Storage Cabinet Heater

JimS

Adopt a shelter pet!
In my unheated garage I have a big wood storage cabinet (6ft high, 2 feet deep, 2 1/2 ft wide) where I keep my detailing stuff and very year I have to empty out the top half where I keep all my waxes and polilshes, and box up all that stufff and haul it all into the house to keep them from freeziing. It's a sizeable chore what with finding boxes and a place in the house to store stuff but I can't have those 5 gallon containers of Poorboys stuff freezing up! :D

Yesterday I'm in the garage looking for an extension cord and I ran across one of those magnetic engine block heaters laying unused in a drawer. The idea struck me that this might be capable of heating my wax cabinet.

I found a piece of steel about 8" square to attach the magnet to and which would heat up and raditate more heat into the cabinet, plugged the heater in and put it on the middle shelf of the cabinet.

This morning it was 0 degrees outside, 18 degrees in the garage and 44 degrees in the top half of the cabinet where I keep all the waxes/polishes.

It appears that the old unused block heater will be an inexpensive (get one new for about $30) and, most importantly, be a safe way to heat all my waxes and polishes. Now I'm a happy detailer with all my waxes and polishes safe and close by for when I want to crank up the kerosene heater and wax the truck..... again!!

:yay

Very intersting idea Jim and welcome back...we haven't seen you around in quite a long time :howdy :howdy :howdy

HEY!! Figured you'd be viewing all new posts daily and see me coming out from a lurk. I"ve been focusing on the performance stuff for the last few months and I can't do two forums daily.... too many posts to view in the limited time I have so I've been going to performancetrucks.net to learn how to program the puter etc.

Got the supercharger put on in August, then did a trans build.... shift kit, Corvette servo's etc, then 4.56 gears with a Detroit Locker Trutrack posi, now am doing a 3k stall to be followed shortly by a cam, heads, meth injection. Taking a college course in head porting/polishing and then next summer a course on engine building a then will swap the 5.3 for a 402 to put under the supercharger. Also have some body work on tqap for this winter which might include putting a coat of pearl over the white.

This ole fart is having funj... wantin to get this big ole 6000lb ecsb Chevy truck down the track in less than 12 sec.
  :w00t: :nutkick

Hope all is well with you this Christmas. Family ok and business is good I hope. Take care Steve. See ya. Jim

Joe..there are a couple pictures of his truck in my gallery section on my site..
white modded truck and also his current engine compartment..not sure which page..

page one shows a hood shot from a white and another pic to the right, if indeed this is the one.

steve hate to bother you but you have a pic of a lime green car it's fixed up super nice and a favorite of mine . is the owner a member of dc.anyways thought i would let you know.

Pool hasn't been a priority for a while. I'll get back into it one day.

I don't have any up to date pics posted in my gallery but there are some about a year old at www.msnusers.com/jimsdogtruckphotos

I'll try to figure out how to get the new photos from the hard drive to the gallery. I don't know squat about puters.

Steve: I'm pretty used to being together with the young guys... they're the ones getting the DUI's and consequently coming to me for evaluations and classes so taking engine building and head porting classes with them will be fun. Once they find out that we're all "guys" we get along good and the age difference pretty much goes away. I say "pretty much" because I listen to jazz and don't want anything to do with the extreme bass that is often associated with rap etc.

All the years of playing drums and then in the 60's/70's listening to music behind acid with headphones cranked up has damaged my hearing. The dudes wit the strong bass speakers are going to pay a big price down the road. Stop & think about it. Speakers give out after a few years of heavy use because they are vibrated toooo much and speakers operate the same way as ears... the sound is transmitted via vibrations and the vibrator wears out... in speakers and ears.

My mom passed this year and my wife and I are buying her house. I't 3 blocks from our house. We'll rent out the two apartments and I'll have the 26 by 40 ft shop in back of the garage. It's insulated and ready for a furnace. YES!! Wish I was younger and had more years to play!! Rock on Bud!

yes those are pictures of Jim's truck ...you should see the rest of them:D

the green skylark is not a member of DC ...it was taken by a detailer from Texas

That heater may up your electric bill a lot, some those are 1000W+.

Is your truck a 4x4? IMO you will need to put that pig on a diet or run some drugs to get that 402 into the 12s.

Thanks for taking the time to post some pics i bet it is a very expensive hobby, this is the same truck on PB's site pg 1. what a coincidence you bring up the hearing loss issue. first off let me say that i'm sorry this has happend with you my dad has a hearing loss problem his is from many years of working construction and being around heavy equipment. channel 7 news ran a segment this evening about hearing loss. They say that the new mp 3 players are gonna contribute more hearing problems in this generation of teens then ever before and parents need to be concerned at what volumes their kids listen to music. The truck is awsome & thanks for the pics. now get to your room you have school in the morning  :stick :stuart: .

Good idea! Aslo make sure the cabinet is sealed good and maybe line the walls with some foam insulation for more and more efficient heat. :)

. . . and maybe keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Sounds like a potential fire hazard to me. Big wood cabinet . . . open heating source . . . bad combination if you ask me.
