UPP, BF, Zaino??

Hi Guys,

After about an hour of searching and reading and more searching and reading, and then reading at premiumauto I still cannot tell what would be the best sealant for my black car.

Have you guys tried UPP, BF, Poorboys and Klasse on black cars?

What do you guys find works best on a black car? I'm looking for the depth and wetness carnauba gives you and the durability of Zaino. I have Zaino, but havent tried it out yet because I'm scared to death that it'll give me that plasticy look. Maybe I'll like the plasticy look?

Well anyhow please let me know what you guys think!!

I don't think there's going to be much difference between the good products so I use Poorboys because Steve posts here and is a good guy and is a small businessman trying to make a living.

Personally speaking, and from experience....

I, without hesitation, use BF II. Its difficult for some users, and I think it has to do with its makeup, its composition. It leaves streaks, hazing, whatever you want to call it. Some get it with the polish, some get it with the protectant. These "problems" can and are usually eliminated with QD'ing the car between polish and sealant. What I normally do is park the car in the sun for a few moments, just to heat the surface, rejuvinate the oils. Then hit it with a MF, and the problem has removed itself, least thats my scenario. Platinum, IMO, leaves the same exact problems, to the a way lesser degree, and the shine is comporable to BF II.

The color, clarity and depth, and protection, are exactly what I m looking for on dark colored cars. I think BF has a slight edge in those areas mentioned. I have Poorboys items ordered, and am looking forward to using them. As for Zaino, I havent used it, nor do I care to, only due to the whole process ....Ive heard wonderful things about it, but dont have that time when doing clients cars.....

Zaino on a black car will not look "plasticy".....

Here's mine.

Well, based on your choices (all of which are fine products) the only ones that fit what you want in my opinion would be UPP or BF. Klasse is too "polished rock" shiney. This is an example of Klasse on white. I know its not black, but it gives you an idea of what I'm talking about.

Blackfire and Platinum both provide a great deep wet look that looks like Zaino or Klasse with a good carnauba topper or something. BF and UPP do it without the carnauba though.

Zaino may be a good choice too, but it just depends on what you like. I haven't got any pictures of Zaino from my experience with it yet because I haven't had a chance to use it just yet. I'm hoping to start with that project on Saturday. You'll find plenty of people who will suggest Zaino because its a good product. The plasticy look is only something I see when I see it on any other color than black. Black looks good no matter what you use on it. I've got some goat urine you are welcome to try if you want to test that theory. ;)

Goat Urine u say? hahaha no thank you

Thanks for all the help guys.

I do have some Zaino and I just tested it out today on a little section and I have to say that I like the glaze, S100 route better.

It gave me a rippling wet look instead of a mirrorlike shine Zaino gave.

Can I layer Mothers Sealer/Glaze? will that help it look more "wet"?

I still have to get a PC! Deanski was nice enough to send me some samples of DACP, Menzerna and PIII MG. Thanks Dean!!! Talk about a great packer. Peanuts and all.

Total agreement with Jngr..........Ya had to bring up the "Goat urine" again didnt ya.......8:52 Sat morning and I havent even had coffee......sheeeeesh!!

Make that Friday morning.....

I've tried the products you mention above on black and the absolute best look on my black car is P21S carnuaba. But since you're looking for durability also, I would suggest doing the Klasse + P21S (or Souveran) combo.

But is durability really that important to you? I live in the LA area like you and since I'm able to detail year-round, the 1-2 months durability of carnauba wouldn't be a problem for me.

At least with the newer version of Z-5(swirl filler) you get a wetter look than Z-2 but not as reflective. Z-5 does not give as wet a look as Platinum would though. Z-2 gives the most reflective shine you will ever witness on a black vehicle and lasts the longest in my opinion. If you are not into a super shine but a total wet look and decent protection, the best way I found is,

1. Meguiars Hand Polish or Meguiars Swirl Remover(Most auto stores sell this version).

2. Meguiars Hand Glaze or Show Car Glaze(Most auto stores sell this version).

3. Platinum

The glaze will stop the Platinum from properly bonding to the paint, but should still last you at least a month. But with the glaze and Platinum together your paint will look super wet and feel super slick.

I'm a Zaino fan. Looks are subjective (most of it is in the mind), but when it comes to durability, slickness, and beading, Zaino is obviously the best in those categories.

No need to worry. Platinum doesn't crosslink anyway, so the glaze is fine. Their own pre-cleaner is oily.

BF: Low-solvent content, beads heavily for up to a month, is smeary and oily

UPP: Haven't tried recent version. I hear it's very similar to BF

Poorboys EX: Haven't tried. Mixed reviews, but for sure it's not a true synthetic sealant despite it's name

Klasse: Good, proven product. Not trouble-free and requires care during application

The recent version of UPP is quite different from BF. BF still streaks like a madman and UPP doesn't have that problem. The dust attraction issue is non existent with UPP as well. BF still draws it in.

Just my experience/two cents. I put a single coat of BF II on all the glass on my car about 3 months ago. It still beads like crazy. I would imagine it sticks to paint even better as that's what it is designed for (though I couldn't go 3 months without waxing my car...). I think whether you find it smeary/oily will depend on many factors. I have never noticed it to still be smeary after a car wash. While it means your car might not look its best for a few days (or however long you go before washing your car), in Autopian terms it isn't a very big shortcoming. Most of us are willing to do unusual things to get the most from the products we enjoy.

I dunno. I was one of the first to praise Blackfire for being a breakthrough when it first came out. I still love the stuff. Its just a little more finish work that sometimes is harder to get perfect than other products. The look is worth the effort. The dust isn't worth it, but the look is. I just slap a layer or two of carnauba on top and the dust problem is fixed. :bow to Blackfire still. You gotta admit, it does get a bit streaky unless the conditions are just right. Its just a funny quirk of the product. Zaino requires a chemistry degree, SG requires X-Ray vision to see where it hazed, BF needs a little extra time to take care of the streaks, UPP sometimes needs a little extra time for streaks too. They all have their little things you have to get used to. I'll bet if I used BF II as much as I used UPP or SG then I wouldn't have a problem with streaks either.

I used Zaino once but found it to be too much work. I have tried Blackfire 2 on two different times and it streaked both times.

I'm now looking at either UPP or Poorboys EX...what does everyone think? EX is not a polymer so I am wondering if it would hold up as well. I also have Klasse SG I plan to try but the reviews on it seem to be 50/50...a lot of people have streaking issues with it. And I don't know how long it lasts either...

EX will probably be the easiest to use, but I have found durability not to be quite up to par with PUPP or Klasse. EX produces great results as does Zaino, BF, or Klasse.

phareous- Can't really comment on PUPP or EX, but I CAN tell you that *I* find SG *VERY* easy to use. A few layers of it last for MANY months and provide what is almost a "coating" to your paint, which can serve as a sacrificial layer (bugs, bird bombs, etc.). If you have trouble seeing the SG during removal, just fog the surface with your breath. Might not be the "look" you're after, but it sure does protect the paint.

As Jngrbrdman said, a LOT of it is just having experience working the particular product.
