Wet sand or pad compounding ???

What are the opinions out there..........I know there are many, on the decision to wet sand vs. just compounding with a pad to get out 1500, 2000, 1200 kind of scratches?

They both get rid of, say a 1500 grit scratch by using either method?

My experience is that they take about the same amount of time, yet for some reason I feel I can see much easier (the progress) using a pad and compound. Is the margin of error higher using wet sanding?

Basicly what are your determing factors for the decision to either wet sand out scratches or compound them with a pad/compound.

Cheers,

GREG

Yes I do go through the method of least to greatests. I guess what I'm saying is that after I have done that and I have a series 1500 grit scratches still, I can either take it out with sanding or compound............which decision and why.

remember that the least amount of wetsaanding is more aggressive that the most aggressive polishing. So to answer the question, you should do aggressive polishing before you reach for the sand paper.

Yes, sanding will remove more or your finish faster, but if done correctly, it will do it evenly where compounding won't. There's pros and cons to both and when to use what depends on what you're trying to do. When doing heavy overspray removals or orange peel removals for example, I reach for sandpaper over compound. I feel it's better to sand it off instead of grinding it off. Flatter, straighter looking finish.
