Treating myself to a new watch... help me pick which one to get.

^^ no, I think maybe you're right.

I bought this watch from Overstock, and absolutely love it. It was my first "real" watch... a change from the $10 cheapo watches that I had been wearing. I absolutely love the chronograph feature... I'm into mechanical things so my next step will probably be an automatic :)

http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?PAGE=PROFRAME&PROD_ID=1495249

I bought it for about $110, and I think it was also $1 shipping. I checked back a few days later and it was about $150! I'm glad I bought it when I did...

BTW, to the OP, take your time, and feel free to spend a little extra money if you can. Buy a nicer, more expensive watch rather than a cheaper watch - you'll thank yourself. Also, I'd skip Fossils ;).

I'm ready to upgrade to something a little nicer than my Fossil, but I have to say that it's been a great watch that does what it's designed to do. We can all sit here and debate how accurate our second hands are, but come on, I don't think anyone is REALLY keeping track of that. If you say you do you need a hobby.

I'm liking the looks of the Seiko stainless diver's watch automatic.

I;ve had my Tag for 3 years now. I set it to the atomic clock and it loses about 1 secind a month. Not a big deal.

The nice thing with a quality watch is that it will continue to look good for years. I wear mine daily and it doesn't have a single scratch on it, and I'm not nice to my hands and arms. The crystal on my Tag is insanely strong. I will also say that I have yet to replace the baterry after three years. Same goes for my wife's Tag which bought at the same time.

Save up a few bucks and get out of the Fossil watches and into the nice stuff. Worth every penny.

Yea I'm not trying to say they're trash watches; its just that when you are willing to spend a lot of time researching watches (and wanting to spend a bit of money), there are some nice options out there that are "better" (IMHO) than Fossil watches can offer.

Agree 100%....And, if you buy a fine quality automatic from Omega, Tag, Ulysse Nardin(my personal favorite)....you can make almost all of your money back upon resale... :2thumbs:

As a watch purist, all my watches must be autos, no quartz, no Kenetic and no nonsense.

You can get a good auto movement like their 7S26 and 7S36 from Seiko, Invicta, Orient for under $100. Omega and Rolex movements are off the shelf Swiss ETA or Valjoux movements that don't cost more than $200, you just pay for the prestige of the brand and the name.

My picks are;

High End:

Sinn / Bell&Ross

Doxa

Kolbold

Grand Seiko

Daily beaters:

Seiko

Orient

Citizen

Invicta

Poljot

Tissot

O&W

Are you on Timezone, Ed??

I love being on that forum, except when looking at OTHER peoples' A. Langes and Pateks!!

I agree with you except for the 'off the shelf' movt part. Rolex makes their own movements, like Seiko, except for their chronographs, I believe, which are Valjoux. Also, ETA movts come in different grades, the cheapest movts going to Swatch and the mid-high end movts to Omega...the finishing and accuracy can vary greatly depending on what grade it is.

I'm not sure he's looking for a watch in Grand Seiko territory, just going by the ESQs he's considering. Sinn is a very good watch for the $$....I love their 756 Diapal...:)

I've always liked the Sinn's as well. Never got around to buying one, but have heard great things about them.

I used to browse the TimeZone forums a few years back when I was really into watches. Fortunately the watch-collecting madness stopped before I purchased a tourbillon or some other insanely expensive watch.

Has anyone seen, tried, or own the new Seiko Springdrive watches? They look pretty neat to me or am I missing something? http://www.seikospringdrive.com Do you think this is a quality movement?

You guys have got me wanting a new watch too, and now the hunt begins! lol ;)

Thanks,

Mike :)

They are very nice movements. I believe they use a different type of escapement than regular autos, somehow dealing with a spring...

People I've talked to who have one say they are very, very accurate(almost quartzlike) and it is quite mesmerizing to see the second hand literally sweep(no little incremental 'steps', just a fluid motion)... :xyxthumbs

ROLEX, if you're gonna do it, go all the way man... :bolt

:D I can only wish... I have 2 expensive hobbies, cars that go fast and detailing. If I sold my 35th Anniversary SS I could maybe buy a Rolex... maybe 2. If a Rolex can give me the adrenaline rush my Camaro does when I lift the front tires... Id be all over it. :heelclick

Cool, thx for the reply. That's what I've been reading about the SDs, that they are pretty neat to see in action, but I didn't realize they were going for so much $. hehe

While we're all on the whole watch subject, does anyone have some good sources for purchasing nice watches online? It seems TimeZone refrains from this bigtime, and it's very hush hush there. Where are the better places to buy online? I have bought from ClassyBrand in the past and they were good, but I think I've found at least 1-2 more that I'm strongly considering buying my wife a watch from for a Christmas gift.

Thanks,

Mike :)

There's a video about the movement on the website, if you've seen it. It's quite amazing, really. I find these springdrive watches amazing... I would love to have one! Unfortunately I believe the prices is somewhere around $5k (from when I last looked), so it is... well, a "little" out of my range for now :o

Movado has gone through a few ownership changes, and as far as I understand, quality wasn't their top priority, money was...

I have no update on their quality right now at this moment, but I know people with ESQs that have been nice and trouble-free and others whose minute hand fell off and one whose crown didn't work at all....

It just sounds like taking a risk at a nice watch or a junk one. And when I'm spending money on a watch, I expect quality control to be a little higher... :up

That's all...I'm a big fan of the Swatch Group in general...they mostly use proven, reliable ETA movements(also a Swatch co.), and they have always produced excellent quality timepieces at reasonable prices, IMHO.

Citizen and Seiko also make very good quality watches for not a lot of money...

I am also like swatch group....6 month ago i bought TISSOT LE LOCLE, and I like it a lot.

I also have in my collection ORIENT (automatic), and SWI (quartz). My next "target" will be OMEGA (automatic).

By the way...I use to be a watch repairer for 6 years, but any more! :nixweiss
