Suggestions for first pads

The velcro seems to fit the backing plate perfectly. Is that a problem with these pads? I am willing to try all kinds of pads, but I'm gonna do a 25' black boat to start, so I figure I may destroy one or two.

Do you mean that the diameter of the Velcro is the same diameter, or just slightly larger, than the 5" backing plate? If so they be the old style pads. The old style Velcro was about 12.5cm in diameter and the new style is 15.5cm.

What you may run into is a problem others have had where (when pressure is applied) the backing plate will âہ“cookie cutâ€Â into the pad. If you have this problem contact LC (bufferman71) and they will exchange them for you. Not everyone has that problem so donâ€â„¢t get overly concerned. I have an old style orange LC pad that has held up fine.

Im not saying anything else.

Ok, I understand, I know why they were %40 off. They stink.

I don't really mean they are bad, I kind of bought them as trial bang up pads, I have a lot of things I want to polish, that I may not want to use an expensive high quality pad on.

That's a rather harsh statement to make if you haven't even used them yet. If youâ€â„¢ve compared them to other pads or see flaws that you donâ€â„¢t like then critique them. But using a blanket statement like âہ“they stinkâ€Â provides no useful information and is unfair to both the manufacturer and other members looking for helpful data on pad selection.

The LC are not bad pads. The white pad you have has been a "basic" polish pad that many members have used for quite some time. The orange pad is the typical orange foam and also works quite well. I can't comment on the LC grey because I haven't used that exact pad, but I don't see why it wouldn't be comparable to any of the other grey finish pads.

Like LSPâ€â„¢s, the choice of pad manufacturer, size, and design pretty much boils down to personal preference and what works best for you. Some members complain about a particular pad falling apart, while others have used the same pad for months w/o any problems.

The only issues I've heard about is the Velcro that some have had problems with (but LC will replace those if needed), and some like the VC design while others don't. I believe the white pad that Autopia sold is a flat pad, not VC like the other two.

I've used a wide variety of pads from various manufacturers and haven't really had issues with any of them. I guess my favorite pad would be the Meg's (polish and finish) and Excel Detail's Propel pads because I personally prefer flat pads. Between the two I now order Propel pads because you canâ€â„¢t beat the price, theyâ€â„¢re a quality pad, and the service from Excel Detail is excellent.

I understand, I retract my "they stink" statement, it was unfair. When I read my post this morning, I realized I must have been tired and grumpy last night to make such an ignorant statement.

Thank you for the advice on the pads, and taking the time to put me back in place. I'll let you know how the pads work out.

Is this the problem with the LC pads? I am not sure what to do. I'll just buy new pads if it was my fault.

Flexible Backing Plates:

To centre a foam pad on the PC, set it upside down with the Velcro backing plate facing up (this is easier if the side handle is attached). Using the tips of your fingers as spacers against the edges of the backing plate. You can centre it with near perfection most of the time.

Steve, what size is your backing plate in relation to the Velcro? Does the Velcro extend past the backing plate, or does the BP extend past the Velcro or right up to the edge?

It looks like the typical "cookie-cutting" problem (Velcro too small or BP too large), except this looks to be right at the edge of the Velcro.

The old style Velcro was about 12.5cm in diameter and the new style is 15.5cm. If you're using a 5" backing plate and the Velcro is 12.5cm in diameter I'd contact the vendor or mfg for replacement pads with the larger diameter Velcro.

John-

The plate is 5". It seems to fit perfectly, it does not hang over the edge of the velcro on the pad. I did contact Bufferman71, he said to contact the vender? I am not sure what to do? I would like to get some more pads anyway. Another Orange, Yellow cutting and a few more polishing, as I knew I would really screw up a white one doing our boat, it is completly black now, don't know if I should use it for anything else other than the boat.

Where do you get the ecel pads?

Thanks,

Steve

Sounds like the old (smaller diameter Velcro). Since Autopia doesn't stock LC pads anymore (I think you got them in the garage sale?), I don't know that you'd get a newer style pad from them, wouldn't hurt to ask.

I think since LC mfg's the pads they should swap them out for the newer style, but it sounds like they want you to go back to the vendor instead.

I have read threads about problems with Edge pads and the mfg was happy to do a swap for their newer (improved) style pads. I guess different mfg's have different policies.

The Excel Detail pads (Propel) are available here:
