Wash after polish to remove dusting?

I have been experimenting on the weekends with my new PC and some poorboys polishes on the hood of my 4runner. I plan to do about 3 cars in the next month or so.

To my question: I noticed that polishing makes a huge mess with all the dried up polish dust all over the car, not to mention any slips onto black plastic parts. Would it be correct to wash the car after polish to reomve all of the dusting before my LSP?

I would guess no because lack of protection on the paint, it may swirl during the wash.

I bought some blue tape, but that was a pain the butt as well, when I took it off, there were lines from I guess where the polish built up and dried.

Any tips or tricks to keep dusting down to a minimum or how to easily remove the dust?

Thanks,

Steve

Last time I polished my V70 with Menzerna PO85RD, I washed in the end with Z7 before I applied Z1/Z5. You'll marr the surface only if your procedure is not correct.

You could try those 3m tact cloths you can get at Wal-Mart or a car parts store. They're in the neighborhood of $1 each or so but they are rather small. Otherwise, if it's too much of a mess, yeah, wash to ensure total clean up.

I had problems with dusting when I used to apply too much polish to each panel (before I found Autopia). I use much less product now and this problem have reduced quite considerably.

I've used a number of polishes and found no problems with dusting, Meg's #80, VM, SSR1 and AG Super Resin Polish (the dustiest polish I've used).

If I have any slight dusting, I remove it with a spritz of QD on a MF towel, rather than washing the car down again.

Others may have different techniques, but that is what works for me.

Thanks for the replies, I am not using a ton of polish, it really start by the second panel, then I have dust everywhere.

Today I used SSR1 with a white pad on speed 6, worked it really good, maybe I should slow the speed down?

Most dusting that I have expierenced come from the more aggressive polishes like Mernerna IP and Powergloss (Especially Power Gloss) and Poorboys SSR2.5. ITs pretty much the abrasives causing the dust i believe. Keeping the pad moist when polishing I have found reduces the dust quite a bit but doesnt ELIMINATE it. Washing the vehichle after a good polishing is a good idea. I did that on the last detail I did, it gets rid of all the dust, and it prepares the surface for the LSP.

If it is dusting alot, try using more polish.

Some people "prime" their pads before the initial polish.

From the limited polishes i have used, speed 6 causes alot of dusting.

I like to work the polish on a max of speed 5. DACP ect... i dont use on a higher setting than 5.
