100yo race car

New member
Hi all,

YEP .. I am new here.

Since my 10ft long 4 cylinder, 8 litre 100+ year old race car has basically NO body... just a HUGE brass/copper radiator at front, a timber fire wall, a seat and French Oak timber frame, steel plate re-enforced; and 3ft+ diameter Hickory wood spoked steel rimed rubber wheels driven by big steel chains.... I not sure just how much detailing I will be able to do to it, once it rebuilt.

mind you engine and running gear has heaps of brass and copper.

Anyways I leant today, from scaning posts, quite a bit that will go well in doing some detailing on my 1999 Saab 9.5 wagon. Had never heard about "claying".

My Saab need a lot of cleaning in the wagon area and general interior. Some stains on interior carpets and scuffing on plastic moldings

Now on to the important reason for my joining....

I have a friends almost 12 yo son whom is interested in doing car detailing, striping and maybe "panel art" for a living ...also thinks he wants to fit OR at least design car after maket modifications.. ie adding steering wheels, NOS, neons, spoilers, skirts etc.

His mum thought there maybe some cool software to allow one to do this .. I guess like 'police indenti kit' or 'cosmetic surgery' software but i cannot see such things.

I told him its not just about just putting "kool looking" parts on a car. If they detract from its safety or performance (ie corrupt its fuel economy considering how expensive petrol is now) then he needs to understand such issues. Also he should learn some form of Auto engineering if he wanted to so such mods.

Patrick wants to know what sort of schooling he should do and should he wait and finish High School (( year 12 in Australia .. next level is university or College))

Should he do a motor mechancs course, or graphic arts subjects or ????

Also what about the long term peronal health hazards of cleaning chemical etc.

I wonder if there would be a ongoing living it this, especially during times of tight economy.

I am interested in comment re patricks ambitions please.

Its good to see such open and helpful people on here.. Thanks in advance.

point of note re me..
I am a motor mechanic ( higher technician) by base trade with advanced diesel training via Caterpillar, and university engineer quals as well.

:welcome

I would love to see a pic of that race car

For your friends 12yo, he is never too young to start learning the skills of detailing.
If he is interested is learning about detailing let him come and visit here, do some reading and ask some questions, there are plenty of people here that are glad to help. Then he can see in what direction he wants to go in.

P.S.
Definatly clay the Saab, you won't believe the difference :D

Hi, Thanks for replying to the post. I am Patrick's mum. Just one slight problem about letting him come see you and learn....We live in Australia. :LOLOL He is excellent at using Photo Shop, out done me!! Would you know of any programmes we can download or buy which have any further advanced techniques on it. Do you think he'd need a Graphics Arts course to do, he is thinking of doing the designs then air-brushing onto the real car. He's interested in the design aspects of spoilers, rims, etc. So any programme that helps him do those mods too would be of a great help.

My friend will post a pic for you later on.

when I refer to come and see us, I am referring to visiting our online community :lol
If Patrick is already proficient in using PS and he is looking into more of a design aspect, the may want to start learning Autocad or other 3D rendering software.

Good luck

You have a PM

If he's interested in the mechanical aspect of cars he can go to school or Mechanical Engineering. It covers everything that could be considered a mechanical system. If he's interested in designing exteriors then graphic design is for him, his school should have more information on possible career paths if he wants it, he should ask.
