All About The Bling Bling
After reading many threads about clay brands i thought i would write this.

In the world of detailing there are so many companies selling clay. Some sell to the public/retail only. Some sell off the back of a truck/wholesale only. But in one way they are all the same, They all prep your paint surface for buffing/polishing.

Everyone should know that autowax company inc. also known as AutoMagic was one of the original clay manufacturers. With 6 patents relating to clay. the name claymagic is by far the most recognized in the detailing business.

Others try to compete by making their own clay but to only be shut down by the court system.

With all this talk going on about everyone being loyal to a particular brand.
I say this, Do you relize that automagic/claymagic sells private label clay to many of the detail industry’s leading companies.

So next time you pick up your favorite detailing clay, Relize that you just might be using claymagic under a different name.

:headbang :jump :badabum

Please mods if this is in the wrong area let me know do not delete it. I don't want to try a write it over again. thank you :bigups

oh wow! and this whole time i thouhgt the color was what distiguished it.

to be honest i think we've all heard this before. but isnt automagics clay just bought off the majoy producers (ive heard there r only 2-3) and then just sell it under different name? sounds to me like automagic is just a middle man.

Do i sense a bit of sarcasm? Truely sorry if this has been said before. I just thought it was funny that i hear about all these different clay brands.

And do you have any info about what your saying that automagic is only a middle man? I've never heard of this before and would love to learn something new.

i didnt mean it with bad intentions. im sorry. as for automagic being the middleman. thats not a fact. i just say it because this topic has been brought up prior and i rememebr reading about clay only being manufactured by 2-3 companys.

automagic seems to be a bulk supplier so it might just be that they make their own clay.

There are two types of clay...Plastic and Elastic. Clay Magic is Elastic and Optimum/Poorboy's is Plastic (to name a couple).

I find it hilarious how people jump on brand bandwagon's when in fact, the only thing distinguishing is color.

Sean,
Could you please elaborate on the differences between "elastic" & "plastic" clay?
Thanks,
Norah

Hi Norah, I am not Sean but I hope to answer the question.

First the AutoMagic clay is a thermal plastic, not elastic. The plastic clays are rather ridgid and crumble when pulled apart. Clays like Optimum's clay are poly-butene and these types of clay resemble a rubber eraser. They are elastic and do not crumble when pulled but rather stretch, they are very pliable. The plastic clays will leave residue on moldings and protruding areas but the poly-elastic clays wil usually not leave any residue behind.

Both clays use synthetic detergents and abrasives so in that sense they are the same. Sadly AutoWax is now going around suing everyone because of "patent infringment" but because many other clays are not plastic but made of polybutene I would think that they should be excluded. We'll see what happpens.

I thought this was common knownledge among those who spend a lot of time on boards, as well as other enthuisiasts. But it's a good thing to point out.

The situation is similar to MF manufacturers. Maybe even fewer of them for clay. Certain companies may have slightly different formulations however, but generally they seem to be the same.

I want to add to this thread that it is also a joke to buy "clay lubrication". They are more or less selling you soapy water in a bottle. When I clay my cars I use nothing more than running water out of the hose over the area I am claying and it works very, very well. Save yourself some cash and use water instead.

Cheers!

hehe, see you learn something new every day. Well maybe not every day but certainly for me, today. I didn't know there were so few manufacturers or about automagic. It makes sense now though as over the years I've used half a dozen or so brands and only difference to me was the price. So much for my theory that the same clay is used for something else (cheap) and I just had to find it. Damn shame that floral clay I tried last year didn't work. At $1 or $2 a lb it would have been a major savings. Then there was playdough, several modeling clays, polyclay....there is an eraser clay I haven't tried yet though hrmmmmm :lol

I beg to differ. I was detailing a black car under some pretty awesome halogens when I busted out with the blue Clay Magic fine grade bar. When using just clear water for a lubricant, the clay marred the paint. When I started using Wolfgang Clay Lubricant, the clay no longer marred the paint. I spritzed the paint with alcohol afterwards to make sure that the lube wasn't covering up any marring. It wasn't covering anything up, it was preventing the marring from even happening.

If you want to see what a lousy lubricant pure water is, try running it in your engine instead of oil and see what happens. :naughty When using a mild abrasive such as clay, I highly suggest using a designated lubricant. Take it from Tyrell Fuzzard, I want you to have the best detailing experience and get the best results that you can possibly get.

The Auto Wax Company, Inc. aka Auto Magic owns the patents to detailing clay. KEL, the company that makes the Erazer brand "elastic: clay who also private labeled clay for numerous other companies has been court ordered to cease production and sales of his version of detailing clay. He was found guilty of patent infringement.

The lube that comes in the kit with Mothers clay is not just soap and water but is a good quick detail spray. It's called Mothers California Gold Showtime Instant Detailer (who comes up with these names that no one can remember?) and it's one of my favorite detailers so I don't use it to clay, I use car wash soap and water.

I use soap and water. I've used free flowing water (never spray bottle though with plain h20) before too. I like the soap and water mix better. I don't use normal clay lubes because of the cost. I don't know how much you guys use a car but I tend to use 16-32oz.

Oh SNAP! I love the Erazer elastic yellow bar alot! That kills. I might have to stock alot more seeing how I don't like the gritty bars at all.

For lubricant I just use QEW mixed in in random proportions and it works great!

Soap and water is far cheaper than buying the lubricant supplied. Just buy a $1-2 big sprayer bottle and add a few drops of a highly concentrated wash (I like PB SS&S), and the rest water. In the end, you've saved a bunch of money.

Anybody know anything about soft99 clay which is made in Japan(if I'm not mistaken)? It's priced around USD 7 for a bar...(not sure about the actual size ). Maybe someone can bring them in as an alternative .
