Suggestions for first pads

http://www.coastaltool.com/cgi-bin/...coastest+bhyr2729ff940294+PORT7424+1104720488

For that price, and the 6" counterweight, it seems like a no brainer to pick it up. I want to get one, and learn it, then get around to making some money with it this summer, use the rest of the colder weather to practice on my cars, the spring on friends and to get the idea out there, then summer to get the money.

I was wondering though, what would go for reccomendations for a set of pads to get, I don't need the highest quality craziest pads around, just something to start off with.

For products I will be starting with, I have some Klasse (said like Classy?) AIO/SG and also some Einzette UPP/PP and I want to pick up some of their MP (I believe this is a little bit 'finer'/less harsh then the other two, is that correct?).

I figure I will need a couple pads for each product, some cutting pads, for things like swirl/defect removal, and some polishing pads, some finishing pads? I'm not quite sure, but I know there are different types, for different intentions.

More informations about different types of pads, and different ones that are reccomended for learning a PC with would be awesome, if there is such a thing. I guess just pads that aren't too aggresive, and will last me a little while are what I am looking for.

A package would be awesome, like a complete set, as upposed to a pad here and a pad there, links would be even better.

Maybe this link can help you out a little

There are tons of websites with awesome information. If I can find all my sources ill post.

As far as the PC itself, I suggest buying a PC locally at Lowes for I think 100 now. That would avoid shipping (but prolly make up with taxes) but you wouldnt have to wait for it!

I would then say for the pads buy a kit from an online vendor such as Autopia Store/Premium Auto Care/Excel Detail/ many many others

They are all similar in price.. ranging from 7.5-10 or so bucks a piece. I would say that you need probably 1-2 cutting, 2-3 polishing, 1-2 finishing.

I know someone has got some good Porter Cable Pad Links as there are tons out there.

Here are the links to some of the packages

You can order a good set of pads and backing plate from Excel Detail. Start with the kit that CutNAction has a link to:

http://www.prestostore.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?ref=exceldetail&ct=&pd=97914&pg=14145

Then add something like two green pads (polishing), a yellow pad (med cut), and an orange (light cut/polishing) pad. All seven pads and backing plate will only run about $60, but youâ€â„¢ll have a nice range of pads to use and an extra one of most if you switch to a different product during a detail. Between the kit and the extra pads you'll have:

1- Yellow Medium Cutting pad

1- Orange (light cut/polish) pad

2- Green polish pads

2- Blue Light Polishing pads

1- Gray finishing pads

1- 5" Backing Plate

You can adjust the number of pads depending of the products you're going to use, but you won't beat $60 for a pad kit like that!

BTW, CutNAction has provided some good links!

I agree on the Excel pads first. Very nice set of starter pads without spending the dough!

I just yesterday got to try out the new green pad. I am highly impressed with it. The structure and durability seems solid.

I never really use my finishing pad because I do most waxes/sealants by hand. But 1 does not hurt for every now and then.

I would say most definitely get at least 2 polishing, i would purchase 2 lite cutting, and 1 med cut.

I dont know how you can beat 60 bucks for 6 pads plus a backing plate! Not to mention his shipping return policy (you pay the exact shipping charges and they refund you the money if you paid too much). I know I rant over excel detail a lot but its because its one business ive had the most success with. All other vendors are awesome as well, ive never had 1 problem with anyone.

Your in good hands Unsane.

A constant pressure foam pad, this is essentially a flat pad which uses a patented technology layer of engineered, instant rebound foam between the pad and the backing plate to absorb off-axis movements while keeping the pressure of the pad on the surface constant. It allows even beginners to achieve professional-like results, the curved 6- inch pads outer edge makes transitioning seams and uneven panel breaks easier and the concave "dish" in the centre of the pad reduces product splatter, and gives the operator greater pad control. They are very easy to control, and forgiving of less-than-perfect technique.

I think the Lake Country constant pressure pad are about as easy as you can get to start with. The 6 inch pads work better with a five inch backing plate in my opinion. They are almost idiot proof as my 16 year old son uses them

Is there any way this pad could work with a non-rotary buffer ? I have an orbital buffer which i normally attach pads with velcro.

Got a lot of faith in you son there eh???

UnsanePyro I'm glad you asked this 'cause I had the excat same question about pads and I have pretty much the same plan you do to try and make a littl cash this summer!

Good luck to you!:xyxthumbs

"They are almost idiot proof "

I was going to go with that as opposed to "They are very easy to control, and forgiving of less-than-perfect technique. "

"Class-eh" or "classe-uh" (German pronunciation for German product.

If using the Klasse twins, I'd get the "pro" version of the 1Z MP. It comes in a round, 1-liter can and is a little harder to find. Costs a bit more, but worth it IMO. Less wax (good, as the AIO will just clean it off anyhow) and a little more abrasive (also good, the regular MP is so mild it's almost nonabrasive).

Another approach would be to just get 3M PI-III RC (05933) and PI-III MG (05937) which will handle almost anything you can do by PC. This combo won't tackle the sort of marring that 1Z UP will fix though.

I can't speak of 3M PI-III RC (05933) that Accumulator is recommending, but I know with 3M PI-II RC (39002) it will leave slight marring on the surface after you use it to remove a defect.

The marring will require a finer polish for removal.

Just to confirm, these pads from Exceldetail are the ones that connect to a velcro backing plate, correct?

I need to order a few more pads, and they seem to have great prices and good reviews.

Thanks

I am going to place an order for some of the ExcelDetail pads. What pads would you recommend for the application of the following products:

Pinnacle Swirl Remover -> Green Light Cut Pad?

Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant -> Grey Finishing Pad as well?

Pinnacle Signature Series Wax -> Grey Finishing Pad?

Thanks

Meguiar's has a nice package with 2 polishing pads and one finishing pad for $24.99:

They also have the same but with a backing plate included for $32.99:

I think these are nice if you are getting the first bunch of stuff.

Yes, that's a good starting point. You may want to order more than one green pad and possibly an orange pad if you run into some tougher defects and go to a more aggressive polish.

I say definitely order another green pad. I finally had a chance to use the green pad the other day and thats my "go-to" pad for now on. I have my yellow pad sitting around that I havent got the chance to use yet, but the green pad did a nice job so I may not get to use it anytime soon:)

CutNAction: FYI, Patrick is now selling an orange pad that would be good to use before hitting it with the yellow. I think he just added it in the last few days.

Yea I saw that as well. What exactly is the purpose of the orange pad..im a bit confused?

I've got like 4 polishing pads that I dont know if Im going to even use anymore because the green one is now my go to one.
