Dunno if anyone else here uses laundry detergent on their carpets, but I mixed myself a bucket, using some OxiClean stuff that my wife uses in the laundry.
Results were pretty good - but I don't know what the long term effects would be, so I figured I'd ask around and see if anyone else is using this combination (or something close).
This is my wife's car (well, was my wife's - with the baby, she gets the good car, I get the clunker) - a poorly cared for 94 Honda Accord. The carpets were in *hideous* condition, so I went for broke and used Tide.
Method - I vacuumed really well, using my shop vac, and started to use a spray bottle (generously) and a brush to apply the mixture to the carpets. With a decent amount of effort, I got the carpets pretty clean, and the smell of the car is great! Occasionally, there was a stain that the stuff couldn't get out - since I was fresh out of dry cleaning solvent, I went for broke and used some EFHI - sparingly, concentrating it only on the spot. I then used the handle of the brush to push as much of the solution to one side, and vacuumed it up. I sprayed some water, rubbed again, and vacuumed again. Then, finally, I blotted as much of the water out of the carpet with a towel.
The results were pretty good - car smells great, and the carpets are a thousand times cleaner than when I started. My question - should I expect my carpets to start unraveling any time soon?
