are much cheaper than rebuilt engines.

Unfortunately so did I, and will be tonight also.:(

Back in the 80's Mobil1 ran a test for 70k miles, only changing filter and toping it off and there was no break down. Honda recommends valvoline.
