Sun gun vs halogen work lights...

Hi everyone, wanted to know if anyone had any experience using a sun gun vs halogen work light in detecting swirls and scratches. Please list the pro's and con's of both and which one you would use as your professional choice. Thanks

I see some using the sun gun, but they are quite expensive, I use halogens, and I'm able to see everything fine. I may have to pick it up every now and then, just be careful because they get super hot. I guess a sun gun would be nice to have, but just to much for my budget.

How would the 10,000 candle power rechargable flashlights do vs the sun gun? I see them at Pep Boys for like 9.99?

You might try the Brinkmann Dual Xeon light available at Pep Boys for $29.99 or directly from Brinkmann.com. For the price it's darn good.

I've used halo for some time now and love the them. One thing that I have really looked at is your surrounding that you detail in. My garage is sheet rocked and painted white on all but one side. The painted sides get much better clarity in the paint than the non-sheet rocked side. Even with the halos that I can move around the car.

I bought a Binkman but after using it once I have not used it again.
I Installed a combination of Fluorescent Incandescent and halogen lights that are mounted on the wall suspended from the ceiling plus 2 dual head 1000 watt halogens on potable stands.

They total up to 7000 watts.
All lights can be aimed but when you get them adjusted all you need to do is park in the right spot.

I can look at I car in the sun and it looks good but pull it into my shop and you can see scratches and swirls.
Halogen lights are brutal and if I can make it look good in the shop I know that when I back it out into the sun light it will look awesome.

i use a 10 dollar 1000000 candle power light at home depot rechargeable for 10 bucks works good enough for me

Thanks for the link pockets, they seem like they would do the trick. At that price you can't go wrong. You could also use it for a black out. It says nothing about candle power though, it's a halogen light.

I'm interested in this as well. I wanna find something under 20bucks or around there that I can just use to see swirls in the paint.

just a thought... How able is a 55watt halogen Ryobi spot light in detecting swirls when people are using 500-1500 watt halogens? I have a 250 watt single plug in halogen and I hardly use it becuase it just doesn't seem to have enough power to truly uncover most of the swirls IMO.

The $400 dollars sun guns 3m sells is just a 35-50wattbulb Ina cordless drill body, approx 12volts. The bulbs are available at hardware stores less than 3 dollars. Then, just sacrifice some cheap drill.

Their all fine, a sun gun is mean't for color matching. It's able to defect more colors aka a higher CRI. It's abilities don't really help a detailer, it's mean't for a painter.
