Treating myself to a new watch... help me pick which one to get.

Heres another interesting read about comparing an under $200 Seiko diver against a $2000 Omega SeaMaster:

Ed,

The link doesn't work and it appears the site no longer exists. Therefore, can you provide a cliff notes version of the article. I'd be really really interested to read a comparison between the Seiko and Omego. Tell me the Seiko won for $200! :D

While Im here... where do you guys buy watches online? There are SOOOOO many places and its hard to decide which to buy from.

Thanks...

I can vouch for classybrand.com as being good. Also, check out PrincetonWatches.com and bluedial.com as well as Overstock.com

You can get prices much better than what your department store will charge (typically MSRP)!

Mike

Maybe I can work out a trade deal... watches for details.

"Watches for details," sounds like a pretty darn good idea to me! ;) And thanks for the kind words on my pieces. Glad I could share.

As for where I've been getting my Asian timepieces, I travel to Asia a few times a year and always keep a look-out for anything interesting. That having been said, there is a small cadre of dealers that I have personally done business with over the years and I always keep going back to them. I have no personal involvement with them, except to say that I am a most happy customer and continue to do business with them whenever possible. The first is Wayne's Watch World. The owner is a Professor of Entymology and is considered one of the world's authority on, well, bugs and roaches. He also owns the Seiko/Citizen Watch Forum The other is HIGUCHI-INC, owned and run by Katsuhisa Higuchi in Japan. This guy is my source for stuff that is Japan-market only. He speaks English and he's an only an email inquiry away. Now, I have no problems in buying watches sight unseen (well, maybe from looking at some catalog photos on the Internet), but some people like to do the touchy-feely thing and this may not be too comfortable for them. Still, the sellers are wonderfully-reliable.

Mike, the link may be dead, but I did find the article cached on Google's servers. The pics are missing though, but the text is intact. Link is here - www.chronoguy.com/horology/svo/+omega+vs+seiko&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1]Seiko vs Omega[/url]

Welp.. I just found the Citizen Calibre 5700 online for $195 and free shipping... I may be biting the bullet on this one. :)

Darn! I just sold this one for $110 w/the leather strap I added:

I liked it a lot, except I needed some $$ to buy the Samurai....

That's a nice watch, but I'm sorry...there is no watch worth more than maybe a hundred bucks. They all do the SAME THING.

Well I think that's like saying there's no difference between a Kia and a Ferrari. It's all about what's inside :2thumbs:

True but I only need my watch to go from 0-60 in one time 60 seconds :) I guess I'll just stick with getting a Kenneth Cole watch and call it good. I can't afford these watches :shocked you playas haha

Right when I thought I had it nailed down... I find another that catches my eye.

Seiko Premier Perpetual Calendar. Only drawback to this one is its battery opperated.. but it is a really good looking watch.

Im at a standstill on this one... Im too new to this and I dont know if its worth it to go with a battery operated Seiko?.?.?.? :help: :help: :help:

Why does the Seiko website suck so bad? I want to see all of the watches they make, but all they want to show you is the kinetic stuff. :nixweiss

Cause they figure most North Americans and Europeans are too lazy to wind or give their watches a workout. Most of the exotic mechanicals are in the asian market only.

Well... I decided it would be best to order a more expensive watch at a later date.

So I ordered a Seiko Superior to tie me over until then.

It comes with the Cal. 7S36, 23 Jewel movement and a Sapphire Crystal... so it is a little higher end than the regular 5's.

Nice! I just went ahead and ordered that Seiko Premier I posted above.

I now need some help finding a couple Seiko 5 watches.... having a hard time locating them.

and

Thanks!

What's the word on Wenger watches?

Also, how about buying watches on Ebay? I found a really nice Tissot that I think my wife would like. The price is outrageously good, but it's in Singapore. :nervous2: I think I know the answer to my own question...caveat emptor.

AFAIK, Wenger isn't that well thought of among the watch community. I think that is simply because there are other choices available, for the same prices, at higher quality (namely Seiko 5s, Orient, Invicta, etc).

I *really* like Tissots, but there is no way I would risk an overseas transaction for one. Classybrand.com is far more reputable and has pretty good prices on Tissots. Can't really find better prices, without going to a really shady/risky market, like Ebay. For lower quality watches, I might risk it, but for anything nice, no way! The phrase "buying the seller" definitely applies to nicer items, like watches. I am wanting a particular Tissot Le Locle right now very badly!

Man do I have a nice little collection going right now.. thanks to everyones advice.

As far as overseas ordering... the first Seiko 5 that I ordered was from bodying.com. They are in Malaysia and I was nervous about ordering. However, it was a VERY smooth transaction, I couldnt believe the package arrived so fast and I had daily shipping updates emailed to me which was comforting. The only thing is... if you look around you can find Seiko 5s within the US for the same prices or on par with at least. The last couple watches I ordered were from bluedial.com which has been a pleasant experience too.. and they are out of TX.

I had a Wenger Auto, it was a nice watch, ETA automatic movement, beautiful fit and finish, just got bored of it. They are a bit overpriced when compared to Seiko and Citizen, but IMO their quality is above Orient (the lower line) and the hit and miss quality of Invicta.

People in Singapore and Hong Kong are more watch crazy than many of us Autopians, if the guy has strong feedback and you aren't worried about having to return the watch for a warranty issue. I had a huge hassle returning my Tissot to an unauthorized dealer for some water leakage issues. What a PITA. Took two months to get the watch back, glad I had plenty of others to wear.:chuckle:
