Spring cleaning ???????? by KC

Dunno if anyone else here uses laundry detergent on their carpets, but I mixed myself a bucket, using some OxiClean stuff that my wife uses in the laundry.

Results were pretty good - but I don't know what the long term effects would be, so I figured I'd ask around and see if anyone else is using this combination (or something close).

This is my wife's car (well, was my wife's - with the baby, she gets the good car, I get the clunker) - a poorly cared for 94 Honda Accord. The carpets were in *hideous* condition, so I went for broke and used Tide.

Method - I vacuumed really well, using my shop vac, and started to use a spray bottle (generously) and a brush to apply the mixture to the carpets. With a decent amount of effort, I got the carpets pretty clean, and the smell of the car is great! Occasionally, there was a stain that the stuff couldn't get out - since I was fresh out of dry cleaning solvent, I went for broke and used some EFHI - sparingly, concentrating it only on the spot. I then used the handle of the brush to push as much of the solution to one side, and vacuumed it up. I sprayed some water, rubbed again, and vacuumed again. Then, finally, I blotted as much of the water out of the carpet with a towel.

The results were pretty good - car smells great, and the carpets are a thousand times cleaner than when I started. My question - should I expect my carpets to start unraveling any time soon? :)

I found Oxiclean and detergent whitens socks noticeably. I have been using it on my socks for a while now and they have not fallen apart yet. You should be okay. A guy told me someone used it on the carpet in their home and it really got the oil and dirt out of the carpet in front of the door from the previous owner.

I really like it. Haven't used in on my cars yet, but it takes stains out of cloth furniture great. A friend of mine spilled red wine on my white cloth arm chair. Oxiclean took it right out, not stain left at all.

How are you guys using the OxiClean? Are you spraying it or just saturating the area?

Curious, because I saw some at the hardware store and would like to try it on our carpets. Just looking for some tips.

Thanks in advance!

I have used Oxi-Clean on my house carpets to clean up some of the messes that my dogs have made. I have had no problems at all with the carpets and it did a pretty good job..:up

I came across a review of Prestone's Interior Cleaner, and was going to pick myself up some, when I decided to just stick with some Tide and Oxiclean mixed together.

Went home, and in a large (~5 gallons?) bucket, mixed together a measuring cup of Tide, and a scoop of Oxiclean (as my wife uses it in the laundry). Didn't want to glop water all over the carpets, so I kept refilling a spray bottle, saturating the carpet (but not soaking it) and brushing it. Once I had sufficiently brushed it, I vacuumed it and let it air out.

On the mats, I used a more concentrated solution - a spray bottle, with half a measuring cup of tide, and a capful of Oxiclean. It wouldn't get out the tougher stains (which, I went haywire on, and decided to use EFHI, which worked really well - but I wouldn't get that harsh with too much carpet). It did work fairly well on mild-medium stains, and worked great as far as cleaning the carpet.

Considering the cost of all this (wife picks up Oxiclean for ~$10 at Costco) - this was one very useful combination. My question was am I doing something harmful to the carpets - because if not - this is going to join my detailing regimen.

BTW: smell - the next day, it's still pretty damn good. I used Leatherique the day before, and the combination of the Tide and the Leatherique makes the car smell half-new car, half-laundry (which is better than it sounds, now that I write it out..)

So is Tide. Don't worry about hurting your carpet or anything.

When I got rid of the red wine stain on the chair I just mixed up about 1/4 cup Oxiclean in about 16oz of hot water and sprayed it on the area until it was saturated. I blotted off the excess with a clean towel. That was it.

Just a couple easy hints for cleaning carpeted mats:

1) clean them at a spray car wash-once you scrub them down well with whatever carpet cleaner you are using, rinse them out with the high pressure hose until the water runs clean, squeegee out as much water as you can, then take them home and put them in the dryer.

2) go to your local laundry mat and wash them in the big industial washers (the side loaders without the agitator), then dry them in the dryer.

In both instances, the mats will be very clean and well rinsed (no soap residue), and the dryer will fluff up the carpet fibers and make them look new again.

Scott-

Thanks for the tips - actually, I did some of that - but didn't think of using the pressure washer that someone got me for Christmas... Next time around, it's a go!

So this oxiclean is for real. I thought for sure watching the commercials that it was a big scam. I'll have to see if its available in Canada.

Buldog-

I'm with you - when I first saw it, I thought 'oh, no - she was taken again'... but when I saw the results in the laundry, they were pretty good, so I figured it wasn't a bad buy. The work on the carpets was pretty good - although I can't tell how much was the Tide, and how much was the Oxiclean.

we have useing the pressure washer to clean floor mats for years now. works better than any extractor ever thought about. we useally just spray them down with all purpose let them sit for a few then blast away. work side to side you can see the color of the water change from dark to clear to let you know when to move down the mat. iv never seen a better way or easier way to clean a floor mat.

Spring cleaning time ? upon arrival of my buddy ride, he explained that he has been sending this 2 years ride to be detail every time when there is a festive season ?( once yearly????)...but is it necessarily for the car paint to be polish & corrected every time - will our clear coat 2 mil of an micron last with stand against these harshness ???? wrong hands

I questions why there is the need of paint correction every year ?
He reply ? I thought it is necessarily, just like spring cleaning !!!!!! I say ?What?!!!!!

just a quick wash aka wipe with ONR - most owners or detailer would like an instant gratifications - so harsh chemicals or acids use to create this transformations but after a prolong time - our wheels clear coat begin to chips & peels
what we need is just a quick effective wash to remove these dust
if u do have some tar stains - try claying them

as for me i usually use the balance ONR solution with a separate MF to wash these contaminated ares

Great work once again KC.

Your continued efforts to educate the Asian Rim on proper detailing techniques is an inspiration!!

What a great turn around. I do have a question, you say that you ONR was used as lube during polishing? Do you spray the panel once the product breaks down and then continue to polish? Thanks
