VW golf clear marred...confuddled

I don't know what happened but I can't seem to get this marring out of my vw golf's clear coat, maybe I'm being much too anal. I have a metabo rotary, pc 7424, edge 2000 pads, Optimum Polish and compound, ssr 3, 2.5, 1, menzerna IP. I just stopped trying cuz the optimum polish and any pad combo wasn't working, I started with a green pad at 1500rpm on the rotary, didn't make a dent...no extra marring not much removed. Tried a pass with the PC on 5.5 and some opt pol., no better, moved to a yellow pad on PC no luck. Should I try the optimum compound on the rotary, PC? I've never had such a problem removing marring, I feel like I became a total n00b today. Could it be the sunlight? maybe being overzealous and working too large a section? I wonder if the edge 2000 pads just aren't for me, I use to use pads from properautocare, but switched to edge 2000 for easy of centering. It's driving me nuts, so any help is appreciated.

I do have to say I love how easily optimum polish wipe's off.

Well I finally cooled off and went out there determined, I think my method was flawed, I was using a lil too much product and not the correct product for the job. The marring looks slight but the paint is hard, so I stepped up to optimum compound at setting 2 on the metabo with a green pad. i worked in 2x2' areas. Once I was done with the compound I got out the PC and used a white pad and Opt polish, went over the hood in 1/4 sections. Looks much better afterwards, but not perfect. I think there's been too much gravel pitting to get the flawless finish I want, maybe a fine wetsanding would get it closer, but for now I'll live with it.

I think I was just impatient and being very picky about how it came out, the car was bought in June 2004 and has 54k mile's on it, 70% hwy...so it's got it's share of gravel erosion.

Sounds like you got a handle on the problem. The clear on many VWs is just as hard as the paint on Auids, and can take some seemingly extreme measures to correct.

And yeah, sometimes it can take a lot of time do work hard paints. Tough to do unless you've set aside plenty of hours for it.

From VW owner to another - I feel your pain :furious:

There’s something finicky about Audi/VW clear coat . . . it’s as easy to mar, as it is tough. I recently added another VW to the family (Imola Yellow GTI 20th AE) and it was very frustrating to say the least. The prior owner frequented a local autowash and the finish was littered with heavy swirls. I’m completely miffed by the countless hours I’ve spent leveling and polishing the paint to back to its original glass-like finish. After using various pad combinations and light compounds, I said enough is enough and dropped the wool pad with Menzerna’s PG. Done.

The problem now is removing scratches from the glass

I would recommend that you add an Optimum Black Lambs Wool pad to your pas collection. It can help in these situations. It will not leave you with lots of heavy swirls to remove just some light ones.
