Wash Buckets and Grit Guards

Homer buckets here too as they fit tight and are very easy to get. Must have about 4 around the house now (2 dedicated for washes)

One thing I dislike about the Chemical Guys bucket/grit guards I use is when the grit guard falls out when I dump the water out of the buckets. I wish they were snug enough to stay in the bucket.

Maybe it's for the best, not trapped dirt.

I started with kitty litter buckets, migrated to home depot buckets, and then got some nice ones from the other place in Florida that has the fancy gamma seal lids. I use the HD buckets for wheels. The grit guard fits snuggly in the bottom of both the HD and the OGB (other guys buckets). I now stack 2 grit guards in the rinse buckets so do not need to reach into the bucket as far.

I have the HOMER bucket also from H.D. My grit guard fits like a glove. No complaints. Good example to keep dust out of the bucket. I sometimes wash mine with soap and water, rinse and dry it...but always make sure it is C L E A N so as not to possibly mar/scratch ANY finish.

What's the use of these grit guards? I use a wash-mit and rinse out the mit with water after washing each panel. Grit will settle to the bottom anyway, and it's not like I'm rubbing my wash mit on the bottom of the bucket when I'm re-sudsing it!

When you swish your mitt in the wash bucket it stirs up all of the dirt on the bottom. The GG keeps the water on the bottom from stirring up and letting the dirt get back up into the top of the bucket.

I do not think grit guards are the end all but one of a many best practices to minimize swirls.

The idea is you rub the mitt against the grit guard and the spacing/vanes keeps dirt which can be affected by water movement from getting very high in the bucket. If you have a wash bucket with 5 gallons of water I would guess a grit guard is important than one with with much less water.

Time for me to go get an H.D bucket so I can fit in. :-?

Or go see Mohaummad down at your corner deli for the pickle buckets /:)

I don't even use grit guards Al. I use 8 mits and just keep changing out my wash solution. Usually go through 4+ refills on each wash. I also rinse my mits before they touch the paint again Da Rules!

You do that for every wash? I would think just rinsing out the wash mitt with a hose would be a nice alternative to a second bucket.

Yes, no water police here in Memphis. Its a waste all you want policy here ;)

After I do the wheels, jams and engine. I feel up a bucket, drop my mitts, rinse, then throw 8 mitts onto roof and start washing. Before I put them back in the bucket I let them rest on the cowel then rinse. Probally not for everyone, but it works for me
